TN the preface to the said " Scarlet Book , " the author says :

A . "Freemasonry being a benevolent institution , and entirely tmsectarian , it is hardly credible that its votaries have for centuries been objects of bitter persecution , and that large numbers of them have suffered death in defence

of their principles ; yefc such is the case , as the Roman Catholic Church has relentlessly persecuted , tortured , and burnt them at the stake for the past sis hundred years , and

this persecution is still carried on , wherever Popery has its power to do its bloody work . " I must call attention to two exaggerations in the above paragraph : First , if any one will read in the FREEMASON ' S

CHRONICLE , 19 th June , pp 387 and 394 , the speeches made by
