' Usually the annual banquets of the three Reading

Lodges aro held at the Great Western Hotel , but this year the attendance was so largo that it was necessary to have tho dinner at tho Town Hall . This alteration is , in some respects , an improvement . There is more room and more air . On the other hand the hall is one in which speakers can with difficulty make themselves heard , so had are the acoustic properties of the buildinu . It was also noticed that the hot water pipes with which the building is warmod

are muoh too potent to suit the taste of tho persons who sit near them . An excellent banquet was served by Bro . Flanasjan . The company numbered ahoit ninety . Tho W . M . took the chair . On rising to propose the Queen and the Craft he was received with an outburst of cheering , puch as is rarely heard in Readinsr . In responding for the Prince of Wales M . W . G . M . and the other Grand Officers , Bro . H . J . Strong spoke of the ereat attention and the amount of timo whioh some of the Grand Officers devoted to their duties . The

Deputy Provincial Grand Mastor in charge , in returning thanks for himself and the other Provincial Grand Officers Present aud Past , said that the progress and position of Masonry in the Province were satisfactory . There was the prospect of the institution of a new Lodge in the Province . The W . M ., whose health was drunk with great cordiality , said that he had identified himself with Freemasonry

because he perceived that religion was the foundation of it . The Provincial Grand Secretary , in giving the toast Masonio Charit y , referred to the fact that last year nearly a hundred thousand pounds was raised for the benefit of tho three great Masonic Institutions . That sum was irrespective of what was distributed in Charity by the Lodges severall v . Bro . Martin said the Lodge of Union would

be represented by a Steward at each of the thioo great Masonic Festivals in the present year . Bro . E . Margrott rotnrnod thanks , and lucidly explained tho manner in which it was sought to make the greatest possiblo tiso of all tho votes entrnstod to him as Charity Steward . The Visitors was next proposed by Bro . Murdoch , and responded to by Bro . II . G . Powell and other brethren . Bro . Arthur

Welch P . M . gave the Immediate Past Master and other Post Masters of the Lodge of Union . Bro . Welch spoke of the excellent woik done by tho Immediate Past Master , Bro . W . G . Millar , of the hospitality shown by him , and by the handsome gift made by him that day , a silver chain for tho W . M . ' s collar , and this presentation had taken place in a most unostentatious maimer , an the donor had made no allusion to it . Bro . Millar suitably replied . The other

toasts were tho Worshipfnl Master and Brethren of the Grey Friars and Kendrick Lodges ; the Wardens and other Officers of the Lodge of Union ; the Provincial Grand Secretary Bro . J . W . Martin , a toast which was received with great enthusiasm ; and the Tyler ' s toast . There was some good singing by Bros . W . T . Bilgou , J . C . Allen , W . Crntchley , and E . Woodland . The proceedings throughout were characteristised by great warmth and cordiality , and the W . M . ' s year of office commenced iu the most agreeable manner .

Hatchings Senior Past Master of the Lodge spoke of tbe valuable services rendered to tho Lodge and Freemasonry by the I . P . M . Bro . Bewsey , and begged to present

him , on behalf of the Lodge , with a P . M . ' s jewel . Bro . R . C . Ebe also spoke of the I . P . M . in glowing terms , and , at tho request of Bro . Hutcbings , pinned the jewel to tho breast of the recipient , who , in responding , epoke of the kindness he had at all times received from

Johnston was installed as Worshipfnl Master of this Lodge , when upwarJs of seventy meiabera of the Craft assembled to do honour to so worthy and distinguished a brother , Bro . Brakonridge was the Installing Master , and discharged the whole of his onerous duties in a manner whioh has seldom ever baen

equalled and never excelled , and whioh stamps him as one of the first Masters in the Province of Cumberland and Westmoreland . A most enjoyable and enthusiastic meeting , whioh augurs well for the future of 872 i was brought to a dose about eleven o ' olook by singing the National Anthem .

GOSPORT LODGE , No . 903 . r PHE Lodgo room at the India Arms Hotel , Gosport , was filled -1- with members aud visitors on Tuesday ovening , 10 th inst ., tbe occasion being the installation as W . M . of Bro . Montague Hart S . W . in succession to Bro . H . Long . The ceremony was impressively performed by Bro . W . A . Rowe , and subsequently tbe new W .
