ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Haymarket Theatre . —The extraordinary success of Mr . Edward Rose ' s adaptation of Mr . Stanley Weyman ' s novel , " Under the red robe , " is exemplified by the fact that Messrs . Harrison and Maude are now obliged to supplement the ordinary evening performances by Wednesday and Saturday matinees , in order to supply the demand for seats . This pleasing romantic play fully justifies the appreciation of the public . Mr . Herbert Waring is to be congratulated upon the rapid rise ho has made in his profession , by his representation of the honourable though dishonoured

Gil de Berault , which complex character he pourtrays with such an admirable art . He is ably seconded by Miss Winifred Emery , who charmingly sustains the part of Reneo de Cocheforet . Although the interest is centred in these two personages there are others represented with such detail as to make the play a perfect gallery of theatrical portraits . Thus Mr . Cyril Maude shows his artistic methods in the subordinate part of the foppish Captain Larolle , which in other hands might easily become ridiculous . Another excellent sketch is given bv Mr . E . H . Clark , as the dumb retainer Clou , whose action

becomes tragic in its intensity . Mr . Sidney Valentine bears himself with sufficient dignity as the dread Cardinal Richelieu , and Mr . Bernard Gould is to be commended for his rendering of the stern Lieutenant . Mesdames Eva Moore and Coleman , together with Messrs . H . Revelle , J . L . Mackay , and D . Milward , represent the remaining characters with great advantage to the play . The beautiful scenery by Hann and Harker are perfect studies in scenic art , that of Richelieu ' s Palace being a wonderful piece of perspective . " Under the red robe " is a play to be seen and enjoyod .

Vaudeville . —It is not surprising that the merry farce , " A night out , " continues its successful career to crowded houses , for it is full of bustling fun and complications that remind ono very strongly of " The pink dominoes , " and as the performers have been playing together for some time they naturally have all the points brought out and are seen to the best advantage . Mr . George Giddins is indefatigable in his exertions and carries the piece through in excellent style , while Miss Maud Hobson , Mr . Charles Sugden , Mr . William Wyes , Mrs . Edmund Phelps , and Miss Pattie Brown

make the most of their opportunities , with the result that the house is kept in a continuous roar of laughter . As the principal item of the programme does not commence before nine o ' clock , it is preceded by a lively little play entitled , " Round a tree , " written by Mr . W . H . Risque , the courteous business manager . It narrates a wife ' s plan to regain the affections of an indifferent husband , and affords scope for Miss Phyllis Broughton , Mr . Neville Doone , Miss Sybil Grey , and Mr . George Grossmith jun . to display their respective talents . The piece admirably serves its purpose and is well received .

A peculiar anachronism has been discovered at the Avenue Theatre in " Nelson ' s Enchantress , " which does not say much for the historical knowledge of any concerned . In the scene of the State Ball at Naples , given in celebration of the battle of the Nile , which was won in 1798 , the Union Jack is shown as a special decoration . The merest schoolboy could inform the management that this flag , created as a symbol of the Three Kingdoms , was not devised until after the Union in 1801 .

Mr . Beerbohm Tree announces the opening of his new theatre , Her Majesty ' s , so named by special permission of the Queen , for Wednesday , the 28 th April , when Mr . Gilbert Parker ' s play " The seats of the mighty " will be presented . THE 50 " th performance of " My Friend the Prince " will take place at the Garrick Theatre on Boat Race evening , Saturday , 3 rd April .
