The Meaning Of The Work.

We are not swayed by every wind of doctrine , nor do we change our form of government after the manner of the peoples of the earth . Nothing human is more unchangeable than Freemasonry . We do not say it is absolutely unchangeable , for nothing mundane is that , nor aught " above " the earth , save the Grand Architect of the Universe Himself . Fallible man cannot attain unto

perfection . But we willingly place the Graft alongside of any other human institution , and say , " Look upon this picture , and on that . " We aim to change as little as possible , if possible to remain unchanged , while other institutions are hourly tinkered afc

by apprentices , to make them " better . " Heaven knows many of them need to be better , but the form and the substance of Freemasonry are theoretically perfect , and our only effort should be to conform ourselves , individually , to their standards .

Masons are sometimes indifferently good , or it may be absolutely bad , but Masonry itself is absolutely above reproach . We say to others what we say to ourselves—study ! Let us study to learn more and more of the glorious truths taught in the royal art of Freemasonry , and to embody them more and more in our daily lives and in our intercourse with our Brother Masons and fellow men . — " Keystone . "

We are sorry to learn that ill-health and infirmity are so far affecting our esteemed Brother R . C . Else D . P . G . M . Somersetshire , and chief of the Mark Degree in that Province ,

as to cause his withdrawal from the prominent position he has so long occupied in the district . Although he may find himself unable to continue his former activity we trust it will be long ere he wholly retires from active Masonic life .

A Grand Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees will be held at Mark Masons' Hall , Great Queen Street , " on Monday , 6 th prox ., at 6 . 30 p . m . By permission of the M . W . G . M . all regularly registered members of the Allied Degrees are invited to be present . The business includes the report of the Grand

Secretary , the appointment and investiture of the Grand Officers , & c . A banquet will be provided at the Freemasons ' Tavern , at 7 o ' clock , at which the Grand Master has most

kindly consented to preside . The Tickets will be 21 s , inclusive of wine , and . it is requested that every Brother intending to dine will forward his name to the Grand Secretary , not later than Saturday next , 4 th prox .

Jewels And Other Presentations.

JEWELS AND OTHER PRESENTATIONS .

WE have witnessed many great changes in Freemasonry during the period of our association with this paper , one of the most radical being in connection with what have rightly been designated the outward and visible signs of Freemasonry . It being admitted that it is the hope of reward that sweetens labour , it is but right the . members of the Craft should have

some recognised means of expressing approval with those of their fellows who win distinction ; and the Masonic jewel zeroed to be the most appropriate form of recognition possible , inasmuch as by its use outsiders , as well as members of a Brother's Lodge , might learn that good work had been done , and had been duly appreciated .

Wo can remember when the majority of the jewels presented to Masters and others , as marks of favour , although perhaps very attractive to the eye , were of little real value ; and though it may be wrong to look a gift horse in the month there were many who afterwards viewed with regret the tinsel and paste for which five , ten or fifteen guineas had been paid , and which a few

years after wag not worth as many shillings . But a change set in , and in place of gaudy tinsel it became fashionable to have plain gold jewels , of recognised standard , very few presentations being made but were of intrinsic as well as sentimental value , and there are probably very few among us who regret the alteration .

But yet another change is slowly but surely making its way in our midst , and we think it will be agreed the movement is one in the ri ght direction , it becoming more generally recognised that even better presentations are possible than Masonic Jewels something of use , as well as ornament ; something a Brother may take home , and by constantly having before him , may appreciate far more than the Masonic jewel , which he may only see some dozen or twenty times a year . Rings and other articles of jewellery are

particularly applicable , as also are plated goods useful in the household , and so it is that a new industry may be paid to have sprung up among caterers for Masonic requirements . Our Bro . W . J . Carroll , of 17 Beer Lane , Great Tower Street , E Cd , is specially alive to this fact , and has supplied many useful and valuable article . ? for presentation purposes , not that he has wholly forsaken the recognised Masonic jewel , which he supplies as of yore , hall marked , and of guaranteed quality , but rather that

he has acquired many other articles suitable for presentations . Our readers might profitably devote a few miuutes to an inspection of his extensive stock , should thoy desire anything in the direction we refer to , or a letter addressed to Bro . Carroll will ensure his personal attention , and the advantage of a wide and varied experience of what is wanted and likely to be appreciated . We have had personal experiences of Bro . Carroll ' s successful efforts , and can fully vouch for his capabilities .
