Hurst presiding at the organ . Lodge vvas opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting vvere read and confirmed , when Bro . W . T . Salzmann was raised to the Degree of
M . M . The installation ceremony vvas performed by the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , vvho very ably inducted Bro . W . I . Mason into the chair of K . S ., the Board of Installed Masters numbering 25 , vvith Bro . Clarke acting as D . C , and Bros . G . H . Grimwood , P . P . G . S ., and C Emmerson , P . P . G . D . C , occupying the Wardens' chairs . Bro . Mason vvas most enthusiastically greeted and congratulated , and ,
after the usual preliminaries , appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . C . Joslin , S . VV . ; C . Lord , J . W . ; the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C . England , D . P . G . M . Sholl , Tyler . There vvere three candidates for initiation , viz ., the Rev . David Hughes , B . A ., Harris Hills , Esq ., and the Rev . William Edmund Dixon . These gentlemen having been approved of were respectively introduced into Freemasonry by the W . M ., the I . P . M ., and the Deputy Grand Master , who terminated the full ceremony of the initiation of his curate by delivering the charge to the nevvlv
admitted brethren . He then completed the duty of Installing Master by addressing the VV . M ., officers , and brethren in the customary manner . The performance of the ceremonies in most careful style , vvith excellentjmusical accompaniment and reverential attention to the sublime ritual , made a deep impression alike on the newly initiated members as on all others vvho had the gratification of hearing and witnessing
the proceedings . The claim for the poor and distressed " was made in open lodge , and vvas liberally answered by all vvho at that "moment" vvere in a position to practise Charity . Sundry propositions in relation to lodge matters having been disposed of , the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to banquet . Bro . Joseph George , one of the Stewards of the lodge , provided and superintended the banquet at his hotel , the
well-known Rose and Crown , and vve mustsay that a better managed entertainment we have but seldom , if at all , met with . The spacious ball-room in vvhich it was held vvas profusely and artistically decorated vvith choice plants and flowers in various devices , amongst vvhich vvas prominent an inscription of the name of the lodge in variegated leaves , and the general effect of the wall and table adornments was extremely good , and merited the loudly expressed satisfaction of the company . As well in respect of

surrounding accessories as in the quantity and quality of viands and wines and the general service , the guests of the Stour Valley Lodge could not but admit the unqualified success of its Steward ' s arrangements , under the direction of its principal ofiicers . The proceedings after banquet were extended long beyond the usual time occupied by speeches and song , but
vvere evidently so thoroughly enjoyed , that up to the last a vacant seat at table vvas not discernible . The usual loyal toasts were briefly given by Bro . Mason , VV . M ., whose reference to the unswerving loyalty of the Craft to the Throne , and the devotion of the M . W . G . M . to the welfare of the people generally , met with cordial acceptation . The W . M . also made a touching allusion to
the regretted illness of Bro . the Crown Prince of Prussia , and expressed his assurance that all Masons , wherever dispersed , prayed earnestly for his recovery . The remaining toasts were entrusted to several brethren of the Iodge , and we observed that , in consequence thereof , there vvas a greater animation and a pleasing variety throughout the proceedings , which made a really long evening , as far as hours go , pass much more agreeably
than is generally the case at Masonic banquets . In accordance vvith the W . M . ' s excellent arrangements , Bro . J . F . Hills , P . P . J . G . W ., proposed "The Health of the Pro G . M ., the Dep . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " whose efforts on behalf of the Order he eulogised , and , referring to members of that body then present , gave a hearty welcome to Bros . Martyn , Binckes , Terry , and Clarke .
Bro . Clarke returned thanks , remarking that this year would not be readily forgotten in Masonic circles , from the fact that so many illustrious Masons had been admitted to the roll of highest Masonic honour in celebration of the Jubilee of our Most Gracious Patroness of the Order .
