Master , Provincial Grand Master of West Lancashire , was initiated in the Apollo University Lodge , ] S o . 357 , Oxford , in 185 (> , and has since occupied positions of eminence in all the principal systems of Masonry . After election into the chair of Worshipful Master in the . Harmony Lodge , No . 580 , Ormskirk , and sundry appointments

in Provincial Grand Lodge of West Lancashire , he was chosen as Dep . Provincial Grand Master in 1867 . Six years later he was installed Provincial Grand Master and Grand Superintendent , and in these oflices he has remained ever since to the very material advantage of the brethren under his rule . In Grand Lodge he served , firstly , as

Senior Grand Warden in 1863 , as Deputy Grand Master from 1875 to 1891 , and as Pro Grand Master in succession to the late Karl of Carnarvon from 18 . 91 till the present time , while in Supreme Grand Chapter he was Grand H . from 1875 to 1801 , aud has been Pro Grand Z . since the latter year . In Mark Masonry he has been successively Senior Grand

Warden iu 1871 , Dep . G . M . from 187 <> to 1878 , and M . W . G . M . from 1878 to 1881 , while he has presided over the Province of Lancashire for the last 20 years . In tbe Order of the Temple he was Groat Prior from 1877 till May of the present year , when he expressed a wish not to be re-elected , and was succeeded by the Karl

of Huston . In the Ancient and Accepted Rite he is the M . P . Sovereign Grand Commander , wliile as regards our Institutions , both local and Central , there are few brethren who have rendered them more important services , his lordship having presided as Chairman at some half-dozen Festivals of the latter , the most notable being the

Boys' School Festival in 1891 , when the total of the subscri p tions exceeded £ 29 , 000 , his own Province of West Lancashire being responsible for £ 612 ( i . The W . Lancashire Institutions are also greatly indebted to him for the care with which he has watched over

their interests , nor is there a Province which can point to such local Charities as the West Lancashire Educational , Hanier , and Alpass Institutions , the success of which , as we have said , his lordshi p has done so much to promote .

R . W . Bro . the Right Hon . the EARI , OK YAKHOHOUOII , Prov . G . M . of Lincolnshire , was initiated in the Studholme Lodge , No . 1591 , and having in November of the same year been elected a joining member of the Ermine Lodge , No . 2351 , Lincoln , was installed iu oilice as W . M . on the Kith May , 1893 , not very long after his Royal Highness

( J and Kio , which meet at Mark Masons'J lull , and has been perfected Rose Croix in the Adonirani Chapter , No . 101 , of th it degree . In May of the present year he presided as Chairman at the Anniversary Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , aud

was supportnd to the extent of upwards of £ 15 , 400 , towards which his own Province of Lincolnshire contributed £ 1500 . His groatgiandfather and grandfather , the first and second Earls of yarborough , were both of them prominent Masons , the latter in particular having been for a time Dep . Master to fhe late Duke of Sussex .

R . W . Bro . the Right Hon . Loitn GKOKOI ; HAMILTON 7 , M . P ., Secretary of State for India , Prov . G . Master of Middlesex , was made a Mason under the Irish Constitution , nor , owing to the pressure of his Parliamentary and other public duties , was it till about the year 1880 that he appears to have taken an active part in English Masonry .

In that year he was elected a joining member of the Chiswick Lod" -c No . 2012 , and having served the oilice of S . AVarden in 1888 , he was installed in the Master ' s chair iu due course . In 1889 he received the collar of S . G . Warden of England , and on the death of Bro . Col . Sir Francis Jim-deft , Bart ., Prov . G . Master of Middlesex , was chosen

his successor , his lordships patent or appointment healing date the 5 th July , 1892 . In 1894 he accepted , and was installed in , ( he oilice of G . Superintendent , both branches of Constitutional Masonry beiii" - thus p laced under his charge . In February of the present year he acted as Chairman at the Festival of the Roval . Masonic Benevolent

Institution , and has since had the satisfaction of learning that ( he amount raised in subscriptions and donations in response io his appeal ultimately exceeded thoseaiiiioiineed at all previous Festivals of

this Charity , its Jubilee in 1892 alone excepted . His lordshi p is justly popular , both in his Province and throughout the Craft Generally , and we have every confidence that under his auspices Middlesex as indeed it has done already , will eonf inne to prosper .

