AN item of considerable importance in connection with next year ' s Festival on behalf of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls is the announcement that-a meeting of the Committee of the Staffordshire Masonic Charitable Association has been called for to-day ( Saturday ) at Stafford , to organise the support of the Province for the Earl of

Dartmouth Provincial Grand Master , in his presidency of the 112 th Anniversary Festival ofthe Institution . It is pointed out that at the Boys Centenary Festival the Brethren of Staffordshire raised the magnificent sum of 4 , 000 guineas , and

it is locally anticipated that the amount will be largely exceeded on the occasion of next year ' s celebration , as a compliment to Lord Dartmouth , who is a most popular Provincial Grand Master . Promises of handsome donations are already coming in to the executive .

IT is most satisfactory to learn that in consequence of an extraordinary vacancy having occurred in the School , the Board of Management has resolved to admit , with the seventeen boys elected at the Quarterly Court of the 13 th inst ., the highest unsuccessful candidate on the poll ; viz : — John Bowen Jones , who polled 5 , 107 votes . This boy will be admitted in due course with the others , making eighteen

new pupils in all . The event which renders his admission possible has occurred at a most opportune moment , as general regret must have been felt for those who worked on the lad ' s behalf so zealously as to collect upwards of 5 , votes , and yet did not succeed in securing him a place at the time .

The Quarterly Communication of the Grand Lodge of Scotland will be held on Thursday next , 2 nd prox ., at Freemasons' Hall , Edinburgh . 000 Another Lodge is to be started on Tuesday next , when

the Yonck , No . 2771 , will be consecrated at Freemasons ' Hall , the ceremony being fixed for 3 p . m ., with banquet to follow at 5 . 15 . We hope to give a report of the proceedings in our next issue .

We are asked to direct attention to the weekly meetings of the Royal Savoy Lodge of Instruction , No . 1744 , held at the Earl Russell , 2 Pancras Road , N . W ., every Monday evening , at 8 o ' clock . Good work and jovial companionship are features at the Lodge .

The 164 th Anniversary of the Angel Lodge , No . 51 , is to be celebrated at the Cups Hotel , Colchester , on Monday , at 4 . 30 p . m . Bro . Willoughby John Bean S . W . is the W . M .-

elect , and he will be installed by Bro . Cluade E . Egerton-Green P . P . S . G . W . It is expected there will be a large and brilliant array of visitors .

We remind our readers of the special meeting of the Israel Lodge of Instruction , No . 205 , at the Rising Sun , Globe Road , Bethnal Green , E ., to-morrow ( Sunday ) , when

Bro . Chas . Johnson J . W . 2206 Preceptor of the Southern Star Lodge of Instruction , and a zealous official elsewhere , will work the Fifteen Sections , commencing at 6 o ' clock prompt .

An interesting event took place at the meeting of the St . John's Club of Instruction , held at the Free Library , Lavender Hill , S . W ., on Sunday morning last , when the members presented their Preceptor Bro . C . B . Powell W . M .-

elect of the Lodge of Asaph , No . 1319 , with a handsome diamond ring , in recognition of the valuable services he had rendered to the Club . There was a large meeting of members

to pay their repects to Bro . Powell , the presentation being made on their behalf by Bro . Thomas R . Busby W . M . of the New Cross Lodge .

ONCE again we are called upon to mourn the severance of a link in the chain which binds us to the earliest days of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE , this time by the death of Bro . J . E . Shand P . M . of the City of Westminster Lodge , No . 1563 , who , it seems to us , has been a supporter of the paper and a frequent contributor to its pages from the

earliest days of its existence . Our Brother Shand died suddenly on Saturday morning , on Vauxhall Bridge , while on his way to his offices at the Town Hall , Westminster , where he was officially engaged as Registrar , and was buried on Thursday , at Brompton Cemetery . Bro . Shand was a

staunch supporter of Freemasonry , at all times ready to record any items of news or information he deemed likely to interest our readers , and we shall miss his brief but pointed epistles now that he has passed away . One of the lastest communications we had from Bro . Shand was an obituary

notice of a mutual friend , and with it came Bro . Shand ' s query as to the possibility of such a notice being required for himself . We little thought when we received that card that the mournful duty of recording his demise would so soon devolve upon us , but so it is , and our regret is all the more

severe in thinking of the sudden death that took our old friend from us . We tender our sincere sympathy with his widow , who , it is needless to say , is terribly upset at the loss of her life ' s companion ; and also with his two sons , all of

whom may find some little consolation in knowing that Bro . Shand was respected and esteemed by a large number of his Masonic Brethren , v . * ho regarded him as a worthy man and Brother . His age was 61 years .
