Philadelphia , by the year 1730 , when the Duke of Norfolk granted a deputation to Bro . Daniel Cox as Prov . Grand Master of New York , New Jersey , and Pennsylvania . There is , moreover , undoubted contemporary evidence
of the fact that meetings of the brethren were held in Philadelphia not long after the grant of the said deputation to Bro . Cox , this being the earliest testimony to the existence of the Craft in what are . now the United States of North America .
(/) Italy . Freemasonry has experienced , perhaps , greater vicissitudes ol fortune in this than in any other country . It has been persecuted and " denounced to an extent only less violent than in Spain , but , on the other hand , there have been times when it has received the protection oi Italian sovereigns . The earliest lodge is
said to have been established in Florence by Charles Sackville , Duke of Dorset , about 1729 , and a medal was struck in its honour . Latterly , since the establishment of the kingdom of Italy with Rome as its capital , Freemason ry has enjoyed a more prosperous career , and there are now 150 lodges on the roll of the Grand Orient , several of them being in foreign countries .
( k ) Grand Lodge " Alpina" Switzerland . Freemasonry found its way into Switzerland in 1737 , when a deputation was granted to Bro . George Hamilton , as Provincial Grand Master of Geneva . Periods
of persecution and prosperity followed alternately , but it was not till the formation of the Grand Lodge Alpina that the Craft may be said to have established itself on a sound and enduring basis .
(/) Anthony Sayer . But little of this brother is known beyond the fact that he was the premier Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England ; that about the year 1730 he was one of several brethren who were censured for being engaged in making Masons clandestinely , and that having fallen into poor circumstances he received a grant from the Fund of Charity .

in 1 S 39 , Pro Grand Master , 1 S 40-43 , and Grand Master , 1 S 43-70 , as ivell as Grand Z . during the same period . The " Zetland " Fund of ^ 3000 was raised in 1 S 70 to commemorate his long and distinguished services to the Craft . The family of which his lordship was a member has played a conspicuous part in Masonry . His grandfather , Lord
Dundas , was appointed Deputy Grand Master in 1 S 13 ; his father , the first earl , held the same office , and subsequently that of Pro Grand Master , in which latter he was succeeded by the subject of this note . The present Earl of Zetland was appointed Prov . Grand Master of North and Hast Yorkshire , in 1 S 74 , in succession to his relative .
(; ' ) Pennsylvania . Though the present Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania undoubtedly traces its origin directly back to the Prov . Grand Lodge established by the Grand Lodge "Ancients" of England in 17 G 4 , it is equall y beyond doubt that Masonry found its way into its capital city ,
Philadelphia , by the year 1730 , when the Duke of Norfolk granted a deputation to Bro . Daniel Cox as Prov . Grand Master of New York , New Jersey , and Pennsylvania . There is , moreover , undoubted contemporary evidence
of the fact that meetings of the brethren were held in Philadelphia not long after the grant of the said deputation to Bro . Cox , this being the earliest testimony to the existence of the Craft in what are . now the United States of North America .
(/) Italy . Freemasonry has experienced , perhaps , greater vicissitudes ol fortune in this than in any other country . It has been persecuted and " denounced to an extent only less violent than in Spain , but , on the other hand , there have been times when it has received the protection oi Italian sovereigns . The earliest lodge is
said to have been established in Florence by Charles Sackville , Duke of Dorset , about 1729 , and a medal was struck in its honour . Latterly , since the establishment of the kingdom of Italy with Rome as its capital , Freemason ry has enjoyed a more prosperous career , and there are now 150 lodges on the roll of the Grand Orient , several of them being in foreign countries .
( k ) Grand Lodge " Alpina" Switzerland . Freemasonry found its way into Switzerland in 1737 , when a deputation was granted to Bro . George Hamilton , as Provincial Grand Master of Geneva . Periods
of persecution and prosperity followed alternately , but it was not till the formation of the Grand Lodge Alpina that the Craft may be said to have established itself on a sound and enduring basis .
(/) Anthony Sayer . But little of this brother is known beyond the fact that he was the premier Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England ; that about the year 1730 he was one of several brethren who were censured for being engaged in making Masons clandestinely , and that having fallen into poor circumstances he received a grant from the Fund of Charity .
( m ) Folkes , Martin , said to have been an intimate friend ot Sir Christopher Wren . He is credited with having taken an active part in the Revival of 171 S . («) Michigan . There are no less than 343 lodges on the roll of this Grand Lodge , with a total membership of not very far short of 27 , 000 brethren .
