E following account of some Certificates rarel y met fe ^ P §> ucp | f with , will , I think , be of interest not onl y to ' % (( ww }) I I collectors , but also to the general readers of the J |\^^ $ / I Freemason . The originals are in my possession . || bl ^ S ^ .= yj . The first is a small parchment , eight-and-a-half

inches by eleven inches , around the ougc ot which is a stencilled dosign , the body of the Certificate being partly printed and partly written . The Lodge referred to was originall y No . 98 , " Army Lodge , " held in Elizabeth Castle , Jersey , under a Warrant

from the "Ancients , " dated 1762 . * The Lodge was transferred to Guernsey on payment of £ 21 to Grand Lodge for the Charity Fund , and is now known as "Doyle ' s Lodge of Fellowship , No . 84 . The upper seal has a sun in the centre , rising from behind a heart ,

beneath which is a ribbon inscribed "Be Virtuous and be Happy . " At the top of the seal is a cannon resting on a scroll , at one end of which is an L , and at the other "No . 1 . " The other seal is nearly defaced , but I believe it bears the arms of the Province . It runs thus : —¦

In witness whereof we have given him this Certificate ( which he himself has signed ; that he , wifh Joy and Satisfaction , may meet with a good reception from all enlightened Brethren , returning the same to every Brother who may present himself to him , with an equally just title .

myself . It measures ST inches by 9 h inches , and is printed from a plate "Br . Wm . Bali , Del in . " and " * J . Walton , Sculp . " The two pillars are surmounted by globes , one of which bears a . map of the Western Hemisphere and the other various constellations , with part of the Zodiac , showing the signs of Aries , Taurus , Gemini , and Leo , Cancer being for some reason displaced . The Bible is open at " JOHN . "

The wording of ( ho Certificate will be clearly seen in the reproduction , so I need only note that flic expiession— " The Order of the holy ST . MARK " . is unusual and curious , and C 0 ( chief overseer ) is used instead of M 0 .

No . 3 is also the only Certificate of the kind I have met with . It is not Masonic , but of the "Soeiete ties Conipngnnns Passants Cliarpentiers" at Paris . The square , compasses , and other Craft emblems are shown , together with a multitude of carpenter ' s tools
