THE annual meeting and soiree was held on the 15 th inst ., at the Royal Hotel , Devonport . The popularity of this Lodge , ono of the largest in the Province , and the only one in the Province whose members invite their lady friends to their entertainments , has always caused its festivals to bo well attended . On Wednesday 160 members and their friends wero present . An elegant banquet was served

in tho ball room , and the orchestra was occupied by an excellent band , under the direction of Bro . Riddle . Bro . A . Maddock , tho W . M ., presided . The county borough members , Sir J . H . Pnleston and Capt . J . E . Price , R . N ., were present , besides a very large muster of tho members and visitors of the Lodge , with their lady friends .

Bros . Herbert , R . Penberthy , and Hooking sang songs , nnd subsequently with Bro . Orchard and others improvised a concert in tho tea room while tho younger spirits enjoyed a dance iu tho ballroom . The festiral was by all pronounced even more successful than the many whioh had preceded it .

Applcton , on behalf of tho brethren of the Lodge , presented a Past

Master ' s handsome gold jewel , together with a beautifully illuminated aud framed address , to him in recognition of the valuable services rendered by him to tho Lodge during the year . The jewel was of a handsome aud costly character , and the address , tho work

of Bro . T . Sharp and Mr . E . E . White , was a truly artis ic production . Tho decorations included a fac dmile of the jewel at top , whilst at tho bifctom was an open book , on tho pistes of which were inscribed the names of tho subscribers . The address , which WM signed by the Officers of the Lodge , was as follows : —

There was a largo attendance , several brethren from tho Franklin Lodge being present . Before Hro . Lucas , the retiring W . M ., vacated hia position , Bro . W . Applcton , on behalf of tho brethren of the Lodge , presented a Past

Master ' s handsome gold jewel , together with a beautifully illuminated aud framed address , to him in recognition of the valuable services rendered by him to tho Lodge during the year . The jewel was of a handsome aud costly character , and the address , tho work

of Bro . T . Sharp and Mr . E . E . White , was a truly artis ic production . Tho decorations included a fac dmile of the jewel at top , whilst at tho bifctom was an open book , on tho pistes of which were inscribed the names of tho subscribers . The address , which WM signed by the Officers of the Lodge , was as follows : —

Appleton , in making the presentation , said : —Worshipfnl Master nnd Brethren , —I have a very pleasing duty to perfotm , which is none other than that of presenting to you , Worshipful Sir , a Past Master ' s jewel , in fraternal recognition of your valuable services to Freemasonry , and to this Lodge in particular .

Accompanying thin j « wel is an adrlres * , signed by your Officers containing a subscribers' record which tho Worshipful Secretary will perhaps kindly read . I may tell you that this jewel has been subscribed for by the brethren of the Lodge with the greatest possible unanimity nnd goodw 1 ! . I have bad many pleasant things

to do in my lifetime , and I havo spent many happy moments in this Lodge , but believe me , Worshipf . l Sir , when I tell you thafc nothing has ever fallen to my lot which has given me greater pleasure than presenting you with this Past Masters jewel on behalf of the brethren , and , in doing so , I wish you a long life , health and every
