Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

occupied , many matters had to be postponed until May next . The lodge was then closed in due form . At rather a late hour the VV . M . invited the brethren to dine with him in the room set apart for that purpose , Bro . Venables having provided a most appetising repast , which all the guests appreciated after long abstinence . The W . M . acted as Chaplain .

On the removal of the cloth , the W . M ., in loyal terms , proposed "The Oueen andtheCraft ; " "The M . W . G . M ., the Prince of VVales ; " "The Pro G . M ., the Earl of Carnarvon ; " "The Deputy G . M ., the Earl of Lathom ; " and "Thc other Officers of Grand Lodge , Past and Present . " These were all well received and most heartily pledged .

Bro . J . J . Brinton , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the popular W . M ., Bro . Marsden . " He remarked he had never risen to propose a toast with more pleasurable feelings than on that occasion , inasmuch as their VV . M . had in the Temple discharged the onerous duties of the evening in a manner that could not be excelled . He appealed to those present to corroborate that assertion .

There were two reasons that afforded him ( the speaker ) so much pleasure—namely , the fact that the prestige of the lodge was upheld by the W . M ., and , moreover , that the visitors present should be both interested and edified with what they had seen and heard . Their incomparable ritual had that evening been rendered with a solemnity and readiness which demonstrated the care , patience , and

attention bestowed thereon in every detail . The impression thereof would be borne vividly in mind by them all for a long season . He did not intend to make a speech , for various reasons , which would unfold themselves as the evening advanced . He would , however , call on them to evince the estimation they cultivated towards their VV . M . by giving a Sphinx fire , and take their time from him , one and all .

The appeal was responded to con amore . The Worshipful Master , in acknowledging the to 3 st , observed that their Immediate Past Master at all times had kind words to express towards him ; but he feared that there was nevertheless an over estimation of his abilities . He had resolved on taking the chair—which had been filled by those whom he endeavoured to emulate—to do his utmost ,

though at a distance , to make himselt conversant with the duties of the office . Bro . Brinton was quite right when he said that he ( the W . M . ) was willing to be instructed . He was at all times , and appreciated the motives of the brethren who rendered him information . He would admit that the labours of the evening had been to him rather trying ; but if he had proved himself what had been represented

he was fully recompensed . He thanked them for their sympathy and esteem . After Bros . Voisey , Scriven , and Gooding had vocalised some excellent pieces of music , the VV . M . said there were ladies in an adjoining room who would alternate some music if the brethren did not deem it an "innovation" by their being present . The brethren with acclamation acceded to their presence , and therefore Mrs . Marsden , Mrs . Turney ,

and Miss Walker were introduced , the two former being vocalists , the latter being their accompanist on the pianoforte . The vocalisation of these ladies was far superior to that often heard . The introduction of this singing seemed to infuse new life into the meeting , and no wonder when the quality was so excellent and thc ability so perfect . Again and again the well-trained voices warbled forth music

allied to immortal verse . The W . M . proposed " The Visitors , " and "The Past Masters of the Lodge , " also "The Officers" thereof , all of which were acknowledged in very effective speeches . Bro . Jno . llernaman expressed a hope that the W . M . would convey to the ladies on behalf of the lodge the pleasure derived from their brilliant musical talents , and

anticipated that this was a prelude to other visits of a similar character . Bro . Bickerton endorsed the remarks of Bro . Hernaman , and the VV . M . promised to convey to the ladies the expression of feeling of which the brothers who had spoken were the exponents . The Tyler's toast concluded one of the most cheerful evenings presided over by the Master of this lodge , and perhaps we may venture to assert any other lodge .

being in attendance , he was impressively initiated into Freemasonry . Bro . Allardyce was passed to the Second Degree , both this and the former ceremony being rendered by the VV . M . in a very able manner . It was unanimously resolved that a vote of condolence be forwarded to the widow of the late Bro . Searle , who was for some time a respected member of this lodge , sympathising with her in

her distress . Propositions having been received for the next meeting , and other business transacted , the lodge was formally closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet . "The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , M . W . G . M ., " and "The Grand Officers , " were each proposed by the VV . M . in appropriate terms , and received by the brethren present with the customary

cordiality . Bro . J . L . Payne , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " and said that the brethren had all seen the very able manner in which Bro . A . Ferrar , VV . M ., had performed the ceremonies that evening , and he felt assured that the ensuing year would be a successful and prosperous one .

Bro . Arthur Ferrar , W . M ., tendered his sincere thanks to the I . P . M . for his kind remarks , and to the brethren for their hearty reception of the toast . It would be a sincere gratification to him if he performed his duties to their satisfaction . He was sure he could rely upon the support of the oflicers and brethren during his yearof office , and it would be his earnest endeavours to uphold the prestige

of the lodge , and promote the comfort of the brethren . Bro . A . Pettier in reply to the toast of "The Initiate , " said it had been his ambition for some time past to be initiated into Freemasonry . He thanked the membersof the lodge for their cordial reception , and especially the brother who so kindly proposed him . Bro . J . L . Payne , I . P . M .. responding on behalf of "The

Past Masters , " said that they one and all had the interests of the lodge at heart , and were always willing to render any assistance they could to thc W . M . who occupied the chair . Bro . VV . H . Lee , P . M ., Sec , replied for "The Treasurer and Secretary , " and said that as father of the lodge he took a very great interest in it , and expressed his regret that Bro . Brand , their respected Treasurer , was unavoidably

absent . " The Visitors " was proposed by the W . M ., who gave them a hearty welcome , and trusted they had spent an enjoyable and profitable evening . " The Visiting Brethren " responded , one and all expressing their admiration of the manner in which the ceremonies

were performed , and thanking the lodge for its profuse hospitality and very cordial reception . " The Oflicers " having been given , and responded to by Bro . Polak , S . occupied , many matters had to be postponed until May next .

Bro . J .

Their incomparable ritual had that evening been rendered with a solemnity and readiness which demonstrated the care , patience , and

The brethren with acclamation acceded to their presence , and therefore Mrs . Marsden , Mrs . Turney ,

Bro . Jno . llernaman expressed a hope that the W . M . would convey to the ladies on behalf of the lodge the pleasure derived from their brilliant musical talents , and
