toasts being agreeably lightened by the musical efforts of Bros . Wroe , Davies , Barlow , Smith , Thompson , and Roberts . Bro . Jefferis , in proposing the health of the W . M ., reverted to the fact that his term of office had nearly expired , which would be a misfortune in more senses than one . His enthusiasm had been contagious , whilst his zeal and careful working had added materially to the success of the Lodge . Bro . Jefferis offered other tributes of a similar character to the Worshipful Master ' s worth , the Brethren accepting his utterances with hearty demonstrations of pleasure .
Bro . Akerman responded , stating , m the course of his speech , that he was proud to have been the first Master of the Manchester Lodge . He afterwards proposed the health of the Officers , the same being replied to by the S . W . and J . W . respectively , who both emphasised the remarks uttered by Bro . Jefferis , adding that two very striking features about their Worshipful Master were his rigid punctuality and dignity of demeanour , which had added lustre to the Lodge and its proceedings .
Bro . Akerman W . M . proposed the health of Bro . Boyer Treasurer , thanking him in the name of the Lodge for an extraordinary present which he had made of gavels formed of wood from Mount Lebanon , Syria , as follows : that for the use of the W . M . being of rosewood , that for the S . W . from the olive tree , whilst that for the J . W . is of oak . Bro . Boyer responded in suitable terms .
METROPOLITAN .
CONFIDENCE LODGE , No . 193 . THE annual ladies night was arranged for Monday , 20 th inst ., at Anderton's Hotol , and proved one of the most enjoyable meetings ever held in connection with the Lodge . A company of seventy-five members and friends assembled under the presidency of Bro . P . S . Plowright W . M . who , after the banquet , proposed in brief terms the toasts customary on such occasions , after which the party adjourned to the ball-room , where dancing was continued until the early morn .
MERCHANT NAVY LODGE , No . 781 . THE installation meeting was held at the Town Hall , Limehouse , on Tuesday , 14 th . Brother G . H . Seage , who has just completed a most successful year of office , acted as installing Officer , assisted by Bro . Pringle P . M . the much-respected Preceptor of the Lodge of Instruction as D . C . It needs no praise to say that under such auspices the ceremony was worked in a thorough and efficient manner , says the "East London Observer . "
Bro . T . D . Burges , who has well deserved the honour now accorded him , was duly installed , and , after the usual honours , he invested the following Brethren : Brothers G . H . Seage I . P . M ., J . Lancett S . W ., A . P . Bebrouth J . W ., T . B . Daniells P . M . Treasurer , C . Breden P . M . Secretary , G . W . Ball S . D ., G . E . Morrow J . D ., G . Puttick Organist , D . G . The addresses were delivered with marked impressiveness by Bro . Seage . After the ceremony was completed , and the Lodge closed , the Brethren adjourned to a well served banquet . The Loyal toasts were enthusiastically received . Bro . Seage , in proposing the W . M ., referred to his past work , and his general assiduity in all that tended to the good of the Lodge .
The W . M ., after briefly responding , proposed the Installing Master , which was responded to in a manner deserving of the occasion . For the visitors , Bros . J . Terry , T . Barnes ( the patriarch of East-end Freemasons ) , Warner , Adams , Parrett , and others replied . Brother Terry , referring to the high position in assisting the Charities to which the Lodge had attained , said their contributions amounted to one-twentieth of that raised by all the metropolitan Lodges .
Bro . Nelson , who acted as Steward on a recent occasion , said that under such worthy " auspices as those just referred to he would only be too pleased to represent the Merchant Navy Lodge should any future opportunity occur . To Bro . Nelson an address on vellum was presented for his grand work for the Masonic Charities .
DORIC LODGE , No . 933 . THIS Lodge met on Tuesday , 14 th inst ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , Bro . Rushforth W . M . being supported by Bros . Caslake I . P . M ., W . A . Hine S . Colliver , of Albert Square , B ., and Mr . Arthur Webber , of Manhattan Mansions , Holloway Road , and proved unanimous in each instance . These gentlemen being present , they were duly initiated into the Order .
Bros . T . W . Smith , Vallance , Peek , and Venton were passed to the second degree . The Auditors report showed the Lodge to be in a very flourishing

condition ; they also agreed that the books and aocounts of the Lodge were well kept , and reflected great credit upon the Secretary . The installation ceremony was then proceeded with , Brother Oxley performing the ceremony , and installing Bro . C Schulz S . W . in his usual masterly way . The W . M . then appointed and invested his Officers .
The Lodge having been thus organised for the ensuing year , the installation ceremony was brought to a close by Bro . Oxley delivering the customary addresses to the Master , the Wardens , and the lay Brethren , winding up with the oration upon the nature and principles of Freemasonry . The W . M . now said it became his pleasant duty to present to Brother Jenkins I . P . M . the jewel that had been voted to him by the Lodge , and in doing so said he knew that Bro . Jenkins had carried out his duties to the best of his abilities , and he wished him long life to wear it .
Bro . Holmes was also presented with a charity jewel , subscribed for by a number of the members , in lieu of the one he had had stolen from him . This oame as a great surprise to Bro . Holmes , he having been kept quite in the dark as to the matter . Three gentlemen were proposed for initiation , viz ., Mr . Henry Edward Skinner , of Forest Gate , Mr . Charles Thomas Macker , of Raymond Road , Upton , and Mr . William Cottage , of Locksley Street , Limehouse .
All Masonic business being ended , the Lodge was closed , and the Brethren adjourned to the banqueting hall , where an excellent repast had been provided , which gave general satisfaction . The Loyal and Masonic toasts were briefly given , almost as briefly responded to , and as the hour was very late but few songs could be given , but time was found for Bro . Bland's rendering of "The Holy City " and Bro . Spencer ' s " Hezekiah Brown , " both of which met with groat applause . The Lodge meetings are now suspended until October .
