After the banquet , the Worshipful Master proposed the usual toast of "TheOueen , " which was duly honoured , as was that of " The Grand Officers . " "The Health of the Prov . Grand Officers" vvas responded to by Bros . H . G . E . Green , P . G . Sec , and C . L .

Mason , P . G . Treas ., the latter remarking that many matters of great importance at present required the attention of the Provincial Grand Lodge ; but the brethren might rest assured that they all received that careful attention due to such weighty matters . Bro . Tyers , I . P . M ., proposed "The Masonic Charities , " and observed that in that district the brethren had done

their duty vvith regard to the Chanties , having secured the election to the Schools of three girls and one boy , and he was sure that as they had done in the past so would they do in the future . Bro . Smithson , P . M ., as Chairman of the Local Charity Committee , responded , and thanked the brethren for giving the toast a prominent position in the list , and also for the

opportunity given him of making a few remarks on their behalf . In the Boys' School there vvere at present receiving an excellent education 250 boys , 17 of whom vvere sent from the West Yorkshire district . The last reports received as to the conduct and progress of those boys from the Head Master were of a highly satisfactory nature , and one boy , Geo . Wilson , was doing very well . Out of the

235 girls educated at the Girls' School there were 20 from that district , and they vvere also reported on very satisfactorily . As regards the Benevolent Fund , no less than 400 vvere in receipt of annuities , 190 males—one of who , Bro . Blackburn , was in the room—and the remainder females . He trusted that Bro . Blackburn would live long to enjoy the benefits derived from the Fund . Bro .

Smithson then quoted statistics to prove that although the amount sent up from the district to the different funds was a large one , yet the brethren received back more than their fair share of the benefits , and this fact should be an incentive to them to increased efforts . Their next list would be a very heavy one , containing as it would two boys , three girls , one male , and four widows as candidates for election ,

but he doubted whether they could command sufficient votes to ensure the election of even one widow , and he therefore heartily congratulated the lodge on the announcement that no less than seven of the brethren had decided to go up as Stewards . Bro . Tyers , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of _ the W . M ., Bro . Flockton , " whom he characterised as a

straightforward , honest , and hard working Mason . For 12 years Bro . Flockton had consistently performed his duty to the Iodge , and he was only re-echoing the sentiments of every brother present in wishing him a very happy and prosperous year . The toast vvas received vvith acclamation , and the W . M . responded in a neat little speech , in vvhich he

said his aim had always been as a Mason to be true to the great principles on vvhich trie Order vvas founded . With regard to the number of members in the lodge , he much preferred a few good and worthy brethren to a large number . He cordially reciprocated their good wishes for a happy , prosperous , and peaceful year , and would conclude with the words of the Masonic hymn : —

" May freedom , harmony , and love Unite us in the grand design , Beneath the omniscient eye above , The glorious Architect Divine . " The W . M . then proposed the health of " The I . P . M ., Bro . Tyers , " who suitably responded , and the W . Master of the other Leeds lodges , to which Bros . Scarth , W . M .

Fidelity Lodge ; Myers , W . M . Philanthropic Lodge ; Binns , W . M . Alfred Lodge ; R . Harris , W . M . Defence Lodge ; C L . Mason , W . M . Prudence Lodge ; and A . W . Youings , W . M . Goderich Lodge , all responded . Bro . Thompson , P . M . proposed "The Visiting Brethren , " coupling vvith the toast the names of Bro . Tudor Trevor , S . W . Prudence Lodge , as representing the Leeds lodges , and Bro . Maynard , representing the London Lodges .

The remaining toasts , vvhich vvere those of "The Past Master of the Lodge , " proposed by Bro . Thorp , Sec , "The Officers of the Lodge , " by the W . M ., and the Tyler ' s toast , vvere duly honoured . During the proceedings the singing of Bros . Blagbro and Higgins vvas highly appreciated . Bros . Carbert , Thompson , Cockerlyne , Austin , Cox , and Meech , also kindly assisted with songs , and Bros . Brean and Rickard with recitations .

BATTLE . —Abbey Lodge ( No . 1184 ) . —The regular monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 16 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall . The W . M ., Bro . W . Youinge , W . M . 1211 J E . Crosby , I . P . M . 1042 j and others . Subsequently about 70 brethren sat down to the installation banquet , vvhich vvas also intended to celebrate the Festival of St . John . The usual Masonic toasts vvere given by the VV . M . in brief , but telling , speeches , and duly honoured .

Bro . Makinson , P . P . G . Chap ., responded on behalf of "The P . G . Officers , " and in doing so referred to the small amount of support given to the Craft by the clergy of Leeds . He never lost an opportunity of impressing upon his brother clergy that in undertaking the duties of Chaplain to a Masonic lodge they would be encouraging an Institution which was one of the most charitable in existence . It

always gave him great pleasure to attend the various Masonic meetings and banquets , and while he could state that he never saw anything in the proceedings which the most fastidious clergyman could object to , he could also state that he never in any way acted as a " wet blanket . " Bro . Mason , P . G . T ., also responded , and alluded to the vexed question as to the propriety of Past Masters wearing

their collars when visiting other lodges . There was a probability of this question being finally settled at the next P . G . Lodge meeting . With respect to the clergy , he heartily agreed vvith the remarks of the last speaker on this question , and strongly recommended any of the clergy who had doubts on the matter to read the eloquent speech of the

Dean of York , delivered a few weeks ago , which was so convincing that he would like to see it printed and circulated . The question as to the best mode of celebrating the Queen ' s Jubilee vvas agitating the minds of a good many Masons at the present time , and he trusted that the efforts in this direction would not be left to each lodge to decide , but that one grand effort would be made by the whole

Body . Bro . Lees , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of their Newly-Installed W . M ., " which toast was most enthusiastically received , and

Craft Masonry.

Bro . Harris , on rising to respond , received an ovation . He was much touched by the reception he had met with , and ventured to hope that he might take it as an indication of a happy and prosperous year for the Iodge . His thanks were due to the large number of visitors , including the W . M . ' s of most of the Leeds lodges , as well as visitors from all parts of the kingdom who had honoured him by

their presence . During his year of office he hoped to be able to induce every member to take an active interest in lodge , especially those vvho had been hindered by their natural modesty or bashfulness from doing so hitherto . The Worshipful Master then gave the toast of "The Worshipful Masters , of the Leeds Lodges , and Visiting Brethren , " which vvas responded to by Bros . Scarth , W . M .

289 ,- Myers , VV . M . 304 j Binns , W . M . 306 j Youinge , 1211 j Crosby , I . P . M . 1042 j and Meech , 1612 , as representing the London lodges . The remaining toasts were "The Installing Master , Bro . Kingston , " "The Officers of the Lodge , " "The Past Masters , " " The Ladies , " responded to by Bros . Marsh and Eaglesfield , and the Tyler ' s toast . The arrangements , both for the installation ceremony

and the banquet , reflected great credit on those who organised them . During the evening choice selections of music vvere given by Bros . Simpson , Wilkinson , Cockerlyne , J . H . Wilkinson , Brownfoot , Brean , Meech , and Whitehead , the last named playing several violin solos which vvere much appreciated . Bro . Brean also gave one of his popular recitations .
