Analysis Of Returns.
Stewards was 29 , who represented amongst them the Provincial Grand Lodge , Provincial Grand Chapter , the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge , Rose Croix Chapter , No . 112 , and pretty well the whole array of private lodges in the Province . On previous occasions , when it has made a special effort , it has almost invariably done so through the medium of one or two Stewards , but on this occasion it has evinced its loyally to its chief to the extent we have stated , and
in doing so , has won golden opinions frcm all who admire and support our Boys ' Schcol . The total sum raised by its 2 y Provincial ai . d lodge representatives , among whom , by the way , were two ladies Unattached , was £ 1260 . In this was included a donation of 500 guineas from the Prov . Grand Lodge ; 50 guineas from Prov . Grand Chapter ; and I 52 103 . from the Chairman , while conspicuous among the contributions from other sources was . C 74 lis . from our respected liro . G . Dalrymple , Prov . G . Secretary .
Though the Duke of Devonshire , Prov . G . Master of DERBYSHIRE , presided at the Boys' School Festival of last year , the lodges and brethren have not allowed the great effort they then made to worthily support his Grace ' s Chairmanship to prevent them giving theft usual support to the Institutions during the present year . Thus , in February , one of its 27 lodges contributed £ 30 8 s . 6 d . to the Benevolent Institution , while in May , the representatives of half a dozen ledges raised £ 372 7 s . On Wednesday , Stewards from three lodges , with a lady ,
Unattached , contributed a further total of £ 110 5 s ., raising the amount distributed during the year 1 S 97 to £ 513 os . 6 d . Last year , as we have said , the Prov . G . Master presided at the Festival of this Institution , and vvas backed up to the extent of £ 1642 2 s ., while in 1895 the Province raised £ 550 6 s ., of which the Old People received £ 297 5 s ., this Institution , £ 184 16 s ., and the Girls' School the small remainder . In 1894 , the total was £ 647 15 s . 6 d ., of which this Institution received £ 600 10 s 6 d ., and the Girls' School , £ 47 5 s . In 1893 , the Returns totalled up £ 1025 8 s . 6 d ., and in 1892 , £ 1738 14 s ., of which £ 1362 was in respect of the Benovelent Jubilee .
DEVONSHIRE has latterly been showing far greater activity in behalf of our Charities , and has taken part in all the Festivals of this year , the sum raised for the Benevolent Institution in February , including Bro . Westlake's list of £ 70 75 ., reaching £ 130 4 s . ; in May £ 35 ios . was raised for the Girls' School , and on Wednesday £ 82 Ss . < 5 d . for the Boys' School , Bro . Westlake being a Steward at each of
the three Festivals , while the total stands at £ 248 2 s . 6 d . In 18 9 6 , £ 190 ios . was raised for the Schools ; in 18 95 £ 226 163 . ; in 18 94 £ 135 12 s . ; and in 1893 £ 181 2 s . were distributed among the three Institutions ; while in 18 92 , including . £ 807 iSs . 6 d . subscribed to the Benevolent Jubilee , the total was £ 923 8 s . 6 d . It must also be borne in mind that the Province has its own Educational and Annuity Funds , which very properly claim the first attention of our Devon brethren .
DORSETSHIRE has completed the year ' s series of Festivals amid quite a grand flourish of trumpets . In February it raised £ 137 us . for the Benevolent Institution ; in May £ 72 gs . for the Girls' School ; and on Wednesday , by the hands of Bro . C . J . Freeman , J . P ., representing the Prov . G . Lodge and its 14 lodges generally , as well as Lodge and Chapter No . 1037 , Portland , in particular , and Mrs . Freeman , £ 375 . This gives a total for the year of £ 585 , which is greater
than the sum raised in the year ( 1 S 92 ) of the Benevolent Jubilee , whirh amounted to £ 521 6 s . In 1 S 93 there was apportioned between the Schools £ 233 . In 1894 the . Benevolent and Girls' School together received £ 192 ion . ; in 18 95 the sum apportioned between the same two Institutions was £ 351 is ., of which £ 105 was subscribed to the Old People and £ 24 6 is . to " Our Girls . " In 18 9 6 the Province favoured the same Charilies , giving £ 160 ios . to the former and £ 12 12 s . to the latter . The greater contribution to this Institution is justified by the time it has been left unassisted .
