CRAFT : METROPOLITAN

BISHOPSGATE LODGE , No . 2396 . rriHIS Lodge , which is now in the sixth year of its age , opened its winter I season on Monday evening , at the Great Eastern Hotel , says the " City Press , " under the presidency of the Worshipful Master Brother David A . B . omain . The Lodge first dealt with some formal business , over which it spent some time , and afterwards the W . M . initiated Mr . Henry Samuel Solomon , and subsequently passed to the second degree Bro . Lionel Lemon .

Bro . 0 . Thomas , CO ., the Senior Warden of the Lodge , having sent a letter wishing to withdraw from his official position in theLodge , on account of the many other positions he holds , it was resolved that the Treasurer , the W . M ., and Past Master H . Clarke , CO ., should form a deputation to wait upon him to persuade him to reconsider his determination , and to remain S . W . of the Lodge .

In the names of the Treasurer and Past Master H . Clarke it was later on resolved to place in the Post Office Savings Bank the Benevolent Fund of the Lodge . Some propositions for adding to the Lodge membership were then given in , and the Brethren , after assisting the Master to close the Lodge , adjourned to a banquet .

The usual toasts followed , and Bro . Samuel Jacobs Immediate Past Master , in proposing the health of the Worshipful Master , stated that Bro . Remain was the first initiate the Lodge had five years ago , and he had gone through all the offices , while , as the Brethren had seen , he had performed the duties of Master that evening in a manner the Lodge had reason to be proud of .

Bro . D . A . Romam , in responding to the toast , which was heartily received , said it was a very great compliment to have a toast proposed as Bro . Jacobs had proposed it , because their friend always spoke from his heart what he felt . He had said he was the first initiate of the Lodge , and that he had attained to the position of the Lodge ' s highest Officer . He might inform the Brethren -that when he first became a member of the Lodge he resolved to bend his inclinations so as to reach the chair ultimately . He had attained

that high position , which was a very proud position . He could honestly say he had not missed a single meeting of the Lodge since he was initiated . He would wish to impress upon all the young members of the Lodge the importance of a regular attendance at their mother Lodge ; it was of more importance than a regular atttendanco at a Lodge of Instruction , because by attending the meetings of the Lodge , members became acquainted with the Lodge ' s particular working . He hoped the Brethren would remember that and act upon it .

At a later period Bro . Romam proposed the Initiate , and Bro . Solomon responded . Bro . Samuel Jacobs I . P . M ., in replying to the toast of the Past Masters referred to the fact that his year of office had been the most successful since the Lodge was founded . He had had ten initiates , he raised four Brethren in one evening ( which the Brethren might imagine was no light task ) , and he left at the end of his year a balance of £ 16 .

Bro . Henry Clarke , CO ., P . M . also replied , and , after observing that the happiest days of his life had been passed in Freemasons' Lodges , congratulated tbe Worshipful Master on the way he had performed his duties , adding that he had never seen so young a Master perform the ceremonies so well and fluently . .

The toasts of the Visitois aud the Officers followed . The proceedings of the evening were enlivened by capital recitations by Bro . Bilby , and some singing by Bros . Simmons , Milton Smith , G . I . Beverley , J . L . Henson and A . E . Pridmore , CO ., under the direction of Bro . Dr . James F . Haskins Provincial Grand Organist Herts Past Prov . Grand Organist Essex Organist of the Lodge .
