At the above galleries there is a small collection by the artist we have named . He is evidently a young man who possesses originality . Some of his decorative effects evince future promise . We would encourage him to give his fancy free scope ; at the same time we would kindly warn him not to run riot in colour , to which there seems to be a tendency in some of his pictures . We are pleased with Nos . 4 , Grouse ; 8 , " J ust the Day for the Ducks "—very good ; 19 , Night ; 20 , The Oatfield ; 31 , Feeding-time ; 35 , Early Sunrise . We hope to see more of his work later on .

Miss Kate Bishop , an old-time favourite at the Vaudeville under the James and Thome management , is about to produce a modern comedy at a series of matinees at the Lyric Theatre .

United Manners' Lodge , No . 30 . The annual ladies' banquet , held under the auspices of the United Mariners' Lodge , No . 30 , was held on Tuesday evening , the 20 th ult ., at the Restaurant Frascati , Oxford-street . The members of the lodge turned up in force , together with a large number of visitors , the majority of whom , as a matter of course , belonged to the fair sex . Prior to the banquet the brethren present attended to the duties of the lodge ,

which included the initiation of Mr . Karl B . Bretzshmar . Bro . G . tagg , W . M ., was ably assisted by Bros . F . C . Foster , S . W ., and | . F . Croager , J . W ., and the trio demonstrated their ability to attend to the working of the lodge in a highly satisfactory manner when called upon to do so . Since Bro . Page entered upon his term of office , there has been little work to test his ability in the chair . After the purely Masonic business had received attention , an adjournment was one of the reception-rooms , where the brethren entertained their lady visitors . The banquet which followed was served in the Louis VI . Hall , and reflected the greatest credit upon the chef of the Restaurant Frascati . . ,. . After the tables had been cleared the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were disposed of with musical honours . . . _ . . _

Bro . William Newbold rendered "At Benediction . " The vocal effort of Miss Gertrude Tait , " When the heart is young , " was received with applause . Bro . T . Smith , P . M ., evoked roars of laughter by singing " In the glorious days to come " and " The world went very well then . " Vaiiety was given to the programme by Master J . fox , a pupil of Bro . Newbold , who gave a most creditable performance on the violin , the solo being selected from " faust . " Miss Ethel Humphreys , a daughter of Bro . D .

Humphrey ' s , sweetly rendered "Lovely spring , " but was heard to even greater advantage in " A Hindu song of despair . " One of the visitors , Bro . Fred . W . Stephens , P . M ., introduced the humorous element with " When father laid the carpet " and "The burglar ' s serenade , " and in response to a spirited encore sang "Lucky Jim " and " Girlie , Girlie . Humphreys , as usual , found he had an appreciative audience with his musical sketch— " The Silver Wedding "—and a character sketch from Dickens ' s " Sergeant Buzfuz . "

Bro . E . Carrick , P . M ., the lodge Organist , presided at the piano throughout . A most pleasant evening ' s entertainment terminated at midnight .

The I . P . M . submitted the toast of "The W . M . " In the course of his remarks , he spoke of the attention paid by Bro . Slade to his duties as an officer of the lodge . He felt confident that in the high position that he ( the VV . M . ) now held the work would be as equa )) y we )) performed . The Peace and Harmony Lodge had its traditions and privileges to uphold , and in the hands of the present W . M . they would lose none of their lustre . J he VV . M ., in reply , expressed his great acknowledgments to the lodge . His great ambition had been to become Master ot the lodge that could show an unbroken record of existence of 162 years . He hoped during his year to hive some work to do .

The W . M . then gave "The Installing and LP . Master . " In his speech the W . M . alluded to the very pleasant year of ollice that Bro . Robinson had had . The I . P . M . also was to be congratulated on the great success that attended the summer outing and subsequent banquet at the famous Mitre Tavern , Hampton Court , In conclusion , he trusted that the I . P . M . would live many years to wear the iewel that had been presented to him that evening . The I . P . M . expressed his acknowledgments in a pertinent , but happy , speech . The toasts of " The Visitors , " " lhe Cast Masters , " and " The Officers " termi-Hated a highly successful meeting .

The lodge was opened , and , after the minutes had been confirmed , a ballot was taken for the Rev . J . H . Hastings , who was declared duly elected , and was initiated by the W . M ., the working tools being presented by Bro . O . G . Tayler , J . W ., and the charge given by the I . P . M ., Bro . Laughton . The W . M . then presented to the Treasurer , Bro . G . Potter-Kirby , a Treasurer's jewel , on behalf of the members of the lodge . In doing so , he said it was one of the most gratifying incidents of his year of office then drawing to a close ; and he referred to the Masonic

record of Bro . Potter-Kirby , extending over a period of 30 years , and showing a considerable amount of valuable work done for the lodge in various offices . In 1 S 96 he was elected Treasurer , an office he had held up to the present time , during which period the extension of the lodge premises had taken place , and entailed a large amount of extra work on the Treasurer . The gift he was about to off er to Bro . ' Potter-Kirby was in recognition of his efficient services in the ordinary duties of Treasurer , and especially in connection with the extension scheme , which had cost over

£ 1000 , of which one-half had been paid off in the first year . It was also a cordial appreciation by the brethren of the estimable personal qualities of Bro . Potter-Kirby , as was testified by the large number of brethren that had contributed . The jewel was a gold Past Master's jewel , supported by the cross-keys , as emblem of his office , and bore a suitable inscription . The W . M . 's remarks were warmly supported by Bros . Ai Jones , P . P . G . T ., and Laughton , I . P . M ., and cordially applauded by the brethren .

Bro . Potter-Kirby said he was completely taken by surprise , and much touched by the unexpected kindness of his brethren . He suitably thanked them for the gift , and assured them that he would always do his utmost for the welfare of the lodge . Before the lodge was closed the Treasurer called attention to the condition of the banner of the Ancient Grand Lodge of AH England , held at York , and a Committee was appointed to have it restored and placed in a suitable cabinet .

After the lodge was closed the brethren ad ; ourned for refreshment , when the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and the health of the newly-initiated Bro . the Rev . J . H . Hastings , was most cordially received , and a numb ; r of songs enjoyed , under the accompaniment of Bro . Watson Hirst , the Organist to the lodge .

"The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , Captain Genera ! and Colonel of the Honourable Artillery Company , " was followed by "The M . W . Pro G . M ., the Eirl Amherst ; the Dep . G . M ., the Earl of Warwick ; and the rest of the Grand O . ficers , Present and Past . " Bro . Adams , Trcis ., replying for the latter , slid it seem ; d t > him that the Graid Officers had nothing to do but make speeches , It only remained for him to thank the brethren , on behalf of the Grand Orficers and himself , for their reception of the toast .

The I . P . M . gave "The Health nf the W . M ., " and said the W . M . did his work that evening in lodge in a very creditable manner . The best wish he could offer him was that he should have plenty of work , and thus obtain good practice . The W . M . replied . He thanked the brethren for the honour accorded to him . It was his purpose , to the utmost of his power , to maintain the dignity of the lodge . All he could say was to again think the brethren for their kindness .

In giving " The Initiate , " the W . M . said he felt assured that their new brother was a good man by his vouchers . Bro . Prof . Driver recited his well-know ; i poem " The Craft . " The initiate replied . He said , in a v : ry naif manner , that he felt much happ ier now than he did two hours ago . " The Visitors " was next given .

Bro . Charles Lewis replied . He said it was a great pleasure to him to meet hisold friend Bro . Humphries in the chair of W .
