It had the following inscription engraved thereon .- — " Presented to the Worshipful , John Lamb , Esq , Mayor of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme , by * the Town Council aud the Officers , on the occasion of his laying the Eoundation-stone of the Borough Covered Market , 13 th October , 1853 .
