INSTALLATION MEETINGS , & c .

WILLIAM PRESTON LODGE , No . 766 . THE installation meeting took place on Thursday , at the Cannon , street Hotel . Lodge wns opened at 3 . 30 by the W . M ., Bro . W . Fleet Smart , v « ho was supported by Bros . William Drake S . W ., W . J . Collena J . W ., W . Jerrett Miller P . M . Treasnrer , W . Worrell P . M . Sec , A . Le Grand J . D ., A . Ramsey I . Heck was possed to tbe second degree by tbe W . M . Bro . P . M . Miller then took tho

chair , and after tbe candidates—Bros . J . Greenslade and H . F . Stoddard—had exhibited such knowledge as warranted them seeking preferment , the third degree was conferred upon them , the ceremony being most impressively rendered by Bro . Miller . The ballot was then brought into requisition for Mr . John Goode , who was proposed by Bro . W . J . Miller P . M ., and seconded by Bro . E . Kidman P . M .

The result was unanimously in favour of the candidate , who was introduced , and the ceremony of initiation was worked by Bro . Miller . Bro . Smart next resumed the chair to perform the ceremony of initiation , and the W . M . elect—Bro . William Drake—was presented by Bro . Miller , and the obligation wns regularly administered . A Board of Installed Masters was opened , and , this part of the ' ceremonr

completed , in due course the members below the rank of Installed Master were admitted , and the new W . M . saluted in tho three degrees . Tbe Officers were invested as follow : —Bros . W . J . Collens S . W ., A . Le Grand J . W ., W . Miller P . M . Treasnrer , W . Worrell P . M . Secretary , J . H . Brookes S . D ., A . C . Bees . P . M . J . D ., J . Turle Lee I . G ., 0 . Pay M . C ., Reinhardt Tyler , E . Kidman P . M . and

W . Johnston Stewards . The charges to the W . M ., Officers , and the brethren , were delivered with great fervonr by Bro . Miller , and after the Auditor ' s report had beon presented and adopted , routine work was brought on , and Lodge was closed . A capital banquet was partaken of by the brethren , about ( 30 sitting down to table . On removal of the cloth , the W . M . gave the toast of the Qneen and the Craft ,

and the National Anthem was sung . On rising to propose the second toast , the Wor . Master said the Most Worshipfnl Grand Master not only took a deep interest in Freemasonry himself , bnt had been instrumental in bringing into the Ordor two of his brothers , who were both shining lights in Freemasonry . After a song— "Dream Faces "—snng with great feeling by Miss Matilda Robv , the W . M .

proposed tho tonst of tho Pro Grand Master , tho Depnty Grand Master , and tho Grand Officers Present Past and , Brother Drake speaking to the toast in a few well chosen words . "The King ' s Highway , " which was entrusted to Brother Thomas Nettleship , was marked on the programme to follow this toast , and was most creditably rendered by this popular singer . The Charitv Box was now

handed ronnd ;—a laudable cnstom , which wo sbonlcl be pleased to see-more frequently carried out . Tho result in this case was most satisfactory , and reflected credit on the benevolent tendencies of the brethren of the William Preston Lodge . The health of the W . M . was proposed by Brother Smart , in terse and complimentary phrase , and then Miss Davoy sang , with great taste , Smart ' s popular song ,

'The Sailor ' s Story . " The W . M . replied , assuring the brethren of bis appreciation of tbe honour they had conferred upon him in elevating him to his present position . He was one of the initiates of their Lodge , and he would strive in every way to maintain its prestige . After a pinnoforto solo , by Brother Turlo Lee , the heath of the Initiate was tho tonst brought next nnder notice .

The W . M . stated that as Brother Goode represented the 50 th member on thoir roll , he was the only gentleman introduced to tho Lodge that night . Madame Worrell sang the next song— "In life and in death I am thine "—and was most deservedly applanded . After Brother Goode had acknowledged the hononr done him , Miss Roby favoured the company with "Robin Adair , " and again secured

the unanimous approval of the audience . The "Visitors' toast was next introduced by tho W . M . After enumerating thoso who were present , the W . M . remarked that much good was to be secured by the interchange of visits , and called on the members to do full honour to the toast . After a sons- by Bro . Nettleship , Bros . Hopekirk , Worley , StevensMorganand Moore acknowledged the toast . Here

