end a subscription list was opened under the sanction of St . John ' s Lodge , No . 4 !) 2 . Owing to the long vacancy in the Rectorship however , as it was not known what kind of memorial would be most acceptable , nothing was done in the matter ; but on the appointment of ( he Rev . Mr . Newns it was on his suggestion decided that it should be in the form of a solid brass altar desk witll a suitable inscription . The desk , as we have already made known , arrived hero by the mail of the 20 th ult ., and is a vei-y tine piece of work , executed by Bros . George Kenning & Son of

London , from a specification furnished hy Bro . R . H . K . Dyefct . It is thoroughly Masonic in design . From a base representing a tesselated pavement spring three columns of the Ionic , Doric and Corinthian Orders which support a hinged brass plate for the book . This plate is of open work : in the centre is a shield bearing a Latin inscription , having at the head a radiated cross , and at the end tho

emblem of a P . M . W . S . of a Rose Croix Chapter , the oilice held by our Brother at the time of his death . , On either side of the shield are displayed the square and compass of Craft Masonry , and tho pelican feeding her young with her blood , within the compass and segment , the emblem of ( he Rose Croix Degree . At the top of tho

plate is the time-honoured introit from the Mass for the Dead . " Requiem ccternam dona et Doinine ; ct Lux Perpctua luceal ci , " and at the base the text from Timuthi / II . 4 . 7 . " Uonuni certanem certavi , cursum coiisunnnavi Fidcin scrvaci . " The inscription on the shield is : —

BO a . m ., and after the Xvd Collect during the singing of Hymn 427 A . and M . on the Eucharisfic Tapers being lit , and the Rector entering the Sanctuary , the Committee advanced to the altar rails , the desk being borne by

Bro . Dyett , from whom it was received h y the Church Warden , William Goodwin , Esq ., and by him presented to the Rector , who placed it on the altar with the usual formalities . A special Collect was then recited , after which the Ceremony of tbe Mass was proceeded with . In the unavoidable absence of Bro . Haines , Chaplain of St . John ' s Lodge , the Sermon was preached by the Rector from

Revelation XXI , 22 . He dwelt with force on the building up of the Spiritual Edifice not made with hands , the square stones of which are ( he souls of just men made perfect ; and , at fhe close , on acknowled g ing the presentation , paid a touching tribute to the late Rector , who , he said indeed had , like St . Paul magnified his office , and while a great theological scholar was also a holy and devout priest .

It is with great pleasure that we record this public honouring of onr departed Brother of whom we may well feel proud ; for his name is written on the roll of Britain ' s learned ones ; "being dead yet speaketh .