Two of the 38 lodges in ESSEX sent up Stewards on Wednesday , the sum of their lists amounting to £ 57 15 s ., being augmented by the contributions of three Unattached brethren and a lady , malting the total £ 115 ios . In February seven Jolges amongst them raised £ 414 19 s . 6 d ., and in May the amount was £ 303 95 ., comprising lists from three lodges , a chapter , and three Unattached Stewards . Thus the total for 1897 is
£ 833 iSs . 6 d . In 18 9 6 it reached the higher figure of £ 1433 us . 6 d ., of which the Girls' School received £ 950 ; in 1895 it amounted to £ 1272 ios ., of which rather more than one half fell to the lot of this Institution , while in 1 S 94 it stood at £ 1123 . In the two preceding years Essex greatly distinguished itself—thc total for 1893 , including £ 2155 6 i . 6 d . in support of the Prov . Grand Master ' s Chairmanship at the Boys' Festival , being £ 2258 3 s . 6 d ., while ir . iSg 2 it amounted to £ 2608 5 s ., ot which £ 2318 2 s . 6 d . was in respect of the Benevolent Jubilee . We heartily congratulate this Province on such an honourable record .
GLOUCESTERSHIRE had quite an array of representatives , Bro . R . P . Sumner doing duty for the Province as a whole , while there were four of its 16 lodges represented each by a Steward , two Unattached brethren , and two ladies , the total from all sources De , ' ng £ 304 'os ., which , with the £ 84 ios . subscribed to the Benevolent Institution in February and the £ 286 iSs . raised in May for the Girls' School , places the year ' s aggregate at £ 675 iSs . In 18 96 £ 544 195 . was apportioned
not unequally among the three Institutions , and in 1892 it reached £ 598 igs ., of which this Institution secured considerably more than one-half and the Old People only £ 44 us . In 18 94 and 1 S 93 the figures were in a smaller scale , the sum of £ 428 6 s . 6 d . being raised in the former and £ 304 183 . in the latter , but in 1 S 92 it stood as high as £ 1729 ns ., the Prov . G . Master , the Right Hon . Sir M . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., being Chairman at the Festival of this Institution and his Province supporting him very handsomely to the extent of £ 1645 ns .
For reasons which it is no business of ours to inquire into , the strong Pro vince of
HAMPSUIRI ; AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT , with its roll of 48 lodges , has made but an indifferent show this year . In February a single lodge gave £ 57 15 s . to the Old People , and in May the Returns sent in b y the Stewards of four lodges reached £ 153 6 s . 6 d . On Wednesday Bro . John W . Gieve , J . P ., Prov . G . Treasurer , took the Province as a whole under his charge , and raised £ 21 , while the representatives of live lodges and Bros . R . Eve and J . H . Le Feuvre , Unattached , raised the amount from the whole body to £ 212 15 s . the year ' s aggregate being £ 423 16 s . 6 d . This is a

In 18 95 the year yielded £ 846 Ss . 6 d ., of which the Boys ' School had the satisfaction of receiving £ 516 83 . ; in 18 94 it was £ 95 1 gs . 6 d . ; and in 18 93 , £ 680 . js . ; but in 1892 , when the Benevolent Institution celebrated its Jubilee it amounted to £ 1650 17 s ., of which the Jubilee claimed £ 1345 lys . 7 d . We have not forgotten that the Province his its own Educational Fund , which rightly obtains a generous amount of support from the lodges and brethren .

