Tbe Qneen received at Windsor Castle on Thursday afternoon Mr . Bayard , the United States Ambassador , who was introduced by the Earl of Rosebery , and presented his credentials . Mrs . Bayard was introduced to her Majesty by the Conntess of Antrim . The

Hon . Edmuffd Monson kissed hands on his appointment as Ambassador to Vienna . DK . NANSEN ' S EXPEDITION . —It was necessary that all tbe provisions taken for this expedition should keep good for at least

seven yearp , and be of the very highest quality of their kind . We understand that Messrs . Cadbury , of Bourn ville , have supplied about 1 , 500 lbs . weight of their Cocoa Essence and Chocolate in hermetically sealed tins .

The Bishop of Nottingham ( Dr . Trollope ) on Wednesday opened a new church at Pointon , in the Pen district of Lincolnshire , which has been erected to meet the requirements of a scattered population . The Crown , who are landowners in the locality , and also the

local landowners , have contributed towards the cost of the undertaking . Bournemouth Town Council on Wednesday proclaimed a pnblio holiday for the royal wedding day , and a local committee was

appointed to carry out the celebrations . It was decided to give a tea to about 6 , 000 elementary school children , and to present all the aged poor in the borongh with a sum of money .

Interest in the 20-rating class , whioh has always been a popular one with yachtsmen , will be increased by the addition of Lord Dudley's new boat , which will be completed very shortly . At present there is no doubt that Mr . Hill's new Dragon is tbe best boat

in this class , and as it is a class whioh be bas done more to promote than any other man , no one will grudge him his success . Lord Donraven ' e Deirdre is undergoing alterations with the view of improviag her speed .

At the Masonic ceremony at Halifax , on Saturday , the 17 th inst ., a rather onrious incident occurred . The details for laying the corner-stone had been adjusted , Lord Mount Edgcumbe had taken his place ready

to perform the ceremony , accompanied by the Grand Chaplain and the worthy dignitaries of the Grand Lodge , when the Tyler was noticed to be looking round rather anxiously for the trowel , prooured , of course , especially for the occasion . Iu vaiu he made inquiries of the local brethren for the silver implement , and for some time the worthy ' s features were

dec . 'dedly more expressive than " mystic " even to the " uninitiated . " At length Lord Mount Edgcumbe good-humouredly suggested a mason ' s trowel , and one was procured which

had evidently done menial duty for a considerable time : and the ceremony was proceeded with . The Mayor of Halifax ( Alderman Davies ) was not present at Saturday ' s proceedings . He took the advice of his friends and returned to Grussington on

Friday evening , leading his share of the day ' s work to Aid . Jamts Booth , the Deputy-Mayor . Practically , Saturday was observed as a holi . day , except so far as tbe shopkeepers were concerned . The latter closed their premises from two p . m . till five ; and though it was

marktt day , business was at a standstill during the afternoon . Iu the evening , however , a brisk business was done on account of

Mrs . Channer . THE DUNMOW FITTCH . —ABraintreecorre . spondent of the Daily Telegraph states that the Dnnmow Flitch Committee havo selected

thrte married conples , residing at Birmingham , Wednesbury , and Molesey , Surrey , respectively , to be tried according to ancient custom for the prize of the Dunmow Flitch . All three couples are young .

The Irish Warehouse , Regent Street , have received an extensive order in connection with the trousseau of Princess May , including some fine Irish cambrio handkerchiefs , with half-inch hems , beautifully embroidered with coronet and monogram of the Princess ' s own

special design ; also handspun handkerchiefs , with line woven lines on the border , and trimmed with real laoe ; and some Irish clear lawn handkerchiefs , embroidered with butterflies .

Throughout the fruit-growing districts of Kent the almost unparalleled spell of dry weather has been severel y felt . This is particularly noticeable with the soft fruit . Pastarage there is none . Iu the distriot of Hollingbourne , whioh is situated on the range

of hills between Sittingbourne and Maid , stone , the villagers are in Bore strait !) for water . All the ponds are dried up , and drink , ing water has to be carted from the valley , a mile and a half distant , and is retailed at so much per barrel . In the same distriot the

grass crop has been so scorohed up that the grass will not be cut , and sheep have been turned out into the pasture land for keep . The Prince of WaleB having promised to

open the National Workmen ' s Exhibition in the Agricultural Hall on Saturday , 1 st July , local tradesmen and others are making an effort to provide suitable decoration of the street from the Angel to tbe entrance of the Hall in Upper Street . Voluntary

contributions for this purpose from individuals , already amounting to £ 100 , have been supplemented by a grant on the part of the Islington Vestry , who , at a special meeting held on Thursday at the Vestry Hall , voted £ 75 . Sir Albert Rollitt , Bpeaking as the

chairman of tbe London Chamber of Com . merce , warmly supported the proposed grant . Mr . Garrity stated that the exhibition would be unique in its way—nothing of the kind , it would be found , had been seen in this country

before . One of its objects WUB to encourage a taste for gcod , honest work instead of shoddy and scamped productions . The City Guilds and Corporation had manifested they interest in the approaching exhibition b y giving £ 1 , 500 in prizes .

At the Masonic ceremony at Halifax , on Saturday , the 17 th inst ., a rather onrious incident occurred . The details for laying the corner-stone had been adjusted , Lord Mount Edgcumbe had taken his place ready

to perform the ceremony , accompanied by the Grand Chaplain and the worthy dignitaries of the Grand Lodge , when the Tyler was noticed to be looking round rather anxiously for the trowel , prooured , of course , especially for the occasion . Iu vaiu he made inquiries of the local brethren for the silver implement , and for some time the worthy ' s features were

dec . 'dedly more expressive than " mystic " even to the " uninitiated . " At length Lord Mount Edgcumbe good-humouredly suggested a mason ' s trowel , and one was procured which

had evidently done menial duty for a considerable time : and the ceremony was proceeded with . The Mayor of Halifax ( Alderman Davies ) was not present at Saturday ' s proceedings . He took the advice of his friends and returned to Grussington on

Friday evening , leading his share of the day ' s work to Aid . Jamts Booth , the Deputy-Mayor . Practically , Saturday was observed as a holi . day , except so far as tbe shopkeepers were concerned . The latter closed their premises from two p . m . till five ; and though it was

The Irish Warehouse , Regent Street , have received an extensive order in connection with the trousseau of Princess May , including some fine Irish cambrio handkerchiefs , with half-inch hems , beautifully embroidered with coronet and monogram of the Princess ' s own

special design ; also handspun handkerchiefs , with line woven lines on the border , and trimmed with real laoe ; and some Irish clear lawn handkerchiefs , embroidered with butterflies .

open the National Workmen ' s Exhibition in the Agricultural Hall on Saturday , 1 st July , local tradesmen and others are making an effort to provide suitable decoration of the street from the Angel to tbe entrance of the Hall in Upper Street . Voluntary

contributions for this purpose from individuals , already amounting to £ 100 , have been supplemented by a grant on the part of the Islington Vestry , who , at a special meeting held on Thursday at the Vestry Hall , voted £ 75 . Sir Albert Rollitt , Bpeaking as the

chairman of tbe London Chamber of Com . merce , warmly supported the proposed grant . Mr . Garrity stated that the exhibition would be unique in its way—nothing of the kind , it would be found , had been seen in this country

before . One of its objects WUB to encourage a taste for gcod , honest work instead of shoddy and scamped productions . The City Guilds and Corporation had manifested they interest in the approaching exhibition b y giving £ 1 , 500 in prizes .
