ment , which extended over upwards of two hours , concluding with a splendid rendering of " The Revenge , " which was much enjoyed by the boys and should serve as an object lesson in elocution . Bro . Rev . PL A . Plebb thanked Bro . Miles for so kindly
coming to entertain the pupils of the School . Three hearty cheers were accorded the entertainer . Bro . Miles , in response , said he had been before the public twenty years , but he had never met with such a welcome—it was evidently sincere , and appeared to be genuinely appreciated by the artist .
There are many other talented Brethren who would probably equally appreciate such applause—the opportunity of acquiring it lays before them , and we may truly say that
such efforts are sure to provide " profit and pleasure for the orphan lads of the Craft . There was a goodly assembly of friends of the Institution , in addition to the pupils and staff of the School .
****************** The " sea serpent" of Freemasonry , in the form of an attack by some benighted being who has sold himself body and soul to adoration of the poor old fossil who . poses as Pope of Rome , has appeared in Plymouth , where Canon
Courtenay , speaking at the Roman Cathedral , uttered the well known nonsense which amuses , and we suppose edifies , the masses of the Romish Church . It is not necessary for us to reprint any of the defences made by Brethren and others in the west of England—the local press has been full
of them—but we may express our pity for the man who , as a puppet of the Pope , and in his official position , has slandered the Craft in a manner which , if he is not so bigoted as to be blind , he must know to be unjust . We do not think
Freemasonry suffers any harm from these periodical outbursts of temper in the Romish church , but we do believe that the cause of Rome is injured by its frequent unjustifiable attacks on Freemasonry , which very many , even among the worshippers of the Pope , know to be untrue .
********** If any of our readers have Boys votes to spare they will be much appreciated by the Brethren who are working on behalf of William John Bartlett , the six years old son of the late Bro . Bartlett , who was a member of the Sir Piugh
Myddelton Lodge , No . 1602 , at the time of his death . Among those recommending the case are the Brethren and Officers of the Sir Hugh Myddelton Lodge ; the Mayor of Finsbury ,
Bro . Enos Plowes P . M . and P . Z . 1687 ; the Mayor of Islington , Bro . W . J . Crump P . A . G . D . C . Eng . ; and several other well known and influential Brethren . Votes are urgently wanted , and if sent to our care shall be rightly placed .