Bro , joslin , S . W ., proposed "The R . W . Prov . G . M . of Suffolk , the Right Hon . Lord Henniker , P . S . G . W . ; the V . W . D . P . G . M ., the Rev . C . J . Martyn , P . G . C ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " to which Bro . Martyn responded , saying that the toast was a most comprehensive one , in connection with which , personally , he might observe " the least said the soonest
mended . " He could not be otherwise than grateful for all the encouragement he had received from the Stour Valley Lodge , vvhich , of all others , knew how much he loved Freemasonry . He hoped to be spared to continue his efforts for a long time to come . The Prov . Grand Officers vvere excellent and efficient men , and there vvas a very good sample amongst the members ot the Stour Valley . It was
pleasant to know that the ranks of Prov . Grand Officers had been increased and strengthened by the enrolment of Bro . Body amongst them as one of the recipients of Jubilee honours . That brother had greatly laboured for the good and welfare of Masonic Charities , and fully deserved the honour vvhich had been conferred on him . Un behalf of all named , he thanked the brethren for their acknowledgment
of the toast . The I . P . M ., Bro . Pratt , next proposed "The Health of the VV . M ., Bro . VV . Inglis Mason , " of whom he said it vvas difficult to speak in terms of sufficient commendation for all he had done for the lodge since his initiation . Though " made" a Mason but five years ago , as shown by the lodge register , there was another register at no
great distance vvhich recorded that he vvas " born" a Mason some 40 years since , and , whether before or subsequent to his connection vvith the Stour Valley Lodge , his record as a thorough good Mason by name and nature alike vvas established . What better evidence of his popularity vvas needed than that of his present surroundings ? Ihe regard of his numerous friends testified to the quality
of his principles , whilst his work in the lodge made manifest the quality and perfection of his ritual . That his year of office would add considerably to the welfare of the lodge and redound highly to his credit there could be no doubt . He vvas skilful , just , and generous , and would add a lustre to all Masonic undertakings within his province . Bro . Spratt's excellent and evidently heartfelt remarks vvere received
with much enthusiasm , again and again renewed when the W . M . rose to respond . After waiting some time for a hearing , Bro . Mason modestly deprecated what he was pleased to term the overpraise of his good friend and Bro . Pratt , stating , however , that it had been his great wish to become the W . M . of the Stour Valley Lodge in order that vvhat he might be able to
do in promoting its welfare , prosperity , and progress , he should have the opportunity to carry into effect . His year of office should speak for itself when the proper time came . His best should be done , and he trusted that best would be good for the Iodge and all concerned , and give satisfaction . The VV . M ; spoke briefly but very earnestly , and vvas warmly cheered on resuming his seat .
The Health of the Installing Master , " as a separate toast , vvas responded to by Bro . Martyn , who seemed to be in the happiest vein and full of humour . Referring to the song vvhich just preceded his response , " Bid me discourse , " he said he should not take the hint it appeared to offer , as he thought he had already discoursed sufficiently as well in as after the lodge , and to be called upon to return thanks
twice in one evening vvas a "strong order" vvhich he would prefer reduced to a single " line . " He could but reiterate " I thank you \ " But he had now the opportunity to speak of another good brother , and to give honour to a man to whom honour is justly due . Everything under his rule had gone smoothly and successfully , and , spite of all the good qualities his successor undoubtedly possessed , he
( the present VV . M . ) would have something to do to break the record . To perform thoroughly the duties of a W . M . was not at all times an easy task , but Bro . Pratt went into the work heart and soul , and all knew how during his year of office he had stuck to it . Deeds more than words had characterised his labours , and novv let deeds , more than words , reward him . He ( Bro . Martyn )
was for the moment the mouth-piece of the members of the lodge , their deputy in another sense than that usually appertaining to him , and as such he novv offered to Bro . Pratt a small token of sincere regard , and an earnest of the sincerity of their appreciation of all his efforts , and their thankful acknowledgment thereof . The spontaneous gift of the brethren which he novv asked Bro . Pratt
to accept would doubtless be valued by him ten thousand times more when he reflected upon the worth which "had merited it , and he felt sure that there was not one present who did not pray T . G . A . O . T . U . to spare him many years to wear it . The D . P . G . M . here attached a handsome and massive gold P . M . ' s jewel to Bro . Pratt's breast , and , re " ferring to his own P . M . ' s jewel of many years ago , and the
