An Ideal Holiday.

AN IDEAL HOLIDAY .

Our representative ' s cruise to the Fjords of Norway . WE must confess we had certain misgivings as the time approached for the commencement of our holiday trip aboard the S . Y . " Argonaut , " to the Fjords of Norway . We had selected this form of excursion believing it would be a complete change from tho ordinary sea-side trip , and because

w . e felt there would be more real relief from the strains and turmoil of business if we were beyond the reach of the telegraph and daily post , but we should certainly have acted differently had we first of all consulted our friends—and in that case we should have missed ono of the most enjoyable holidays that has ever fallen to our lot , and should have remained unacquainted with some of the grandest scenery it is possible to imagine .

There seem to be very great differences of opinion existing in our midst as to what is possible , and also what is probable , in connection with the Yachting Cruises now becoming more and more popular month by month , a popularity that is easily explained if all are treated as we and our fellow passengers were on the recent trip of the " Argonaut" to Norway , but we anticipate the doubts will soon be set at rest when those who avail themselves of the accommodation offered return home and recount their

experiences . When we mentioned our decision to take our holiday afloat we were told by one that the monotony of the trip would make us ill , another said the continual round of excitement must seriously affect all who experienced it , while yet another told us the Yacht under such circumstances would be little better than a floating restaurant , with food alike short and badly cooked ; lack of sociability , and a general exbibition of personal selfishness was freely predicted , but yet we decided to proceed .

Having—figuratively speaking—nailed our colours to the mast , we journeyed to the St . Pancras torminus of the Midland Railway , where a special train was in waiting to convey the passengers to Tilbury . Beyond an occasional glance around at what were regarded as fellow travellers , and a quiet thought , perhaps , as to what sort of companions they would prove , little occurred before leaving London , and when the Essex riverside station was reached there was the excitement of looking after one ' s luggage , and

keeping it in sight ; but there was no necessity for concern under this head , as ample arrangements had been made for the embarkation , the passengers being first put aboard by means of a Tender , and the luggage speedily following . Being thus fairly launched on our experiment we sought our berth , exchanged a few words with those who shared our cabin , and settled down determined to do or die—we hardly cared which , as either would certainly be a novel experience , and , as the saying goes , anything for a change .

The change came in due course , when our first dinner on the Yacht was announced , and we seated ourselves in the spacious dining saloon . Here each guest % vas supplied with a printed list of his or her fellow passengers , an taking our experience on this trip as an example we must certainly commend this system of mutually introducing one to another . It was a truly matterof-fact method , but it served its purpose admirably , and from that moment it seemed as if everyone knew everybody else , and the reserve so trying at

many social functions was removed , giving place to that friendliness all round which afterwards went very far to ensure the enjoyment of the party . The feeling of general equality was heightened when we reached tho open sea , " the fellow feeling that makes us wondrous kind" coming over most of us in the form of a severe attack of Neptune ' s special malady , and for a time at leastj the plain fare known as ship ' s biscuits was in great demand being preferred by several of us far beyond the dainty dishes provided

for our delectation , but sorely neglected on this occasion . This was not long the case , however , and by the time we reached the opposite shore we were as ready as anyone to sit down to the substantial meals provided on tho " Argonaut , " often feeling prepared to go nap on the menu card , as it was termed by those who felt capable of negotiating the whole of the courses provided for the different moals . This was no light undertaking , be it understood , as a glance at the following specimen menus we brought away with us will prove .

We are not able to find the copy of the luncheon card we had retained for this column , and perhaps it is just as well it is missing , for we have been told more than once that if we attempted to keep pace with breakfasts and dinners like the above , with a luncheon in between , it is not to be wondered at that we have occasional fits of iudigestion . Our friends may take our word for it , the " Argonaut ' s " luncheons are on the same lavish style as the breakfast and dinner shown above , while supplementary efforts to sustain life are provided in the form of Coffee and biscuits at 6 ' 30 a . m ., and Afternoon tea at 4-30 p . m .

But a well equipped vessel , with an attentive staff ; good food and plenty of it ; a sociable happy company and continued amusement—necessary though they may be to the enjoyment of a cruise—were not the object of our trip . We went to see the scenery of Norway , and what wo witnessed was far beyond our most sanguine expectations—it was grand , and viewed as wo saw it , from the cosy deck of the yacht , it was far more enjoyable than wo could

have imagined . We took part in several trips ashore , visited glaciers and clambered almost up to the snow line on some of the mountains , and had such a feast of waterfalls as will never be forgotten . The first two or three cascades wo regarded as superb , but they are so numerous and so imposing along the route _ we followed that one almost ceased to regard them with wonder—the feeling changing to appreciation of their individual beauties .

Leaving Tilbury on tho Wednesday evening ( 3 rd August ) wo sighted the coast of Norway on Friday evening , and the following day steamed up the Hardanger Fjord , and anchored at Odde in the afternoon , having had our first sight of the wonderful precipitous mountain , from 3 , 000 to 5 , 000 feet high . Sunday was spent at Ocide and in visiting tho beautifulLotefos and Espelandfos , and the Buarbrae Glacier . Bergen was reached on Monday morning , and the day passed in exploring the town .
