Consecration Of Lodge Montefiore, No. 753.

CONSECRATION OF LODGE MONTEFIORE , No . 753 .

AN interesting Masonic ceremonial took place on the 9 th instant , in the Sfc . John ' s Lodge , Buchanan-street , Glasgow , when Lodge Montefiore , No . 753 , the firsfc Jewish Lodge in Scotland , waa solemnly erected and consecrated by a doputation of Provincial Grand Lodge , accompanied by Bro . Lyon , Grand Secretary . The Provincial Grand Lodge having been duly opened to the third

degree , the ceremony of erection and consecration was carried through wifch grand honours , and at its close Brother Simons , the firsfc R . W . M . of Lodge Montefiore , took his seat beside fche S . P . G . Master amid applause . In fche course of tho proceedings the Grand Chaplain ( Rev . W . W . Tulloch ) delivered a brief address , specially

appropiafce to the occasion . He reminded the brethren that the name of the new Lodge recalled that of Sir Moses Mmtefiore , the first Jew over knighted by a British sovereign . Sir Moses was a striking example of a man who had brought lasting renown to himself ; while by his beneficent activity , by the nnceasing and brotherly

devotion wifch which he laboured for his race , it was chiefly through his exertions that the Jewish disabilities were removed , and thafc his nephew , Baron Rothschild , was the first Jew who sat in our Parliament . Thafc was fche beginning of a long series of successful endeavours on behalf of his brethren to break their bonds and to help

them in their poverty and distress . Was it too much to hope that the Lodge Montefiore , animated by his spirit and inspired by his example , would be conspicuous among the Lodges of the province and of Scotland for its philanthropy and its beneficence . The R . W . M . and Office-bearers of Lodgo Montefiore were afterwards duly installed

and R . W . M . Simons having taken the chair , was suitably addressed by S . P . G . Master Graham . In addressing the brethren in reply , Right Worshipfnl Master Simons said the Lodge Montefiore was , as they all knew , nnder Jewish auspices . Thafc was a comprehensive term . He rejoiced to think that a Lodge so

constituted could be nothing less than a Lodge conducted in accordance with the highest and besfc principles of Masonry . In fche sister kingdom there were numerous Lodges under Jewish auspices , and they were pleased fco know that these Lodges were for the most parfc presided over by Masters who were not of the Jewish persnasion .

They must therefore rest assured thafc there was nothing in thoso tenets of Judaism so touchingly referee ! to by Bro . Tulloch which wero in any way inimical to tho highest ancl most sacred professions of Masonry or the highest duties of citizenship . There was nothing to prevent them extending the right hand of fellowship in all truth

to those who recognised , as they did , the supreme authority of tho Great Architect of the Universe . Bro . Lyon , Grand Secretary , afterwards briefly addressed the brethren , and expressed the

pleasure it afforded him to attend on so interesting an occasion . R . W . M . Simons afterwards invited all tha brethren present to partake of supper afc his residence , in Bath-streefc , whence they proceeded after the Lodge had been closed in the usual manner .

THIS Lodge celebrated its 126 th anniversary on Friday , 23 rd insfc . ( the Charter was granted on 16 th March 1762 ) , in the Langham Hotel , Glasgow . Dancing commenced at eight o'clock , Bro . James Booth P . M . and Treasurer discharging the duties of M . C . Supper was served shortly after nine o'clock , the chair being occupied by Bros . Wm . Kean R . W . M ., Bros . Wm . Morgan S . W ., David Russell

and John Fraser acting as croupiers . Dnring the evening songs were rendered by Mrs . Fraser and Mrs . Paterson , and a humorous reading by Mr . W . Buchanan . A pleasing feature of fche evening was an entertainment by Bro . J . C . Macdonald , Miss Maud Brace , and Mr . D . Lally , who travelled from Dumbarton specially fco be present .

In St . Andrew ' s Established Church , Dundee , on Sunday

last , the Rev . D . G . Manuel , B . D ., preached the annual sermon to the members of the Masonic Lodges in the city . The brethren met in the Royal Arch Lodge Hall , Parliament Close , from which they walked in procession

to the church . The rev . Gentleman took for his text 1 Corinthians i . 11 .

A CONVOCATION of this Encampment was held at the Huyshe Masonic Temple , Plymouth , on Friday , 23 rd instant , when thero was a goodly attendance of Praters , including Sir Knight F . B . Westlake P . E . C . P . P . G . T ., who officiated as the M . E . P . Comps . J . R . Lord P . Z . 70 , and Henry Rogers J . 1099 , were then installed as Sir Knights . Sir Knight E . ON the 13 th instant the annual meeting was held , in Freemasons ' Hall , Sfc . Saviourgate , York , when the Conclave was opened by E . Fra . Cowper Preceptor . After some preliminary business fche chair was taken by E . Fra . Whytehead , who proceeded to instal the E . P . elect , Fra . Brown , after which the outgoing Preceptor invested E . Fra . Brown wifch fche two honorary jewels presented by

fche American Pilgrims in 1876 and 1887 . The Officers were appointed , as follow : —Fras Seller Constable , Major McGachen Marshal , Whytehead P . Registrar , Dyson Sub-Marshal , Williamson 1 st Herald , Harris 2 nd Herald , Cockrane Standard Bearer , and others . A number of apologies from absent fratres were read . The

report of the auditors showed a small deficiency , which , considering fche abnormally heavy expenses of the year , was regarded as a matter for congratulation . The alms were collected and fche Conclave dissolved , after whioh the E . P . presided afc dinner , supported by his Fratres .
