But his motion of 1869-70 covered a larger extent of ground , and pressod for a Committee of Past Masters " to inquire into tho merits of the respective systems of working now in practice , and to report to Grand Lodgo thereon , with such

recommendations as they may think necessary to prevent deviation from the established mode , such deviations being , according to tho Constitutions of Freemasonry , improper , and not to be justified or countenanced . " None , therefore , are to blame for supposing that Bro . Stevens ' late motion in Grand Lodge , and the discussions ho set going in your columns , followed as the latter wero by their republication in book

form , had something in common between them . However , what ideas may have been formed by others is comparatively of small moment . The alternatives to be faced are ( 1 ) Will Bro . Stevens bo wise in pressing the matter still further , or even proposing to Grand Lodge , " that the law it enacted in 1869-70 bo absolutely cancelled ? " or ( 2 ) will it be moro satisfactory for him to leave things as they are ,

contenting himself with bringing under tho notice of Grand Lodge such prominent deviations from established practice as have come nnder hi 3 notice ; such , for instance , as that mentioned by Bos ALBUS in a recent number of your Masonic contemporary , and referred to by a correspondent of yours shortly after—I think in the week ended

13 th instant ? I fancy the latter will be the better course . Bro .
