A Philosophic Glance at Freemasonry .

t $ ^ l | j || e [ lPEAKING or writing in an . ordinary way on Masonic S »\^ gg |||\( ll subjects is rather like describing a journey one side of ! nr \|§ S * Vn ? ^ r 0 ild of which is bounded . by a stout fence , the I ] 1 ^^^ J | . other open to an expansive common . Facts as cstab-^ iglSig ^ SiJ lished by documentary 7 evidence prevent straying in one direction , whilst on the open plains of tradition

in the other ( here is an alluring freedom which invites the imagination to wander afield and revel untrammelled in unlimited enjoyment . The facts present an obstacle difficult . to get over , and the

readily-satisfied ordinary Mason does not tackle . them ; perhaps he has an uncomfortable sort of feeling that , as they 7 are unpleasant to encounter , so they might , if penetrated , lead to results which he would prefer not to dwell upon . Warned off the flowery meads of tradition on his right by cautious friends , and checked by thorny problems difficult of solution on his left , our traveller turns his attention to the road

itself . 1 his he discovers is varied , aud whilst fot the most part easy of locomotion is not free from ruts . The majority of his companions , he finds , stroll along pleasantl y enough on the smooth level of common-place ; whilst others follow the various grooves . In other Avords , and continuing ( he metaphor , in the path of Masonic life we see various phases . There is the easy-going , irresponsible ,

mirthloving Mason who whistles through his Masonic journey from sheer lig htness of heart : that is one type . Alongside him , but in a groove so deep that they cannot even be dragged out of it , trudges cheerfully on it chosen band , who loudl y proclaim their achievements , and over whose shoulders they preudly display it banner . Emblazoned in letters of gold their device , " Masonic Charities , " flashes in the

sunbeams as they 7 exultingly press forwards . in another rut oi track , stony , difficult , and narrow , picking their way with careful steps , comes a much smaller troop . They are pale of complexion , anxious , brow furrowed ; each , whilst on excellent terms wilh himself , IOJICS perhaps a trifle askance at his fellows , but they 7 are companionable withal . One , with melancholy joy and pious exultation ,

clutches a tattered manuscrip t to his breast ; a second exhibits with conscious pride a Grub-street dog-eared tonic ; whilst a third displays , perhaps a little ostentatiously , a newly-bound volume gaudy in trappings of cloth and gilt . These arc the Masonic students . Let us glance for the moment at the types indicated . The first may be shortly discussed and readily dismissed , and yet his name is < i ; i

legion . It is to the enthusiast a lamentable but still undoubted fact that a very large number of so-called Freemasons have no interest in the institution of which they are members , care nothing , except in a seini-contemptuous way , for its admirable Charities , will perhaps pul off an importunate steward wilh a jestingly-tossed guinea , and will turn with increased zest and satisfaction to the delights of what 1 1 i i ]

in the other ( here is an alluring freedom which invites the imagination to wander afield and revel untrammelled in unlimited enjoyment . The facts present an obstacle difficult . to get over , and the

readily-satisfied ordinary Mason does not tackle . them ; perhaps he has an uncomfortable sort of feeling that , as they 7 are unpleasant to encounter , so they might , if penetrated , lead to results which he would prefer not to dwell upon . Warned off the flowery meads of tradition on his right by cautious friends , and checked by thorny problems difficult of solution on his left , our traveller turns his attention to the road

itself . 1 his he discovers is varied , aud whilst fot the most part easy of locomotion is not free from ruts . The majority of his companions , he finds , stroll along pleasantl y enough on the smooth level of common-place ; whilst others follow the various grooves . In other Avords , and continuing ( he metaphor , in the path of Masonic life we see various phases . There is the easy-going , irresponsible ,

mirthloving Mason who whistles through his Masonic journey from sheer lig htness of heart : that is one type . Alongside him , but in a groove so deep that they cannot even be dragged out of it , trudges cheerfully on it chosen band , who loudl y proclaim their achievements , and over whose shoulders they preudly display it banner . Emblazoned in letters of gold their device , " Masonic Charities , " flashes in the

sunbeams as they 7 exultingly press forwards . in another rut oi track , stony , difficult , and narrow , picking their way with careful steps , comes a much smaller troop . They are pale of complexion , anxious , brow furrowed ; each , whilst on excellent terms wilh himself , IOJICS perhaps a trifle askance at his fellows , but they 7 are companionable withal . One , with melancholy joy and pious exultation ,

clutches a tattered manuscrip t to his breast ; a second exhibits with conscious pride a Grub-street dog-eared tonic ; whilst a third displays , perhaps a little ostentatiously , a newly-bound volume gaudy in trappings of cloth and gilt . These arc the Masonic students . Let us glance for the moment at the types indicated . The first may be shortly discussed and readily dismissed , and yet his name is < i ; i

legion . It is to the enthusiast a lamentable but still undoubted fact that a very large number of so-called Freemasons have no interest in the institution of which they are members , care nothing , except in a seini-contemptuous way , for its admirable Charities , will perhaps pul off an importunate steward wilh a jestingly-tossed guinea , and will turn with increased zest and satisfaction to the delights of what 1 1 i i ]