R . W . Bro . the Earl of hrsro . v , Prov . Grand Master of Northants anil Hunts , has rendered services to Freemasonry during the last nine or more years which it would bedillicult to commend adequately . Though not a Mason of very longstanding in the Craft , the progress he has made in fhe several branches of our Order is truly marvellous . His lordship himself slated at his installation as Provincial Grand

Master at Northampton on the 17 th October , 1887 , that ho was onl y at that time a young Mason , but it is clear that since then he has made amends for the shortness of his career by the extent of his labours . Thus it will in all probability suffice if wo content ourselves with enumerating the principal offices which his lordship holds

in the various branches of Masonry . In addition to being Prov . Grand Master of Craft Masonry of Northants and Hunts , he is its Grand Superintendent for the Royal Arch , having received his appointment to that post on the ( ith February , 1888 . Jii ~ the Mark , after serving successively as S . G . W . rfndD . G . M ., he was appointed Pro G .

Master , which oflice he still holds . Moreover , when , on the death of the late Bro . W . Kelly , that brother ' s Province was sub-divided , his lordshi p was appointed Prov . G . Master of two of the three . Provinces then created , namely , of Leicestershire and Rutland and Northants , Hunts , niul Bed ' s , his patents bearing date tho 29 th

October , 1894 . In the Order of the Temple , he was appointed , after the death of Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke , Great Sub-Prior of the National Great Priory of England aud Wales , while in May , on the resignation of the Karl of Lathom , he was unanimously elected to succeed him , and was forthwith installed in oflice as Grand Master .

In the Order of Rome and the Red Cross of Constantine , ho is tho head as M . 111 . G . Sovereign , while as regards the Grand Councils of the Royal and Select Masters and Allied Masonic Degrees , his lordship has the honour of being Grand Master of both Orders . In tho Ancient and Accepted Rite , ho is an Unattached member of the 1

Supreme Council , 33 . As regards what he has done for onr Institutions , his advocacy of their claims have been most successful . In February , 1889 , he presided as Chairman at , the Benevolent Festival , when the Returns exceeded £ 13 . 500 , and the year following , when , at the last moment , the Lord Mayor ( Bro . Sir- II . A . Isaacs ) was

prevented b y illness from taking tho chair , his lordship gave his services , and the total obtained in the way of donations and subscriptions was close on £ 13 , 850 , In 1893 , ho presided at the Festival of

the R . M . Institution Cor Girls , ( he total obtained being upwards of £ 14 , 000 . In 1890 , he was Chairman at the Festival ' of the Mark Benevolent Fund , and the total of £ 2311 ( hen obtained was the record total til ! the present year .

R . W . Bro . the Right Hon . Sir M . WIIITK RIDM-V , Bart ., M . P ., Secretary of State for the Home Department , may bo supposed to he hereditarily interested in the fortunes of Freemasonry , an ancestor of liis having been appointed Prov . Grand Master of Northumberland in 1824 . In 188 G , on the resignation of Bro . Earl Percy , who had

ruled the Province with great success for a period of 17 years , his Royal Highness the M W . G . M . selected Bro . Sir M . White Ridley as liis successor , am ] during the period that has since elapsed , Northumberland has well maintained its prestige . In 1894 , on the lamented death of Col . Addison Potter , G . B ., G . Superintendent , Sir

M . Ridley was appointed to succeed him , so that he is now the head of constitutional Masonry iu flic northernmost Province of England , He is a Life Governor of the Girls' School and Benevolent Institution , ami gave his services as a Steward at ( he Centenary Festival of the former Charitv .

Province has well maintained its reputation for ofhcieney , and the regularity of its support of our several Charities . In 187 G he was appointed S . G . Warden of the Mark G . Lodge , and three years later was chosen -Master of the then newly-formed Mark Province of Berks and Oxon ., front which he retired in 1890 . He is also

a Past Grand General of the Order of Rome and the Red Cross of Constantiue , and Hon . Vice-President of ( he Rosicrucian Society . On being appointed to succeed Bro . Lord Carringfon as Governor of the Colony of New South Wales his lordship had the honour of being

elected his successor , and was installed the second M . W . G . Master of its United Grand Lodge . At the conclusion of his Governorshi p ho returned to England and vacated his Colonial'Masonic Office . He is a Life Governor of all our . Masonic Institutions , and has served them likewise as a Festival Steward .

R . W . Bro . Sir OKI ' I . KV WAKK . MA . N , Bart ., Prov . G . Master of Shropshire , is a Past Master of the Churchill Lodge , No . 178 , Oxford , in which he appears to have been initiated and of which he was installed W . M . in 187 S . In 1 . 872 and again in 1878 he received Provincial honours in Oxfordshire , having been appointed Prov . G . Secretary in

the former year and Prov . S . G . Warden in the latfer . In 1881 he was installed W . M . of the Salopian Lodge , No . 2 ( 52 , Shrewsbury , and four years later , on the separation of Shropshire from North Wales , with which it had been associated , under the late R . W . Bro . Sir Watkin
