The Two Angels.
The Two Angels .
( PARTM" ADAPTED FROM TITE GF . UMAX ) . By the Author of " The Noble Soul , " " The Submerged City , " " God's Flowers , " , ye . One evening when the setting sun Diffused afar his light ,
And tinged , with radiant hues , the clouds So beautiful and bright , Two beings of immortal mould , In brotherly embrace , Together linked by many a tie , Surveyed the human race .
Twin spirits they ; of Sleep the one , Tho other was of Death ; This spread o ' er man his shadowy wings , That caught his fleeting breath .
Upon a grassy mound they lay , The peasant cots below ; Whilst mournfully the evening bell Rang distantly and low .
O'er evening now the peaceful night , Her sable curtain spread , And far and wide o ' er Nature ' s face , Her dewy influence shed .
When , rising from his moss-grown conch , Sleep ' s angel , with his hand , Scattered the grains of slumber o ' er Invisibly the land .
Now , on the weary peasant fell , Borne by the evening wind , The seeds of slumber widely spread , So precious to mankind ;
The hoary vet'ran with his staff , The babe in cradle left , Old age and infancy alike , In balmy slumber slept .
In sweet forgetfulncss , the sick No longer feel their pains , The mourner , with her heartfelt grief , A rest from sorrow gains ;
Ivcn poverty , with anxious cares , And many ills opprest , Alike with wealth , by gentle sleep , Is nursed and hushed to rest .
Completed now his grateful ( ask , The heavenly angel smiled A beam of joyous innocence , Known only to a child .
" Oh happiness unspeakable ! A bliss that none may share , Unseen and secretly to watch With love and pitying care . "
" O ' er these , God's children here on earth , Offspring of love divine , His earthly jewels purified , As Heavenly gems to shine ;
The Two Angels.
Soon , as again the morning dawn Shall bathe in golden light Each hill and p lain , and banish hence The shadows of the nig ht . " " Oh ! then shall men with grateful hearts ,
To God their voices raise , And hymns of thankfulness attest , His glory and His praise ;
Me , as their friend , shall mortals bless , And benefactor name , The soother of Life ' s bitter cares , Refuge from sin and shame . "
Thus spoke Sleep ' s angel , and again Where Death his brother lay , Ho turned , with radiant face , to look Upon the fading day ;
With mournful looks Death ' s angel gazed , And down his features stole Tears only by immortals shed , Outpourings of his soul .
" Ah , hapless fate ! Man ne er on me His blessings will bestow , Spoiler of p leasure am I called ,
Of happiness the foe . The mother , widowed and forlorn , When lost her only jcy , Sees but in me a hateful form , Who looks but to destroy . "
' The children orphaned and bereft Of mother ' s fost ' ring care , The lover , husband , and the wife , ( For none Death ' s shafts must spare . )
All , all on me in anguish call , But call , alas ! in vain , That spared awhile , some darling one , Might yet on earth remain . "
" Not then on mc may blessings fall , From those who vainly grieve , No thanks from mortals hope to have , No welcome to receive .
Ah me ! a bitter cup I give , Which all must shudd ' ring drain , And , though I would withhold tho draught , I never dare refrain . "
" Nay , brother , there is comfort yet , " Sleep ' s angel then replied , " The dying Christian welcomes thee , When standing at his side ;
In thee no terrors fright the soul , God ' s messenger art thon , And calmly to His hol y will Submissively will bow . "
" The Gate of Life ! to which th y hand A welcome entrance makes , A peaceful sleep from which the just To life immortal wakes ;
Will not the Christian hail with joy , Thy coming and prepare On heavenly pinions to ascend , To regions bright and fair . "
