He was subsequently passed to the second degree by Bro . Hancock . The installation ceremony was then proceeded with . The choice of the brethren having fallen upon Bro . George Reynolds P . M . 1614 , that gentleman was

introduced to the Worshipful Master and signified his assent to the ancient charges and regulations . A Board of Installed Masters was then constituted and Bro . Reynolds was installed into the chair of King Solomon according to ancient custom , the ceremony and the subsequent addresses being cnpitally rendered by Bro . Walter Han . cook . The following Officers for the ensuing year wore then appointed

Tyler . A Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Hancock for his services during the pnst year , whioh was suitably acknowledged This concluding the business of the evening the Lodge was closed and the brethren adjourned to tho Victoria Hall , where the banquet was sorved . At the termination of the repast the usual Loyal and Masonio toasts were drank by the brethren , Brother Brownrigg

responding for the Grand Officers , Bro . George Reynolds acknowlodged the toast of the Sister Grand Lodges of the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada . He said that the American brethren greatly approved of the Anglo-American Lodge , and extended a cordial welcome to all its members who went over to visit them . The handsome loving cup that graced the table , the jewel he

wore , and numerous letters received all spoke for the appreciation of their brethren across the Atlantic . Every brother received a warm welcome , whioh proved that Freemasonry did much to promote good feeling among the English speaking nations . In proposing the health of the Worshipful Master , Bro . Hancock said that it was a toast that every one would drink with the utmost satisfaction , for if over a

brother came to the obair with the best wishes of the brethren it was Bro . George Reynolds . The Lodge would nob have attained its present proud position had it nob been for his devotion , zeal and hard work . Bro . Reynolds in reply said that he always had tho interest of the Lodge at heart and he was determined it should be a success . When he went to the States the Grand Lodge of

Maryland treated him light royalty , and the Anglo-American Lodgo would always endeavour to return tho compliment . He would carry out his duty to the best of his ability and would sustain tho popularity of the Lodge . Bro . Hancock acknowledged the toast of the Immediate Past Master , and thanked the brethren for their goodness to him during his year of office and liberality in presenting

him with the handsomo Lodge jewel . Ho had performed his duty to the best of hia skill and ability and had worked with lovo and harmony with every brother in Bupport of tho principles and purpose for which tbo Lodge was established , and wonld always be ready to assist when required . Bro . Woolloy one of the founders and Bro . Ked ^ e responded for tho Past Masters . The W . M . in felicitous terms

proposed the Visitors ; Bro . Baron de Bush took the opportunity of thanking the Lodge for their kindness iu giving hiui a lotter of introduction to the Grand Lodgo of New York . General Smith ' s countenance positively beamed when ho read their letter and he was received with overwhelming hospitality . Ho was taken round the magnifictent city of Chicago and introduced to the Lodges . Ho

regretted that he bad not time to give details , but would recommend every brother who had the ohance to visit the American Lodges and note their working , which sometimes commenced at 10 o'clock in tbe morning and finished at 11 o'clock at night . Bro . Frank Herald , of the Victoria Lodge , and Bro . Fermley , from New Zealand , also spoke

to the toast in complimentary terms . The Officers of the Lodge having been honoured , the Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a happy conclusion . During the evening a capital selection of music was given by Bro . Schartau , assisted by Miss Florence Bothell , Bro . It . Hopkins with his silver bells , and Master Sydney Lovett .

THE annual meetiug of this Lodge for the installation of Worshi pful Master and Officers for the ensuing year , was held at the Masonic Temple , Johannesburg , on Wednesday , the 1 st March , at five o ' clock . There was a large attendance of brethren present , including visitors from Pretoria , Heidelberg , Krugorsdrop , Boksburg , & o . At the last regular monthly meeting , tho Senior Warden

Bro . J . Waldie Peirson , was elected Worshipful Master , and the minutes of his election having been confirmed , other business arising out of the minntea was postponed , so that the Lodge should proceed with the installation ceremony . The Treasurer , Bro . J . E . Green , first , however pr 83 ented a verbal report as to the finances

of the Lodge . The books closing on the previous day , there had not been sufficient time for tho preparation and audit of the regular annnnl statement of accounts . The year began with a credit balance of £ 134 Is Od . Subscriptions , foes , & c , totalled during the year £ 489 12 s 9 d , and the expenditure amounted to £ 291 13 s Od , leaving a bulauuo iu hand ou 28 th February of £ 303 7 u Od , including

