Provincial Grand Masters Under The Grand Lodge Of England.

rlcrin ° ' services of the very highest importance to two of our Institutions . In 1892 he occupied the chair at tho Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , when the subscriptions just

exceeded £ 69 , 000—the highest amount ever obtained at a Masonic Anniversary —wliile last year he performed a similar service for the Roval Masonic Institution for Girls , the amount returned in response to his appeal being upwards of £ 16 , 000 .

R . W . Bro . his Grace the Duke of DEVONSHIRE , K . G ., Lord President of the Council , Prov . G . Master of Derbyshire , stands second on the list of Provincial Grand Masters , having received his appointment when Marquess of Hartington , on the 9 th May , 1858 . He was , initiated in December , 1853 , in the Scientific Lodge , No . S 8 , while at

the University of Cambridge . He is the senior P . M . of the Lodge of Repose , No . 802 , Derby , and the senior P . Z . of tho Chapter of Truth , $ o . 731 , Derby . His Grace has also done good service to the Boys ' School , having twice presided at its Anniversary Festivals , namely ,

in 1 SS 5 , when the subscriptions amounted to a little over £ 12 , 000 , and during the present year , when they were announced as £ 18 , 777 and will no doubt ultimately be found to exceed £ 19 , 000 . His Grace has taken so active a part in the political world that it is not surprising he should have but little leisnre for the pursuits of Masonry .

R . W . Bro . the Hon . Sir H . STAFFORD NOIM ' HCOTK , Bart ., C . B ., M . P ., Prov . Grand Master of Devonshire , was initiated in the Apollo University Lodge , No . 357 , Oxford , as far hack as 1867 , when he was a student at Morton College , but his public duties have pressed so heavily upon his time , that it is onl y during the

past , lew years that we Hud him actively engaged in the duties of Masonry . However , he has been doing some excel lent service latterly , having presided over the Mark Province of Devon as its Grand Master since 1890 , while during the present year , on the resignation of Viscount Ebrington as Prov . Grand Master of Craft

Masonry in that comity , his Royal Highness the M . W G . M . was p leased to appoint him to the vacancy , and Bro . Sir Stafford was duly installed into oilice by his predecessor . Since then he has had the pleasure of consecrating a new lodge in a part of his Province never previously occupied , namely , the Trinity Lodge , No . 2595 ,

Buckfastleigh , and there is every reason to hope that under the guidance of one who is so deservedly popular , both in Craft and Mark Masonry , it will be greatly strengthened and extended . He is a

Royal Arch and Templar Mason , having been a member since 1890 of the St . George ' s Preceptory , No . ( 5 , and a Life Governor and Past Festival Steward of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

R . W . Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of WARWICK AXO BUGOKK , Prov . G . Master of Essex , was initiated while at Christ Church , Oxford , in the Churchill Lodge , No . -178 , and shortly afterwards joined the Apollo University Lodge , No . 357 . Subsequently—for his lordshi p was then known by the courtesy title of Lord Brooke—he joined the

Shakespeare Lodge , No . 284 , Warwick , and in 1882 was installed its W . M . In December of the same year the Prince of Wales was p leased to appoint him Prov . G . Master of Essex , in succession to the late Lord Teiiterden , and during the II-years that have since elapsed Freemasonry , under his lordship ' s guidance , has been continually

making progress , and at the present time numbers . ' { 8 lodges , of which ns many as 18 have been warranted since his accession to oilice . Lord Warwick is also a lloyal Arch Mason , was perfected Rose Croix in Ihe Oxford University Chapter , No . 40 , and has taken the 30 ° under the Supreme Council of the A . and A . Rite , lie is

also the Grand Supremo Ruler of the Order of the Secret . Monitor , having been elected to that position on the resignation , in 1895 , of Jim . Dr . ' Anehurie . As n . supporter of onr Institutions his huvl . sJiip has done tlieni good service , having presided as Chairman of the Festival held in behalf of the R . M . Institution for Girls in 1884 , when

the subscriptions exceeded £ 13 , 000 ; and of that of the R . M . Institution for Boys in 1893 , when they reached the splendid total of £ 21 , 840 . On one occasion he held his Prov . G-. Lodge at his residence , Easton Lodge , near Dunmow , and from tho manner in

which he lias interested himself in whatever concerns the well-being of the lodges-under his charge , it is needless to say that his lordshi p is highly respected throughout the length and breadth of his Province .

