Ho likewise mentioned the project in hand for raising £ 1 , 000 by shilling tickets , on tho principle of an art nnion , entitling every purchaser to participate in a ballot for Life Govonorahips of the Bnys' School . He further stated that upward s of
6 , 000 tickets were already distributed . Bro . Constable resumed his seat , thanking the brethren on behalf of the Visitors . Tho toast of the " Past Masters" followed , and was enthusiastically received . Bro . Turner replied , apologising for his youth and apnaront presumption in returning thanks for this toast , as there wero Past Masters who had hold that position ranging from thirty . five years downwards , and the example they had set the younger members was one worthy
of emulation . He particularl y thanked them for tho unostentatious assistance ho had always received at their hands ; he was sure that whatever duty tho Past Masters might bo called upon to discharge , they would be always found ready and willing . In 1797 the Lolgo removed for a short time to the Star Hotel , but returned to tho ltaindier , and there remainod until 1812 , when it was removed to the Bell Hotel , where it has continued to meet until tho present year . The brethren havo been long desirous to acquire private rooms for their meetings , but no shitablo opportunity has before occurred . They now possess a
Lodgo-r : om of noble dimensions , with a suitable dining-room , and all other necessary conveniences . Tho inaugural meeting took place on tho 5 th instant , under the presidency of the Worshipful Master , Major W . The Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement holds its weekly meetings every Tuesday , at the Jamaica Coffee House , St , Michael's Alley , Cornhill , where thoso who are desirous of perfecting themselves iu the difficult duties appertaining to the Royal Arch degree will find opportunity of doing so . There are always Companions present not only willing , but competent ^ to
impart instruction . The room is spacious and the neighbourhood quiet—no unimportant qualification to render a visit profitable . On our last visit we found the very able Comp . John Constable occupying the first chair . His rendering of the ceremony was iu accordance with what is always expected of him , especially as he had the
assistance of Comps . Lemann H ., Gottheil J ., White S . E ., and Major Finney P . S ., whose style of working is well known . The Chapter well deserves the active support of Royal Arch Masons , as the work is excellent , the position central , and tho time early . Business com . mences at 6 . 30 , and ends at 8 . 30 .

Frederick Julius Macaulay of Lodge No . 142 was exalted , and Companion William Beattie of Chapter 291 elected a joining member . E . Companion Masterman was installed in tho chair of Z . Present—Comps . Magnus Ohren , Robins , Francis , Sugg , Harty , Spencer and others . A cheerful evening followed tho banquet .
Thomtree Lodge , No . 512 . —This Lodge hold its regular fortnightly meeting on Saturday , 21 st October , at the Hall , Thornliebank , and was opened at 7 p . m . by Bros . R . Scobie R . W . M , R . Fletcher S . W ., R . McEwan J . W ., Wm . Jardino T ., Edw . Schindler Secretary , and Bro . J . Harner P . M . Two candidates wero proposed and accepted for initiation , but owing to the inclemency of tho
weather they did not attend , and some local business was transacted , after which the Lodge was placed for a short time in the hands of the J . W . The Master , after giving the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts , gave that of the " Visitors , " replied to by Bro . G . W . Wheeler , for the youngest Lodge in Scotland , "The Albert Edward 592 . " He dwelt on the spirit evinced by this young lodge , who only got their
working letter on the 14 th , and turned out so well in the grand procession on the 17 th . Bro . J . Gunn J . W . replied , thanking the members of the Thorntrce , his Mother Lodge , for tho assistance they had rendered them , especially their Master , who had come over and passed and raised their first lot of candidates . Though au officer of the new Lodge , he did nob intend to neglect his mother , 512 . The Lodge was then closed in harmony .
