NOTICES OF MEETINGS .

Evening Star Lodge , No . 1719 . —The regular meeting of this Lodge was held nt Freemasons' Hall , on Tuesday , tho 25 th inst ., when thero wero present numerous brethren and visitors . This Lodge is appropriately named , for only thoso gentlemen or brethren who are connected with gas engineering aro eligiblo to bo received into it as initiates or joining members . Thus it is a class Lodge , and

though it may seem at first sight contrary to the spirit of Freemasonry to restrict tho range of choice to only a single section of tho community , we aro pleased to note that , in its brief career , tho Evening Star has gone on most prosperously , and it is moro than probable that there are few Lodges in which the relations of the members towards each other are distinguished by snob marked cordiality ,

or whero it is no mere stereotyped expression to say whenever the Lodgo meets , that complete harmony prevails throughout tho proceedings . The mere fact of all tho brethren belonging to ifc following or being interested in , the same profession is tolerably certain to cause this happy consummation . At all events , onr exporienco of the " Evoning Star " is in keeping with what we havo jnst said , and

was fully exemplified by tho doings of Tuesday , when at tho timo appointed Bro . Dnff-Filor P . M . occupied tho chair cf K . S ., in the temporary absence of Bro . John Aird P . G . S . W . M ., who , however , came later on . There were also present , Bros . William Sugg S . W ., T . A . Greene J . W ., Magnns Ohren G . A . D . C . Secretary as S . D ., David Sngg J . D ., G . C . Roborts Organist 1023 . The Lodge having been opened , and tho minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , Bro . W . King was raised to tho degree of M . M ., and subsequently Bro . Hubert T . Bniley was passed to F . C .,

the acting Master fulfilling his duties most fluently and impressively . Tho next business was the eloction of W . M . and Treasnrer , and tho appointment of Tyler for tho ensuing year . In tho selection of a member to fill the chair of the Lodge , tho choice of the brethren fell on Bro . William Sugg , who , on the fact being announced , rose and returned thanks to all for the honour they had conferred

upon him , promising at tho same timo to uso his best endeavours to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors in office , and promoto the comfort and well-being of tho members . Brother James Glnisher was re-elected Treasurer , but , as ho was unfortunately absent in Cornwall , Bvo . Magnns Ohren undertook to convey to him tho pleasing

nnnonncement of the honour conferred upon him . Bro . Speight was re-appointed Tyler . A discussion then ensued on tho Bye-laws , and especially on the law respecting tho proposition of candidates for initiation or as joining members , in tho course of which Bro . Ohren drew ntttsntion to the Constitutions on the snbjeet , and interpreted tho Bye-laws in accordance with the ono and only sense tho Con

stitutions could be made to bear . Brother Aird , who had arrived in tho meantime , and taken his place ns W . M ., then rose and proposed a resolution , offering the congratulations of the Lodge to Bro . Ohren on his appointment to the rank of a Grand Officer , and also moved that the proposal be entered on tho minutes . This was seconded by Bro . Sugg , at whose suggestion a Committee was

nppointed with tho viow of taking steps to ascertain in what manner the Lodge conld more substantially endorse their opinion of tho gracefn ? act of the Grand Master in appointing Bro . Ohren to bo G . A . D . of C . It is needless to say that the motion was carried . As regards the purpose of tho Committee it was hinted—and we consider tho hint a good one —there conld not bo a better way of bearing testimony to Bro .

Ohren ' s general merits , and his especial services to the Evening Star Lodge , than by presenting him with a completo set of Grand Lodge clothing . Bvo . Dnff-Filer having given notice of motion with a view to presenting a Past Master ' s jewel to tho retiring Master in recognition of his able services dnring the past year , and other matters having been despatched , tho Lodge was closed and the

brethren adjourned to a banqnet , provided by Bro . A . Best , and superintended by Bro . E . Dawkins . Justice having been done to an excellent mem ; , the cloth was removed and the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given , Bro . Magnus Ohren replying , among others , to that of the Pro and Deputy G . Masters and the rest of tho Grand Officers past and present . Bro . Aird gracefully acknowledged the

toast of his health , while Bro . Sugg ' s election as W . M . for next year was noted and acknowledged by that brother in returning thanks for the toast of the Officers . Bro . H . E . Frances responded for the Visitors . The pleasures of the evening were greatly enhanced by tho excellent singing of Bros . E . Roberts , G . Bnckland , and Bliss Clara Perry . Bro . J . Stedman had charge of the musical

arrangements of the evening , and sang his favonrito song , "Mary of Argyle , " excellently well . ' Bro . Roborts so highly distinguished himself by his rendering of the song , "Big Ben , " as to elicit not only the warm approval of . all present , but also a voto of thanks , cordially moved by the W . M ., and as cordially accepted by the brethron . The Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings .

Friars Lodge of Instruction , No . 1349 . —The special meeting , for working sections only , was held at Bro . Pavitt ' s , Liverpool Arms , Canning Town , on Tuesday , the 25 th inst . Lodgo opened at 7 . 30 precisely , under the presidency of P . M . Musto , who was supported by P . M . Cnndick , an invaluable attendant on these occasions ; Bro . Smith as S . W ., Loane as J . W ., and Bros . Worsley , Judd , Watson ,

Power , Koable , Watkins , Ivo 3 , Sadler , Whito , Dixon , and others . Bro . Myers was unavoidably absent , having to fulfil a similar task at the Dalhonsie Lodge of Instruction . Tho sections wero very ably and correctly worked , as follows : —First Lecture—Bros . Loane , Power , Smith , Worsley , P . M . Cnndick , sections 5 and G bping omitted . In the Second Lecture—Bros . Watkins and Smith worked the first

and second sections respectively , and as tho time did not allow of more being accomplished , the Lodgo was resumed to tho first degree , when Bro . Smith was unanimously elected W . M . for tho onsning week . Bro . P . M . Musto said ho conld not allow the brethren to disperse without thanking them for their attendance . Although

the Preceptor of the Lodge , he must say it was one of the best meetings as regarded attendance they had had . lie hoped to be long among them as their Preceptor , for though thoy had now reached the summer months , when other Lodges could scarcely securo a sufficient number of brethren , tho Friars Lodge of Instruction scorned to provo as attractive as during tho busier portion of tho year .

The ceromony of Installation will bo rehearsed iu the St . Michael ' s Lodge of Instruction , at Bro . Kent ' s , the Moorgate Station Restaurant , opposite the Metropolitan Railway Station , on Thursday Evening , 10 th June , at 8 o ' clock p . m ., punctually , by Bro . Alfred Withers , I . P . M . of the mother Lodge . Brethren are cordially invited to attend .

It is with sincere regret wo mention that , after a brief illness which only lasted four days , Bro . Giuseppe Mazzoni , Grand Master of the Grand Orient of Italy , expired at Prato , on the 11 th instant . His funeral , which was attended by representatives of the various Masonic bodies ,

took place on the 14 th instant . Bro . Mazzoni had taken a leading part in politics , having been one of the triumvirate of Tuscany , in the stirring times of 1849 . He had represented Prato in four Parliaments , and was made a Senator in 187 G . He had been re-elected Grand Master of Italian Freemasons no less than four times .

Wc mentioned last week that Her Majesty had graciously signified licr intention of raising Bros . Right Hon . R . fiowe , and B . II . Jvnalchbnll-Hugessen to the Peerage . The Gazette announces that these srcntlemen will take their

-rats in the Upper House of Parliament by tho style and title of Baron Shcrbvooko of Sherbrooke in the county of Surrey , andBrabouvno of Bvabouvnc in the county of Kent respectively .