, , Miss Davey , by her singing of " Darby and Joan , " added to tho on . . joyment of tho evening . In introducing tho toast of tho Immediate Past and Installing Master , Rrother Smart , the W . M ., said it must ever be gratifying to a Master leaving tho chair to know thafc his Lod ge was in a better position , financially and in point ; of nnmber as

regard s membership , than when he entered on his dnties . Tin ' s , fortunatel y , was what Brother Smart could pride himself upon . He had now to perform a duty which perhaps might bettor have been done earher in the evening ; ifc was to present Brother Smart with the handsome Past Master ' s jewel , which had unanimously been voted by the members . To Madamo Worrell was again entrusted the pleasure-

able duty of entertaining the company , and she sang , with intense spirit , " Never , ah , nevermore . " In replying , Brother Smart said he stood there , eight years after his initiation , a Past Master of the Lodge . Ho had striven to tho best of his ability to do his doty , and he laid the flattering miction to his soul that ho had been successful . He thanked one and all for the assistance he had received , and hoped ho might long bo spared to continue a member of the Lodge . The

remaining toasts were the Treasnrer and Secretary ; replied to by Bro Miller , who gave a brief sketch of the career of tho Lodge during the past fifteen years ; and by Bro . Worrell , who confined hia remarks more closely to the position in which tho Lodge stood at the present time . Bros . Braun and Cutmore replied for the "Past Masters , " and the " Officers " elicited response from Bros . Collens and others . In due course the Tyler was summoned , and tbe brethren separated , highly pleased with the evening ' s entertainment .

St . AUGUSTINE'S LODGE , No . 972 .

THE annual meeting of this Lodge was held at the Masonic Temple , St . Peter ' s Street , Canterbury , on Wednesday , 15 th November , when the ceremony of installing the W . M . for the ensuing year , T . B . Rossiter , was most impressively performed by his immediate predecessor Bro . S . F . Pringuer . After the conclusion of the business tbe brethren adjourned to tbe Guildhall Hotel , where they sat down to a sumptuous banquet , provided in the

worthy host ' s ( Bro . Shaxby ' s ) usual first-class style . The W . M took the chair , supported by V . W . Bro . J . S . Eastes D . P . G . M ., and the Mayor of Canterbury . After the brethren had dono justice to the good things provided , the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were given and duly honoured , interspersed with glees , songs , & c , by Bros . Plant , Moulding , Higgins , Rhodes and Smith .

ON Saturday Inst the annual meeting of this popular and prosperous Lodge was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell Newroad . There was a largo attendance , both of the members of the Lodge and visiting brethren . Among the former were Bros . Richards W . M . ( in the chair ) , Mansell S . W ., Middlemass J . Nairne , and the usual obligation having been dnlv administered and pledged , Lodge was opened in tho third degree , when all below tbe degree of Installed Master wero called on to " " withdraw . A Board was then opened , and the impressive ceremony proceeded . The outside brethren wero afterwards re .

admitted , who saluted the W . M . in the three degrees , under the direction of Brother Bickerton . This having been done with great precision and ability , the W . M . proceeded to invest his Officers , to whom collars were allotted as under , Bros . Richards I . P . M ., Nairne M . C ., Middlemass S . W ., Reynolds jun . J . W ., Reynolds sen . Treisurer , Hernaman Secretary , Brinton S . D ., Marsden J . D ., Forbes Steward , and Hall Organist ; Brother Walker not being present , tho

appointment of Inner Gnard was deferred . The new OITicors we' -o then saluted , and the W . M . presented , on behalf of tho Lodgo , a Past Master ' s jewel to his predecessor . At intervals , during the installation anthems wero sung , in a manner seldom hoard inside a Lodge whe ' n close tyled . We understand that it is intended to continue this practice , and wo hope that Brother llall , who has entered on his duties as Organist , for which position he is eminently qualified , will do all in hia ' power to cultivato a taste for music in his Lodge . ON Saturday Inst the annual meeting of this popular and prosperous Lodge was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell Newroad . There was a largo attendance , both of the members of the Lodge and visiting brethren . Among the former were Bros . Richards W . M . ( in the chair ) , Mansell S . W ., Middlemass J . After some other matters had been proceeded with , the W . W . elect was presented by Bro . Nairne , and the usual obligation having been dnlv administered and pledged , Lodge was opened in tho third degree , when all below tbe degree of Installed Master wero called on to " " withdraw . A Board was then opened , and the impressive ceremony proceeded . The outside brethren wero afterwards re .

admitted , who saluted the W . M . in the three degrees , under the direction of Brother Bickerton . This having been done with great precision and ability , the W . M . proceeded to invest his Officers , to whom collars were allotted as under , Bros . Richards I . P . M ., Nairne M . C ., Middlemass S . W ., Reynolds jun . J . W ., Reynolds sen . Treisurer , Hernaman Secretary , Brinton S . D ., Marsden J . D ., Forbes Steward , and Hall Organist ; Brother Walker not being present , tho

appointment of Inner Gnard was deferred . The new OITicors we' -o then saluted , and the W . M . presented , on behalf of tho Lodgo , a Past Master ' s jewel to his predecessor . At intervals , during the installation anthems wero sung , in a manner seldom hoard inside a Lodge whe ' n close tyled . We understand that it is intended to continue this practice , and wo hope that Brother llall , who has entered on his duties as Organist , for which position he is eminently qualified , will do all in hia ' power to cultivato a taste for music in his Lodge .