£ 12 Is 9 d to credit of Benevolent Fund . Notwithstanding the fact that the outstanding subscriptions were of a larger amount than he could have wished ( £ 122 19 s Od ) the financial position of the Lodge he regarded as satisfactory . The Worshipful Master , Bro . T . Sheffield , in briefly addressing the brethren on the work of his year of office , mentioned that 11 regular

monthly and 20 emergency meetings had been held in all , the roll of membership of the Lodge having been added to by 12 initiations . He expvesaed his thankfulness to the Wardens , who had been so regular in their attendance , and had scarcely missed a single meeting during the whole year , and complimented them upon the efficient mauner in whioh bhey had discharged their duties . To tho other

Officers who had been able to attend with regularity he also expressed his thanks . To his Immediate Past Master , Bro . J . E . Green , he was indebted not only for assistance in the work of the Lodge , but for advice , and the brotherly aid of his constant presence , no less than for the assiduous manner in which he had disoharged the duties of Treasurer . To other Fast Masters of the Lodge and visiting Past

Masters he expressed his indebtedness , and in conclusion complimented the Lodge upon having as his successor one who , he was sure , wonld discharge the duties of Master zealously , faithfully , and impartially . The ceremony of installation was then proceeded with according to ancient oustom , the Worshipful Master being the Installing Officer .

Bro . A . Dawes presided at the organ , and the odes and hymns sung added immensely to the brightness of the ceremony . Bro . Peirson having been duly installed and invested was saluted according to the ancient rite , the three proclamations being made by the Installing Master . The working tools of the three degrees and the warrant of the Lodge having been entrusted to the keeping of the

newlyinstalled W . M . by the retiring W . M ., he proceeded to invest his Officers for the ensuing term , as follows : —Bros . T . Sheffield I . P . M ., W . B . Boyes S . W ., G . W . Cowen J . W ., C . A . Aburrow Dir . of Cers ., J . E . Green Treasurer , Dr . H . Hexton Chaplain , S . E . Downing Seoretary , F . H . Ansell S . D ., B . A . Hall J . D ., E . Haines I . G ., J . Cherrington and J . R . Williams Stewards , E . Hall Organist . The

address to the W . M . in the West was delivered by Bro . H . W . Goodwin ; that to the Wardens in the North by Bro . Dr . H . Hexton , and that to the brethren generally by Bro . J . E . Green . Congratulations and good wishes having been expressed by a number of those present , the Lodge was closed down , and the brethren adjourned to meet again at banquet at Height ' s Hotel later in the evening .

The banquet was given in celebration of the installation of the W . M , and Officers at Height ' s Hotel , on Wednesday , the lsb March . Covers were laid for fifty brethren . The chair was occupied by tho newly installed W . M . Bro . J . W . Peirson , who was supported on his right by the W . M . of tho Golden Thistle Lodge , Bro . A . Dawe , Bro . G . Smythe , and the W . M . of the Heidelberg Lodge , Bro . W . H ,

Webster . On bis left he was supported by the retiring W . M . Brc T . Sheffield , by the W . M . of the Star of the Rand Lodge , Bro . H . B . Papenfus , and Bro . Dr . H . Exton and W . Royce Past Masters . The vice-chairs were occupied by the Senior and Junior Wardens . The spread was an excellent one , the manager of Height ' s Hotel , Bro . Raphaely , having evidently laid himself out to do special justice to the occasion .

The toasts included the Queen and Craft , the English National Anthem being sung in lasty fashion ; tho President , to the accompaniment of the inspiring "Volkslid , " doue into English ; H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ; Johannesburg Lodge and its newly elected W . M ., which was given by W . M . Bro . H . B . Papenfus , aud rot ponded to by Bro . Peirson W . M . ; Sister Lodges and

Constitutions , proposed by Bro . W . Uoyee , and responded to by the Masters of the local Lodges working tinder the Scottish and Netherlands ' Constitutions ; the Officers of tho Lodge , by Bro . A . Dawe , and responded to by the Senior Warden , Bro . W . B . Boyes , the Junior Warden , Bro . G . W . Cowen , and the Director of Ceremonies , Bro . B . Aburrow ; the I . P . M . and retiring Officers , by Bro . J . E . Green ,

responded to by Bro . T . Sheffield ; Visiting Brethren , by Bro . Dr . H . EXIOD , responded to by Bro . Purchase ( Natal ) , and by Bro . W . H . Sheffield , with a Past Master ' s jewel , in recognition of the manner in which he had performed the duties of MaBter during his term of office just oloBed .

The Directors of Spiers and Pond , Limited , notify that the transfer books will be closed from the 19 th inst . to the 30 th inst ,, both inclusive , for the purpose of preparing the Interest Warrants , ou the 5 per cent .
