WEST LANCASHIRE .

IHnHE annual meeting of this important Provincial Grand dL Lodge was held in the Theatre of the Winter Gardens , Morecambe , on Wednesday , 27 th inst , the chief of the Province Bro . the Earl of Lathom presiding , supported by his Deputy

Bro . Robert Wylie P . G . D ., other Officers of Grand Lodge , and a very large assembly of Officers and other members of the Province , the attendance numbering about one thousand Brethren .

On the roll of the Province being called it was found that only two of the whole number of Lodges comprising it—125—were unrepresented . The Provincial Grand Secretary , in his annual report , said it could not be otherwise than gratifying that the first year

of his lordship ' s rule as Provincial Grand Master had been marked by a continuance of the prosperity and success which in so eminent a degree characterised the beneficent rule of his late father . During the year two new Lodges had been added to the roll , namely , Fylde , No . 2758 , of which his lordship was

the first Master , and Southport Temperance , No . 2815 . Warrants had also been granted for a new Lodge at Aintree , No . 2814 , and a fourth Lodge to meet at Widnes . The number of candidates initiated during the year was . 776 , and the roll of members was greater than at any previous time in the annals

of the Province . The income during the year was £ 1 , 072 , and the ordinary expenditure £ 658 leaving available £ 400 , which had been devoted to benevolence , in shape of grants to widows and aged Brethren , to the Preston Royal Infirmary , and the West Lancashire Masonic Institutions . The fund raised to

perpetuate the memory of the late Lord Lathom had realised oyer £ 3 , 000 , which would' ^ hortly be allocated to the benevolent Institutions of West Lancashire . ¦ . . The Earl of Lathom , in commenting on the report , said he rejoiced that the Provincial Grand Lodge was so prosperous .

He assured the Brethren he should never forget the reception which they gave him last year . During the past twelve months they' had made what he could only describe as a magnificent gift to charity , in subscribing over £ 3 , 000 to the memory of his dear , father .. , He thanked them from the bottom of his heart

for that gift , which he felt would keep green the memory of pne who he knew was beloved by them all . Referring to the increase of four Lodges in the Province , his lordship remarked that their numbers were increasing , he might say , almost daily , and as they were a great Province it behoved them to be

careful . whom they admitted to Masonry . The jf rovince did not want one single initiate into Masonry for the sake of his sub ^ scription . Each candidate could only be acceptable if he was a good man and true , and therefore likely to make a good Mason . Proceeding , his lordship reminded the Brethren that

his father received during his lifetime a number of presentation mauls in connection with the Masonic , laying of foundation stones , and it had occurred to him that instead of allowing them

all to remain idle at Lathom House he would like to present the one he thought most suitable for the purpose to the Provincial Grand Lodge for the use of the Provincial Grand Master , whoever he might be .

Bro . R . Wylie moved that the handsome gift ( an ivory maul ) be received with great pleasure , and that the thanks of the Provincial Grand Lodge be tendered to his lordship . Bro . Captain Garnett Grand Deacon of England seconded the motion , which was carried by acclamation .

As Provincial Grand Treasurer , Bro . Thomas Edwards P . M . 1380 , Skelmersdale , was elected by a large majority ; Bro . E . Kite P . M . 833 , Everton , also a candidate , withdrawing on the show of hands . Bros . J . Piatt , J . J . Lambert , T . Callow , G . A . Harradon , and R . P . White were elected as the Auditors .

On the motion of Bro . R . Wylie , seconded by Bro . John Moulding , 225 guineas was voted , as under : —50 guineas to the fund for the relief of Masons in South Africa , 50 guineas to the Indian Famine Fund , 50 guineas to the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , 50 guineas to the Alpass

Institution , and 25 guineas to the Hamer Institution . Bro . ] . W . Burgess stated that £ 4 , 000 had been placed in the hands of the Grand Master of Capetown for the relief of Masons in distress through the war . The Provincial Grand Master added

that he should send the contribution to the Indian Famine Fund direct to the Viceroy of India ( Lord Curzon ) , who , as a politician , had had some connection with West Lancashire , and therefore would be able the more highly to appreciate the gift ,

ISLE OF MAN .

THE first meeting of this Provincial Grand Lodge under Lord Henniker ' s regime was held on Tuesday , 19 th inst , when -nearly a hundred Brethren put in an appearance . The ceremony was performed by the Rev . C . J . Martyn Past

Grand Chaplain , Lord Henniker ' s Deputy in Suffolk , and one of the Queen ' s chaplains , and right worthily he performed the task , affording members of the Order a treat which many of them would have the opportunity of enjoying for the first time . . -

After the ceremony of Installation Lord Henniker appointed and invested his Officers , and after the investiture the members formed in procession and marched to St . Thomas ' Church to hear a sermon by the Rev . S . A . Newton , oil Ramsey .

At the conclusion of the Church service the Brethren returned to the Lodge room , and transacted a large amount of formal and important business , some of which had accumulated owing to the length of time elapsing since the last Provincial Grand Lodge meeting .

In the evening there was a dinner at Castle Mdna , at which most of the members sat down . During the dinner the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and responded to , the new Provincial Grand Master and the Installing Master enlivening the proceedings with several interesting and amusing speeches on Masonic affairs .

The annual supper of the Holloway Instruction Lodge ; No . 2601 , the usual meetings of which are held at the Osborne Tavern , Stroud Green . Road , will be held at that establishment on Friday next , 6 th July . # « *

Joining fees are prohibited by one of the Grand Lodges of the United States , and it would be interesting to know what effect a similar course would have on our own Lodges . We think a Brother of good repute might well be accepted as a member of a Lodge on payment of the current subscription ,

having passed the ballot , without the exaction of a fine or " fee " for entering the Lodge , but of course there , is much to be said for and against such an arrangement , particularly as so many of our Lodges have to make finance a prominent feature in their calculations . :
