The Registrar-General's returns for the past week shows that the death rate in the 33 large towns in England and Wales was 17 . 2 per looo . In London it was at the rate of 15 . 1 per 1000 , while in Croydon it was even more favourable still , being at the rate of S . 4 per 1000 .
The Duke of York arrived at Homburg early in the week on a visit to the Empress Frederick of Germany , who has since left with her daughter the Princess Victoria of Prussia for a few weeks' sojourn in the Southern Tyrol , after which her Majesty will visit the Oueen at Balmoral .