present year . In February it sent up 15 Stewards who represented amongst , them 10 lodges and three chapters , and had the satisfaction of compiling a total of £ 857 4 s - 6 d ., while in May nine lodges took part in the proceedings and together raised £ 399 7 s . On Wednesday only thrce lodges represented by as many Stewards and three Unattached Stewards vvere entered , the total of their lists being £ 174 15 s . 6 d ., that of Bro . C . E . Keyser , of the Bushey Hall Lodjre , No .. 2323 , amounting to £ 6 7 4 s . ; the proceeds for the whole yrar reaching £ 143 1 7 s . among the Institutions , the Old People receiving £ 744 8 * . 6 d . ; the Girls' School , i-2 gs 3 s . ; and this Institution , £ 49 8 153 . In 18 95 the Benevolent obtained the largest share of support , while the Schools were favoured about equally , the total subscribed to the three being £ 1120 gs . 6 d . In 18 94 the sum of £ 958 6 s . 4 d . was raised , while in 1 S 93 , when Bro . Keyser presided as Chairman at the ' Benevolent Festival , and in 1 S 92 , when the Benevolent Jubilee was held , the Returns were on quite a grand scale , amounting in the first-mentioned year to £ 2106 14 s , and in the latter to £ 2135 6 s . 6 d .
hi : \* T , vvith its 62 lodges , has been pretty much in the same position as Hampshire and the Isle of Wight ; that is to say , it has bacn doing far less thin usutl . La * t year , for instance , it raised only £ 798 19 * ., of which this Institution was able to secure £ 438 8 s . 6 d , In February of the present year it raised £ 212 3 * . for the Old People , and in May £ 219 195 . for the Girls' School . However , on Wednesday six lodges sent up Stewards , who put their shoulders to the Wheal and
amongst them raised £ 419 in ., which , with the Returns at the previous Festivals , places the aggregate for 1897 at £ 852 2 s . In 1 S 95 the Returns , including £ 1260 for the Eastes Perpetual Presentation to the Bjys' School , reached £ 2390 gs . 6 d . ; in 1 S 94 , £ 1225 ios . 6 d . ¦ in 1 S 93 . £ 2103 123 . 6 d . ; in 1 S 92 , the Benevolent Jubilee year , £ 3003 13 s . 6 d . ; and in 1 S 91 , when E id Amherst , Prov . G . Master , presided at the Benevolent Festival , £ JOIS 53 . We hope to see Kent figuring prominently next year , when the Centenary of this Institution will be held ..
Only two out of the 100 and more lodges in EAST LANCASHIRE were represented at Wednesday ' s gathering , there being also two brethren and a lady as Unattached Stewards . The total was £ 60 iS ; ., which , added to the £ 4 6 4 6 s . raised for the Old People in February , and the £ 250 15 * . contributed to the Girls' School in May , makes the year ' s total £ 775 19-5 . Last year the donations and subscriptions at the three Festivals amounted to £ 912 gi .-
but in 18 95 to no more than £ 265 15 s ., this excessive smallness being accounted for by the successful Festival held in behalf of its own Educational and Benevolent Institution , when upwards of £ 4 . 000 was raised for the local Charity . In 18 94 the sum distributed amongst the Central . Institutions was £ 772 73 . 4 d ., and in 1893 , £ 389 18 s . ; but in 1892 , when the Be * i ' evole .. t Jubilee was held , East Lancashire did some excellent work , and raised during the year £ 2824 15 s ., while in 1891 it raised a fraction over £ 1278 .
WEST LANCASHIRE appears to have put fort ' i more of its strength than at the Benevolent and Girls ' School Festivals . At the former the sum subscribed was only £ 52 IOL , while at the latter it was £ 224 14 s . On Wednesday Bro . T . Banner Newton , Prov . G . Treasurer , acted as representative of the whole Province , while seven of the 115 lodges sent Stewards of their own , and there were two Stewards , of whom one was a lady Unattached . The Returns from these amounted to £ 209 8 s .