R . W . Bro . SIR MICIUE 7 , E . HTCKK-BKACII , Bart ,, M . P ., Chancellor of the Exchequer , Prov . G . Master of Gloucestershire , was initiated into Freemasonry during his career at , Christ Church , Oxford , in the Apollo University Lodge , No . 357 . On leaving tho Universit y he joined the Cotteswold Lodge , No . 592 , Cirencester , and is at

the present time the senior Past Master , having-occupied the chair in 1 S 61 . He subsequentl y joined the Westminster and Keystone Lodge , No . 10 , and was elected and installed its W . M . in 1 S 65 , in which year also he had the honour to be appointed S . G . Warden of England . In 1880 , on the resignation of Bro . Lord Sherborne , our

distinguished brother was appointed and installed Prov . G . Master of Gloucestershire , and under his administration the Province has prospered exceedingly , the part it has played from year to year in supporting our Institutions being in the highest degree praiseworthy . Sir M . Hicks-Beach is also a Royal Arch Mason of" eminence , having

served as Grand Principal Sojourner in 1865 . Towards the close of the vcar 1883 he became principal founder and first M . E . Z . of the Royal Gloucestershire Chapter , No . 839 , and shortly after that event , there being then three chapters in ( he Province , a Prov . G . Chapter was organised , with Comp . Sir M . Hicks-Beach at its head as G .

Superintendent . He does not seem , owing , no doubt to the very serious demands upon his time , as one of her Majest y ' s Miuisters , to have entered other branches of Masonry , but he has done good service to onr Institutions , having presided as Festival Chairman for each in turn , and having at fhe same time constituted himself a Vice-President of the three .

R . W . Bro . J . B . YU'ont GVKIIUIJ . V , M . A ., Prov . Grand Master of Guernsey and Alderney , is a very able and active member of our Order . His services are always at the disposal of those who need them for consecrations and other important functions , wliile it is in great measure through his endeavours that the lodges in Guernsey

and Alderney nave obtained their Provincial organisation . He is a member of all the different Masonic systems , being Prov . G . Master of Guernsey and Alderney , to which oilice ho was appointed in 1894 , a Past G . Deacon and G . Director of Ceremonies in the Grand Lodge

of Mark Master Masons , G . D . C . of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters , a Knight Templar of the Faith and Fidelit y Preceptory , No . 26 , and has taken the 32 ° in the Ancient and Accepted Rite . He is a supporter of all our Charitable Institutions , and has done good service in their behalf hy the numerous Stewardships ho has held .

R . W . Bro . W . W . 15 . Bi-. ini , M . P ., Prov . G . Master of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , is a member of close on 50 years' standing , having been initiated , in 1848 , in the Apollo Universit y Lodge , No . 357 , Oxford , while a student at Christ Church , his contemporaries being the late Bros . Canon Portal , Sir E . A . H . Lechmere , Bart ., M . P ., Prov .

G . M . Worcestershire , and G . Ward Hunt , M . P ., and the present Dean of York , Bro . the Yery llev . A . Pnrcy Cast , Past G . Chaplain . Almost from the outset of his career Bro . Beach appears to have taken a very active part iu Masonic pursuits . In 1851 , when Warden of his mother lodge , he was appointed Prov . J . G . D . of Oxfordshire , while

in 1852 he was installed W . M . and advanced to Prov . S . G . I ) . In 1854 he served his second Mastership of No . 357 , having in the interim heen appointed Prov . S . G . Warden .
