LADIES BANQUET AND CONCERT . A VERY successful function' was that promoted by the members of this Lodge ; it proved to be a most interesting meeting , and a credit to all who were responsible for the arrangements , and they must have been greatly gratified at the result of their endeavours .

The meeting was postponed from January on account of the death of the late Queen , and took place on Friday , 22 nd inst ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street : After a pleasant little chat with the ladies , Bro . F . P . Weinjl , as their President and Preceptor of the Lodge , with his wife , lead the way . to the banqueting room , which presented a beautiful spectacle .

An excellent dinner was greatly enjoyed by the company , and after ample justice had been done to the repast Bro . Weinel in eloquent terms proposed the toast of the King and the Craft . The King , he said , was one of the noblest , and one of the brightest in the Craft . He held the position of Most Worshipful Grand Master for twenty-six

years , and was now the Protector of English 1 reemasonry . That the Great Architect of the Universe might give him health and strength to reign over them for many many years to come was their ardent wish . Miss Bessie Spells slang God save the King in grand style , the company most heartily joining in the Anthem .

The toast of the Most Worshipful Grand Master-elect H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught and the Grand Officers present and past was next honoured . The President said he was sure H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught would follow the noble example of his brother . Comparatively speaking he was a voung man , but not a voung Mason . He had done a great deal for the welfare of the Craft ; he had worked hard without reward or fee , and they trusted God might grant him long life , health , and strength in his high Office . '

Bro . Bull P . M . proposed the toast of the . President Bro . Weinel , and prosperity to the Metropolitan Lodge of Instruction . He said the Lodge had rendered great services in the past . Bro . Weinel the Preceptor did everything in his power to make the Lodge a great success ; he was always ready and willing to assist those Brethren who were anxious to learn the beautiful ritual of Freemasonry . Brother

Weinel had been the Preceptor for nine or ten years , and during that time the Lodge had greatly improved and the members under him had made rapid progress ; there would be great difficulty to find a better Preceptor . He proposed the health of Bro . Weinel , and prosperity to the Metropolitan Lodge of Instruction . The toast was honoured and duly acknowledged .

Bro . Witt P . M . Secretary rose and said he had now the pleasure of giving a toast—a particularly easy one to propose , as it was one on which he could say nice things .. It was the toast of the Ladies , and in the name of the Metropolitan Lodge he gave them a most hearty welcome . He was delighted to see the Ladies were enjoying themselves . It wias the first attempt of the Lodge to have a Ladies

gathering , but now he could say in confidence it would not be the last . Considering the Lodge took the husbands , brothers , and sweethearts away to attend its meetings it was necessary they should do something to keep in the good graces of the Ladies , otherwise they might get into a little trouble . He called on the Brethren and gentlemen to drink the health of the Ladies , which was heartily clone . Mr . Jack Webb , in a very humorous speech , responded on behalf of the Ladies ,

Metropolitan: Instruction.

Bro . J . D . Webb P . M . gave the toast of the visitors , and said the motto of the Craft was to be happy and communicate happiness to everyone . He could not tell them all the secrets they had , but he might mention one—that it was always a pleasure to them to see visitors . They hoped the guests were enjoying themselves , and that thev might have the pleasure of seeing them all on a future occasion . He had much pleasure in calling upon Mr . H . J . Chilton to reply .

That gentleman said he was asked to respond to the toast just ably proposed by Mr . Webb , but really on looking round he saw quite a number of gentlemen whom he was sure were more competent than he was , therefore he must claim their kind indulgence . He was quite certain that if all Masonic reunions or banquets were as pleasant , enjoyable , and convivial as that had been that night then he—and he spoke personally—should look forward with pleasurable anticipation to the time when he was initiated into the Craft . All he could add

was that he was sure everv visitor that evening would join with him in expressing sincere thanks for the hearty way in which they had been received . The toast of the Treasurer and Secretary was next given by the worthy Chairman .

Bro . J . D . Webb P . M . Treasurer thanked Bro . Weinel for his kind remarks , and the Brethren for receiving the toast in such a cordial manner . As Treasurer he had very little to do , but the Secretary plenty . The Preceptor and Secretary were very much alive , and were hard working M'asons ; they did everything in their power for the welfare of the Lodge . He assured the Brethren that whatever he could personally do in the interests of the Lodge he should at all times be most happy to fulfil .

Bro . Witt P . M . Secretary said he had officiated as Secretary for over two years , and was not dead yet . Their labour was a labour of love and if the Brethren wished to enjoy a Masonic treat he advised them to pay the Metropolitan Lodge a visit . It . was held on Friday evenings , at the Mail Coach , 60 Farringdon Street , where Brethren would highly appreciate the excellent working of Bro . Weinel . When they met they did so for a good cause and mutual improvement .

Bro . Snelling P . M . late Secretary to the Lodge , said he had been Secretary for twenty years , and should now be a regular attendant if he resided in London , but he was living out of town , and after so man } ' years he wanted a little rest . Theirs was an entertainment for the good of Freemasom- }' , and if the husbands came a little late home in the idea of their better halves , the ladies must recognise they were working for the welfare of the Craft .

Bro . Waldvogel gave the toast of the Vice Presidents Bro . A . B . Clayton W . M .-elect 16 S 6 , and Bro . G . Knight W . M . 1828 , and the compliment was acknowledged by those Brethren . Some excellent songs were rendered by Miss Bessie Spells , Miss

Alison Rye , Mr . A . Fowler , Bro . Wilfred Stracey , Mr , Charles Morton , Bro . H . Hudson ( who gave 'as a humorous sketch " Kissing Cup's race , " whilst sneezing ) . Several artistes -were deservedly encored . Mr . V . R . Taylor officiated at the piano , Bro . W . Stracey being the musical director .

Altogether the gathering was a notable and successful Festival , one of the most enjoyable it has been our pleasure to take part in for some time past . Amongst the company present-were Bro . and Mrs . F . P . Weinel , Bro . and Mrs . J . D . Webb , Bro . and Mrs . W . R . Witt , Bro . and Mrs . G . Knights , Bro . and Miss A . B . Clavton , Mr . and Mrs . Chilton , Bros . Snelling , Clark , Bachhoffner , Erg . and Mrs , Bull , Bro , and Mrs ,.
