festival of St . John by a banquet , which gave the greatest satisfaction to all , and was deserving of the highest praise to the fair hostess . When the appetites of the brethren were appeased , and grace after meat had been said , the toast list was proceeded with . That of "The Queen and the Craft" was received with every manifestation of pleasure , and heartily drunk . The toast of "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , and the
rest of the Royal 1-amily was next given and well responded to . "The M . W . Pro Grand Master , Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon , " "The R . W . D . G . M ., the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , and the" rest of the Grand Officers , Past and Present , " were the next healths drunk , after which that of "The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Lieut .-Col . Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie , " was drunk with enthusaism . Bro . P . M . Norton then rose and
proposed "Ihe Health of their new VV . M ., Bro . Robert Dottie . " In the course of his remarks Bro . Norton observed that it gave him especial pleasure to have the privilege of proposing this toast , inasmuch that he was very pleased to find Bro . Dottie placed in the proud position he now occupied . He sincerely trusted their W . M . would have a prosperous year of office , and felt sure that all the members w > uld unite in doing their
utmost to ensure such a result . The toast was received with acclamation and cordially responded to by all . Bro . Dottie , in reply , said he felt much obliged to Bro . Norton for his kind remarks , and to the brethren for so cordially responding to the toast . He had been present on many occasions like the present , and had heard many newlyinstalled Masters say , in responding to the toast of their health , "This is the proudest moment of my life . " So far
as he was concerned he sincerely echoed that sentiment , and he " " approached his duties with some pleasure , but at the same time with fear and trembling . Bro . Dottie said he hoped he should leave the lodge at the expiration of his year of office in as good a position as he found it , and he would do his best to further its interests , and assured them he would do the work to the best of his ability . Bro . Sturm , P . M ., in proposing "Thc Health of the I . P . M .,
Bro . Burgess , " said he was quite sure such a toast would meet with the approbation of the brethren , as they were fully aware of what he had done for the welfare of the lodge during his year of office . It was impossible to speak too hi g hly of the efforts which their I . P . M . had made to maintain the integrity and promote the prosperity of his lodge , and he had succeeded worthily and well . It gave him great pleasure to place upon his breast a gold Past
Master's jewel , as a slight token of the esteem and respect in which the brethren held him . Bro . Burgess said that when he reflected on the kind and flattering remarks passed on him by Bro . Sturm he felt he had not done sufficient to deserve them , but he also felt very pleased that his humble efforts had given satisfaction . He was gratified to see so many able P . M . 's around them that da }' , and to note thc cordiality
that existed between them and their present W . M ., because when such unity existed there augured a prosperous career for the lodge . The lodge had done what it could for the Charities , but he hoped more would be done in the future . He had in the handsome jewel before him a tangible proof of the brethren s respect , and he accepted it with unalloyed pleasure , and should wear it with pride . Bro . Dottie then proposed " The Health
of the Initiate , " Bro . VV . G . Baxter , in the course of which he said he considered that Bro . Baxter was like a child of his own , and it pleased him to perceive that thc brethren received the toast with such eclat , as he knew no one more fitted to join their ranks than Bro . Baxter . Bro . VV . G . Baxter having responded , the I . P . M ., Bro . Burgess , proposed "The Installing Master , " Bro . Bidder , and referred to thc admirable manner in which the ceremony of
Installation had been done , and of thc reputation he had worthily obtained for his ability . Bro . S . P . Bidder acknowledged thc compliment . "The Health ofthe Visitors " was next proposed , and responded to by Bros . Benjamin Brierley , George Board , 179 S , VV . Dawson , W . M . 1219 , S . Davies , P . M . 1052 , and R . R . Lisenden , 317 ( Freemason ) . Several other toasts weie proposed and responded to , and the brethicn separated at a late hour .

At the banquet which followed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , that of "The W . M . " being heartily received . The principal event of thc evening was the presentation to Bro . , valuable gold chronometer watch , and a tasteful set of bracelets for Mrs . Burgess , on his leaving England for Australia . Bro . John H . Bradshaw , P . M ., on behalf of the brethren , said he had a pleasing yet painful duty to perform that evening , viz ., to propose "The Health of Bro . Burgess , " possibly for the last time , and fo offer for
his acceptance the gifts subscribed for by the brethren as some slight token of the esteem and affection they felt for him . He concluded by wishing him every success in his new sphere of life . Thc toast was enthusiastically received , after which Bro . Burgess replied . He said that on no occasion during the past ten years during which he had been connected with 132 % , had he risen with so much

