As the guest of my excellent friend and journalistic compatriot , Bro . Isaac Seaman , I had the privilege of breaking new Masonic ground at the Hampden Lodge , which is held at Hampden House , just over the border of Islington , Phcenix Street way , and which has the distinction

of being the only Lodge in London that has a Masonic Temple , expressly designed for the work . And a very pretty temple it is , the most elegant I have seen . Moreover , the Lodge is a good Lodge , presided over by a capital Master in Bro . Thomas J . Mercer , and having a thoroughly

good Senior Warden in Bro . Thomas Moss , B . A ., who will be remembered as sometime Deputy Superintendent Registrar of Islington . Hampden House is a unique institution , built by the late Eccleston Gibb , as an Institute for the cultivation of arts and literature , and

combining a first-rate residential club for gentlemen . It is a remarkable establishment in its way , and is important enough to run a Freemasons' Lodge of its own . The Lodge was very busy on Tuesday , 8 th inst ., there being four initiations , and the work was done in an unimpeachable

manner . At the succeeding banquet—modestly termed a " supper "—there was a joyous assembly , who not only did honour to the Masonic toasts , but provided , under the superintendence of Bro . Organist W . G . Smith , a really superior and amusing Bohemian concert . The guests were

not only hospitably treated , but well toasted , the chief respondents for the visitors being Bro . Major Linsey , R . A ., and Bro . H . Passmore Edwards , son of that good man who

once offered Islington a free library , and will do again , I hope , when Islington gets wiser . Hearty good wishes to the Hampden Lodge . It is young , but evidently flourishing . —The "Merrie Villager , " in "Islington Gazette . "