and raised the totil for 1 * 897 to £ 486 12 s . In 18 96 , the amount , including £ 448 5 s . to this Sc . 00 ! , was £ 530 13 s . 6 j ., while in 18 95 it was £ 516 15 s . 61 , but in 1894 , when the Earl of Lathom took upon hiuwelt the Churnunship at the Girls' School Festival and the Province subscribed £ 2500 , it amounted to £ 2768 2 s . 6 d . In 1 S 92 , the year of the Benevolent Jubilee , the total was £ 16 74 14 s . 6 d ., and in 1891 , when Lord Lathom presided at the Boys' Festival at Brighton , the year's total , including £ 6126 14 s . 6 j . subscribed to this Institution was £ 6341 19 s . 6 d . '
Though LINCOLNSHIRE played the leading part at the Girls' School Festival last year , when the Earl of Yarbo ough , Prov . G . M ., occupied the chair , and the Province supported his lordship to the extent of £ 1500 , it has not been wholly unrepresented at this year s
anniversary celebrations , one of its 24 lodges hiving been entered in the Benevolcnt Returns in February for £ 10 103 ., and another ' boing included for ai equal sum on Wednesday . At the Benevolent Jubilee , in 1892 , it raisei £ 65 o 5-1 . ; at the Boys' Festival , in 1891 , £ 418 its . 2 d . ; and at tha Girls' Centenary , in * i 3 S 8 £ 202 2 s . 6 d . '
Notwithstanding that MIDDLESEX made such strenuous and successful efforts last year in support of its Prov . G . Master ' s Chairmanship at the Benevolent Festival , it has done somo very goad work during the present year . Thus in February it contributed £ 352 lis . to the Old People , the number of Stewards being 11 and of the represented lodges seven . In May six lodges figured in the Returns as together raising £ 260 8 s .
wiiile on vveonesday the number ot btewards , including a brother and two ladies Unattached , was 12 , the number of lodges represented being sevan ani one Royal Arch Chapter , the total raised by these being £ 492 19 s ., the principal list being that of Bro . R . J . Ball , W . M . of the Staines Lodge , No . 2536 , for £ 110 5 s . ; the year ' s totil amounting to £ 1105 iSs . Last year it reached £ 395 7 15 V . 6 d . 01 wnicn to
£ 3705 15 s . ua . was suoscnoea the benevolent Institution ; in 1895 it was slightly under £ 500 , the precise amount being £ 4 g 3 Si . ; but ' in 1891 it was £ 1043 17 s . 6 d . ; in 1893 , £ 630 1 S 3 . ; and in 18 93 , including £ 1315 93 . in respect ot the Benevolent Jubilee , it stood at £ 1619 153 . 6 d . Such a series of contributions , though varying in amount from year to year , is an honour to thc Province , even though it has a muster roll of 42 lodges .
Passing to the Province of NORTHANTS AND HUNTS , which has done such excellent work under its present Prov . G . Master the Earl of Euston , we lind it was strongly represented , there being in all ei ght Stewards of whom Bros . Harry Manfield and George Elland acted for the Province generally , and bodge and Chapter No . 3 60 , particularly , thc list of the latter amounting to no less than £ 33 . 7 s . Bro . E . Last year the contribution amounted to £ 183 15 s . ; in 1 S 95 . 1 ° £ ' 05 ; in 1 S 94 , to £ 328 7 s . ; and in iSyj . when the Earl of Eusto ' n ' was Chairman at thc Girls' Festival , to i . 1107 12 s . This is an admirable series of Returns for a Province which only numbers . 5 lodges .
The Province of NOTTINGHAMSHIRE , with its 18 lodges , was taken in charge by Bro . Enoch Hind , who acted as Provincial Steward , and compiled the very substantial list of £ 194 , and Bro . hia

DEVONSHIRE has latterly been showing far greater activity in behalf of our Charities , and has taken part in all the Festivals of this year , the sum raised for the Benevolent Institution in February , including Bro .

G . Though LINCOLNSHIRE played the leading part at the Girls' School Festival last year , when the Earl of Yarbo ough , Prov . G . M ., occupied the chair , and the Province supported his lordship to the extent of £ 1500 , it has not been wholly unrepresented at this year s

Such a series of contributions , though varying in amount from year to year , is an honour to thc Province , even though it has a muster roll of 42 lodges .
Passing to the Province of NORTHANTS AND HUNTS , which has done such excellent work under its present Prov . G .
