Altham waa examined aa to his proficiency as an E . A . This proving satiafactory , he waa entrusted . Lodge proceeded to the second degree , when Bro . Altham waa passed to the degree of F . C .

by the W . M ., and the working tools were explained by the S . W . Lodgo closed to tbe first degree , and Messrs . Joshua Orrell and William Townsend , who were proposed at the last regular meeting aa candidates , were balloted for and approved . They signed the requisite declaration , and were initiated into Masonry , the former by Bro .

Court P . M ., and the latter by the W . M . Bro . Cosgrave . The working tools of the degree were explained by Bro . W . E . Bardsley J . W ., and tbe Charge delivered by Bro . G . P . Brockbank P . G . Standard Bearer England . It was agreed , on the motion of Bro . Jno . Barrett , seconded by Bro . E . G . Harwood P . Prov . G . Std . Bearer ,

that the Pro Grand Master's circular respecting the proposed Jubilee Fund be assented to , and the Grand Secretary informed thereof , aa requested in the circular . The ceremonies were conducted with great care and accuracy , each Officer performing his duty in admirable manner . The choir of the Lodge , ably led by Bro . Jno .

Taylor Prov . G . S . D ., rendered moat efficient service and acquitted themselves with great credit . Bro . John Miles presided at the organ . Hearty good wishes were tendered by the visiting brethren . A portion of tbe ancient rules and charges having been read by the S . W ., the Lodge closed in peace aud harmony at 8 * 15 p . m . The usual banqnet followed .

gies for non-attendance , in consequence of the severe weather , were numerous on this occasion . The Lodge having been opened in the three degrees , the Preceptor ( Bro . Stevens ) delivered bis Lectnre on the Ritual and Ceremonial ofthe Symbolic Degrees in Freemasonry , Which was listened to with earnest attention , and , as opportunity

offered , received many expressions of approval . Tho interest excited by the opening remarks of our worthy brother was maintained "without diminution throughout an address which occupied more than two hours in delivery ; and the points of working and diversities in connection therewith are so numerous that the lecturer himself

admitted the necessity of omitting reference to many of them , from fear of exhausting the attention of his audience . A clear explanation of the ritual was , however , the result of his address , and no brother could be otherwise than instructed and improved by hearing it . A very cordial vote of thanks to Bro . Stevens was recorded at

the close of the lecture . The Lodge was then closed to the first degree , and five brethren were accepted as members . Bro . Thomas Poore P . M . P . Z . was appointed to preside at the next meeting , when the Fifteen Sections will be worked . The Worshipfnl Master of

The Great City Lodge , on behalf of his Officers and himself , accepted the invitation of the Lodge of Instruction to occupy their respective official positions on the occasion of the rehearsal of the ceremony of installation by Bro . Stevens , on the 3 rd prox . The Lodge was then closed in due form .

THE THEATRES . & c .

— : o :- — Comedy . —The new comic opera " Mynheer Jan " may be described as possessing materials sufficient to win popularity ; nofc only ia ifc amusing , but tho musio , by Mr . Edward Jakobowski , ia both tuneful and ca ' chy , though nndoubtedly some of tho numbers cannot

be described as original . The piece is written in Me srs . Harry Paulton aud Mostyn Tedde ' s humorous style ; notwithstanding , the plot ia somewhat intricate . Still Mr . Jakobowski's portion of the work ia excellently done , while hia pretty aeatett , " Obedience , " in the firsfc act , and Miss Camillo D'Arville'a two aolos , " Love ' s a

King , " and " Dear Country , are especially worthy of note . Again the choruses at the commencement of each act are both pretty and tnnefol . The scene is laid in the Netherlands , time 1550 ; the characters introduced to the audience are of the usual comic opera class . The Governor of Krootz-lam whose daughter Camilla is in

love wifch a student , Karl ( who is President of a society called the Daisy Guild ) , but whose parentage ia unknown . Camilla is , however , desired to marry a certain Don Diego . The story is confusing , but much fun is caused by Don Diego being captured by Karl and the membera of the Daisy Guild , by whom he is imprisoned . As ifc

is necessary some one should appear at the castle , a friend of Karl named Hans undertakes to assume a disguise . The scene in the garden where Karl instructs Hans how to conduct himself creates great applause . In the last act Hans ia again the cause of all the fun ; he changes place with a scarecrow . All , however , turns oufc

well in the end , and Karl is recognised as the son of Donna Tralarn , The character of Hans is one that contains considerable humour , ard this is most successfully brought out by Mr . Harry Paulton , whose peculiar method seems to be thoroughly enjoyed . His song , " Few and far between , " is very amusing . The duet with Mr . Frank

Wyatt bears a resemblance to that of the robbers in " Ermime . Mr . Wyatt is well fitted in the part of the high spirited Karl . Miss Camille D'Arville and Mr . Joseph Tapley , as Katrine and Francis respectively , sang -with excellent judgment and precision , bufc M . Marins was scarcely so successful as usual . Miss Kate Munroe

makes a spirited Gretchen ; Miss Violet Melnotte , aa Camilla , showed improvement on her previous efforts ; and Madame Amadi acquitted herself well aa Donna Tralara . One of the greatest successes of the evening was Miss Alice Lethbridge aa Paquifca ; her Salterello dance

in the second act was both graceful and well executed . Other parte were adequately filled . The opera is well mounted ; new scenery baa been painted , by Mr . T . E . Ryan . A prosperous run may be anticipated .

Olympic . —Miss Grace Hawthorne announces thafc on ! y fcw i more matinees of " Heartsease" will be given , namely , on * ho morning of Wednesday , 2 nd March , and that of Wednesday , 9 ih of March . On Wednesday morning , 16 tb March , " Frou Frou " will be presented , Miss Hawthorne appearing as GUberlo .