feeling to respond to any toast . He regretted extremely having to leave so many friends and dear brethren , and he could not sufficiently thank them for the handsome testimonial they had given nim , and he would be proud to show it to his Masonic friends abroad . He also felt touched b y their kind thoughtfulness in remembering Mrs . Burgess in the matter . He personally considered himself amply repaid
by the pleasure he had experienced in the Stanley Lodge for anyefforts he liad made . He by no means meant to sever his connection with 1325 , and if he ever returned it would be to rest in the bosom of the Stanley Lodge . He again thanked the brethren for all their kindness . During
the evening several songs were rendered to thc great satisfaction of the brethren by Bros . J . Pugmire , 241 ; VV . Forrester , 1035 ; J . P . Bryan , 1035 and 203 ; Gray , 1325 ; Ashmore , P . M . MALTA . —Wayfarers' Lodge . — The first installation meeting of the above lodge took place at the Masonic Hall , Valletta , on 27 th May . The officers of St . John and St . Paul Lodge , No . 349 , having opened their lodge , the R . VV . District Grand Master , Bro . W . Kingston , was received with the customary honours , and proceeded , with the usual ceremonies , to instal the VV . Master
designate of the new lodge—Bro . Geo . D . Roe , P . M . 1604 ( Serjt .-Major Royal Engineers)—in the chair of K . S . The VV . M . then invested his oflicers as follows : Bros . J . S . Abbott , S . W . ; D . C . VVilson , J . W . ; J . F . Mayall , Sec ; J . Morley , S . D . ; J . Pegley , J . D . ; and T . VV . Cooper , I . G . The appointments of Treasurer and Tyler were allowed to stand over until next meeting . The VV . M .
proposed , and Bro . Taylor , P . M ., seconded , "That a vote of thanks be accorded to the officers of Lodge 349 for their kindness in having met that evening for the reception of the Wayfarers . " W . Bro . Coffey , P . M . 349 , in replying on behalf of his lodge , testified to the cordial feelings of Lodge 349 towards the lodge just floated , and assured the VV . M . that the officers and brethren of 349 would be only
too pleased at any time to assist the Wayfarers in any way , although he ( Bro . Coffey ) felt sure that no assistance was likely to be needed by a lodge started so auspiciously and under such competent officers . The VV . M . next proposed a vote of thanks to the R . VV . District Grand Master for attending ( at some personal inconvenience ) to instal the first VV . M . of the Wayfarers , and for the highly efficient
and impressive way in which he performed that ceremony . The R . W . D . G . M ., in replying , expressed his gratification at being present , and alluded to the fact of the lodges under his jurisdiction having now reached the mystic number of seven , whereas when he first became D . G . M . there were only three in the district . The Right Worshipful brother proceeded to express his confidence in the ability of the
newly-installed W . M . to govern his lodge with credit to himself and . satisfaction to those under his rule , advising him , at the same time , that a judicious combination of firmness and suavity , an appearance of leading rather than driving , was always preferable to mere dogmatism . He concluded by saying that as a member of all the lodges in the district he tendered the
Hearty good wishes of all for the prosperity of the Wayfarers . V . W . Bro . the Chevalier E . Rosenbusch , D . G . M ., stated that he fully endorsed all that had been said by his R . VV . colleague , and that he should at an }' time esteem it a pleasure to be able to render any service to the "Wayfarers . " Bro . Austin , P . M . 15 S ; Bro . S . G . Veoman , VV . M . 407 ; and Bro . G . Crabtree ,
VV . M . United Brethren Lodge , tendered the "Hearty good wishes " of their respective lodges . Bro . Mattocks , P . M . 3 S 7 , I . C , tendered the " Hearty good wishes " of the Irish Constitution . The lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to a well furnished table , where , after due refreshment , many excellent speeches were made , which it would be impossible to notice adequately within the limits
of the present article . Suffice it to say that R . VV . Bro . Kingston , V . W . Bro . Rosenbusch , VV . Bro . Coffey , VV . Bro . Watson , and others , all spoke in most hopeful terms of the future of the " Wayfarers . " Much mirth was caused during the e / eningby thc amusing tricks of a well known amateur legerdemainist , a brother of Lodge 349 . It is intended that thc Wayfarers Lodge shall consist solely of members of Her Majesty ' s army .

Several other toasts weie proposed and responded to , and the brethicn separated at a late hour .

his acceptance the gifts subscribed for by the brethren as some slight token of the esteem and affection they felt for him .

During

Paul Lodge , No . 349 , having opened their lodge , the R . VV . District Grand Master , Bro . W . Kingston , was received with the customary honours , and proceeded , with the usual ceremonies , to instal the VV . Master

proposed , and Bro .
