Oiving to absence , the investiture of Bros . E . Nice , J . W ., and A . W . Deacon , S . D ., was postponed . A satisfactory audit report was adopted , and lodge was closed . After an excellent banquet the usual toasts were heartily given .

Bro . W . E . Lane , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . Master . " It was 15 years since Bro . Badderly was initiated , and he had gone through the different offices and given satisfaction to every Master who had ruled over him . Having now arrived at the chair , Bro . Badderly could be relied upon to give the same satisfaction as W . M . as he had given as an officer , if the members would only afford him the opportunity of showing his proficiency in the working . They knew him as a worker , and therefore hoped he would have ample opportunities of showing his ability . To ensure a successful vear the W . M . could rely upon the support of his officers and brethren .

Bro . E . J . Badderly , W . M ., thanked them for the kind way in which they had received his toast . It was true he was initiated 15 years ago by Bro . Coulthard , their esteemed Treasurer , and since that time he had met with such genuine kindness and support that he could hardly find words to adequately thank them . Every brother who joined Freemasonry aspired to the important position of W . M . of his lodge . He had gained that position after going through the different offices , and if he had given them satisfaction in the work he had done he hoped to continue to do so in the year to come .

He only hoped the Great Architect would give him health to carry out his duties , for 12 months ago , owing to ill-health , he never thought to attain the chair . He trusted to be spared to them for many years to continue his support to the lodge as a Past Master . The brethren would remember that to make his year successful they must support him with good initiates to fill the gaps caused by those _ who fell out of the ranks . There would be a ladies' night in connection with the lodge in January , and he hoped it would be as successful as in the past . He would propose the next toast , which was " The

I . P . M . " Bro . Lane , I . P . M ., had _ given them intense gratification during the past jear by the way in which he had carried out his duties , and it had been one of the most successful years their lodge had had . In presenting the I . P . M . with the jewel he had so well earned they hoped he would be spared for many years to wear it . Bro . W . E . Lane , I . P . M ., acknowledged the kind remarks of the W . M ., and thanked the officers and members for their support during the past year . It had been an extremely pleasant year , and he left the chair with a certain amount of regret . He

rejoiced , however , at having such a worth y successor in the W . M . He thanked them for the beautiful jewel , which quite repaid him for any trouble or work he had had . For "The Visitors" Bros . Browning , Holland , Livingstone , Tull , and Lawson replied . The W . M . next proposed "The Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary , " and said that all the Past Masters had rendered good service to the lodge . Bro . Coulthard , P . M ., Treas ., ably looked after the finances of the lodge , and Bro . Smith , P . M ., was a most exemplary Secretary , who performed his duties in such a genuine manner that

every Master was encouraged to re-appoint him . Bros . Bignold , P . M . ; Lane , I . P . M . ; Pugh , P . M . ; and Coulthard , P . M ., Treas ., responded * Bro . W . T . Smith , P . M ., Sec , also replied , assuring the brethren that the finances were in a good condition and would be improved a year hence . "The Officers " concluded the progiamme .

Bro . J . Leigh , Org ., directed the musical arrangements , which proved attractive and enjoyable . Miss Lillian Mayes contributed a couple of songs in a very pleasing manner and in excellent style , and Bro . Field and Mr . Bertram Pearce also assisted with well rendered songs . The humorous element was well sustained by Bro . Arthur Melrose , who was heartily encored for his clever whistling songs . Bro . T . F . Noakes proved a most efficient accompanist .

In order to show him their deep-felt regard and esteem , and as a smill token of gratitude for the vatuible services he hid rendered to the lodge in particular , and to the Craft in general , Bro . Oppenheim , on behalf of the brethren , presented him with an illuminated address , executed in a highly artistic manner by the well-known painter , Bro . Faustin . Bro . Bue , who was evidently moved , in returning thanks for the unexpected gift , said he was glad to state that in La

France Lodge they knew how to keep a secret . A vote of thanks was accorded to Bro . J . Oppenheim , who is already in possession of the Past Master's jewel , for the excellent manner in which he had conducted labour and refreshments during the second occasion on which he had been in the chair of K . S ., as well as for the impressive style he carried out the proceedings of the evening . Having re-elected a former member of the lodge , Bro . Jules Rolez , and decided to grant various sums to Charities , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting-room .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were submitted from the chair , and duly honoured . Bro . Smithers , A . G . D . C , replied to the toast of " The Grand Officers , Present and Past . "

Bros . Ribbons , Lamigeon , and Duchd responded on behalf of "The Visitors . " During the evening an excellent musical entertainment was provided , apd fully came up to the high standard for which this lodge is noted . The programme included Miss Marie Berchili—daughter ot Bro . Berchili ( Mizpah)—a very gifted soprano ; Mile . Jeanne Laurent , in some interesting French recitations ; a harmonious instrumental quattuor , composed of M . Hervrne ; ( violin ) , M . Maunheim ( 'cello ) , Mr . H . Wilson ( piano ) , and Mr . J . Roger ( organ ) .

The companions retired to an excellent supper , supplied by Mrs . Venables , the proprietress , and sue erintended by her in her usual very capable manner . The cloth removed , the M . E . Z . presented the usual loyal and R . A . toasts in his customary graceful manner , remarking of her Majesty that she had endeared herself to the hearts of all her subjects ; andalsoof H . R . H . the M . E . G . Z ., that he performed his

multifarious duties most nobly , and was ever ready to assist his illustrious mother in the various func'ions that she had to perform . The toasts were accepted right royally . That of "The Pro G . Z ., G . H ., G . J ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past" also received at the hands of the M . E . Z . that meed of praise it so richly deserves

. The toast of "The M . E . Z . " was presented by Comp . J . Loader , P . Z ., Treas ., who said he was only re-echoing the voice of all present and it gave him great pleasure in doing so . Comp . T . R . Cass , M . E . Z ., had endeared himself to them all and had carried out the duties of the First Principal ' s chair in an exemplary manner and with much geniality . The M . E . Z . would leave that chair with their fervent hope , that for many years he might be spared to render that able assistance he had done in the past and remain an ornament in the Rose Chapter .

The M . E . Z ., who was received in a most cordial manner , replied that he thanked his old and esteemed Comp . J . Loader for his kind and generous remarks , and also for the manner the companions had received them . He was certainly much attached to the Rose Chapter , his mother chapter , from the time of its consecration , and had found among its members some of his most esteemed friends . He very kindly alluded to the late Comp . H . Martin , P . Z ., one of the oldest Past Principals , through whom he was introduced to the chapter , which had from its inception been carried on in an

able manner , and so long as that continued and under such able guidance it must succeed . He had done his very best in the chapter , and most heartily thanked the companions for their generosity which had been evinced through the whole of the year . The toast of " The Visitors " was presented by the M . E . Z . in terms of appreciation and cordiality , and duly responded to by Comps . Cureton , Swinford Smith , Cornford , and Stone , each accepting the kind remarks of the M . E . Z ., and also the reception given to them by the companions . It was their sincere desire to have the privilege extended them again , which they should only be too pleased to accept .

The M . E . Z ., Comp . T . R . Cass , next presented the toast of "The H . and J ., " and remarked of Comp . G . H . Lewis , the At . E . Z . elect , that they were exalted together in that chapter , but that Comp . Lewis had most worthily filled and had passed the chair in another chapter , and he was confident the companions could not have elected a more worthy companion , or one who could more ably carry out the duties of M .
