the Grand Master , yet the appointment had to be confirmed by Grand Lodge ; however , he did not apprehend that the confirmation would be wanted . He was exceedingly pleased to be with them , although it was the installation day of his own lodge at Colchester , of which he was the Se retary . He trusted the lodge would go on and prosper , that it was so doing was shown by the fact of the three
brethren raised that day ; and , in conclusion , thanked them again for their good wishes . A cordial vote of thanks was then accorded Bro . Burroughs for his services as Installing Officer , and that brother briefly returned thanks . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Golden Lion , Bro . Reynolds' famous old hostelry .
where , under the immediate superintendence of that jovial brother , they partook of an admirably served banquet . The Worshipful Master then gave "The Queen and the Craft , " and then " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Grand Master of England , " eulogising mother and son for their many virtues , and the pattern they set to all classes by the order and regularity of their lives and actions .
The toast of "The Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Carnarvon ; the Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom ; and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was coupled with the name of Bro . Railing , who , in response , reiterated his doubt as to whether he was at present a Grand Officer or not ; however , he would not shrink from replying to the toast , especially
as they seemed determined that he was one . He held it , then , tobe a great honourto receive such a distinction upon the occasion of her Most Gracious Majesty's Jubilee , the fiftieth year of her reign over a people who loved and honoured her for he virtues , and the splendour of her reign . The meeting at the Albert Hall the other day was a grand gathering of Masons , and he felt it a great
honour to be called on to receive at the hands of H . R . H . the Grand Master the distinction conferred on him . On behalf of Grand Lodge he , therefore , cordially thanked them for their hearty reception of the toast . The Worshipful Master then proposed the toast of "The M . W . Bro . Lord Brooke , Prov . Grand Master ; the V . W . Bro . Philbrick , Dep . Prov . Grand Master ; and the Grand
Officers , Present and Past , of the Province of Essex . " He said the Liberty of Havering was essentially a loyal lodge ; they had just paid honours to Grand Lodge , and now honoured Provincial Grand Lodge . In Bros . Lord Brooke and Philbrick they had leaders of whom they were proud , while there were several brethren present whom , as Past and Present Grand Officers , it was their duty to honour .
Nor did he think that he should sit down without speaking of the great strides Masonry had made in the province under their jurisdiction , which he attributed in a great measure to their indefatigable- Grand Secretary , Bro . Railing . He was proud to say that on the 26 th July next Provincial Grand Lodge would hold its annual meeting at Romford , under the auspices of the Liberty of Havering
Lodge , and he hoped the brethren would do all they could to make the meeiing a memorable one . They thanked Bro . Railing for his attendance , especially as it was the installation day of his own lodge ; it showed the great honour he had paid them , and for it , in their name , he thanked him , and asked them to drink the toast with all the enthusiasm it deserved .
Bro . Railing said he felt more at home in responding to that toast than to the preceding one , and was pleased to hear the kind manner in which their VV . M . spoke of the Giand Officers . As to Bro . Philbrick , he had so many calls upon his time that it was impossible for him to be everywhere , or attend to every invitation . He must say that they looked forward to their meeting at Romford in
July next with a great deal of pleasure , and had no doubt of a good meeting , especially as it was upon the main line , whereas at Saffron Waldon last year they had a very poor one , because it was such an out of the way place . In 187 S they had added seven or eight lodges to the strength of the province , and were proud of the position they held . He wished the lodge every success and the W . M . a
pleasant year of office , and resumed his seat amid rounds of applause . Bro . Heasman said he had but little to say , as he was only a babe ten months old , but he esteemed it a very great honour to serve under Lord Brooke . It was an honour he never expected would fall to his share , and he attributed it more to the lodge than to any merits of his own .
Bro . White said there was very little left for him to say , except to express the pleasure at having Bro . Railing with them that day representing Grand Lodge . Bro . Railing had told them of the pleasure he anticipated at the next meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge at Komford , and he
could assure him that the members of the Liberty of Havering Lodge would do their best to realize that anticipation . Bro . Manning , as one of Ihe senior officers of the lodge , felt it a great honour to have his name coupled with the toast , and if there was anything he could do for that or any other lodge in the province he should only be too happy
to do it . Bro . Burroughs then proposed the toast of "The VV . M ., " and said that in re-electing Bro . Humphreys to the chair for the second time they had put the right man ir . the right place , especially as Provincial Grand Lodge intended to honour their lodge with its presence in July next . He spoke highly of the many excellent qualifications of
their W . M ., and trusted at the end of his second year of office to present him with a jewel worthy of his reception . Bro . Humphreys—who is exceedingly and deservedly popular among the brethren — was received with hearty cheers as he rose to respond . He said the brethren would scarcely credit it , but he found it a very difficult thing to speak about himself ; but the language of Bro . Burroughs
called upon him to make an effort , while their reception of the toast was most gratifying . It was the proudest moment of his life when he was chosen to preside over them for the second time ; but he could not help thinking that they were not cairying out the Darwinian theory of the selection of the fittest , but nevertheless he could assure them that he deeply thanked them for the honour done him , and should remember it with pleasure to the longest day
of his existence . Seven years ago , when he was initiated by Bro . Manning , he had but one object in view , and that was to get to that chair he now occupied ; but he never thought his ambition would be so fully realised as it had been both last year and this . Whenever he came amongst them he always enjoyed himself ; in fact , it was one of the greatest pleasures of his life to be with them ; and , no matter how long or how short his life might be , he should always

look back with , pardonable pride upon that—the Jubilee year . He trusted it might prove a red-letter day in the annals of the Liberty of Havering Lodge , and could assure them that he never could forget their kindness , and for it he thanked them from the bottom of his heart . Several other toasts followed , and the Tyler ' s toast concluded the business and pleasures of the meeting .
We may mention that a new banner graced the lodge ; it is of pale blue silk , and bears the arms of the " Liberty of Havering , " a towered gateway , surrounded by a wreath with the legend— " Liberty of Havering , No . 1437 , consecrated June , 1 S 73 . " The edging is of blue and white fringe , the whole being exceedingly handsome , and is the design of , and manufactured by , Bro . George Kenning .

Bro . Hollis was appointed Charity Commissioner . After the close of the lodge a very splendid banquet was served in the Village Hall , to which some 35 brethren sat down . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were drunk . Bro . Mason , P . J . G . D . Middx ., responded for the toast of "The Charities , " whose claims on the sympathies of the brethren he urged in a very neat speech . Bro . Knight , VV . M . 1507 , and others , responded for "The Visitors . "

the Grand Master , yet the appointment had to be confirmed by Grand Lodge ; however , he did not apprehend that the confirmation would be wanted .
