Outside of opening and oloaing a Lodga on the ocoasion of a fnneral , American Masonry has no Sunday work .

Instruction.

The Dorothy Vernon Lodgo , No . 2129 , are contemplating a very pleasant ohange in the date and place of their installation ceremony . They propose , with the permission of the Duke of Rutland , to hold thoir aunual gathering in the summer at the birthplace of the Lodge , Haddon Hall . Snoh a decision wonld be highly popular in Masonio oircles , aud wonld ensure a large and influential attendance .

At a recent meeting of the Bedford Town Council , the Mayor announced that Mr . F . VV . Webb had forwarded thesnm of £ 2 2 s for tho use of the Old Grammar School Hall on

the occasion of the installation of Lord Ampthill as Provincial Grand Master , together with an expression of thanka on the part of those conoerned for the facilities that had been afforded .

It having been stated in gome quarters tha t Alderman KnilL-had bdau proojded in the mayoralty iu recent years , by a Roman Catholic , in the person of Sir Polydore de Keyser , it has been pointed out that Sir Polydore , though by birth a Catholic , had , by joining the Freemasons , ceased to be regarded as a faithful son of the Chnrch , the Vatican having at all times forbidden its followers to belong to any secret sooiety . —Londoner .

The members of the Semper Fidelia Lodge , No . 1254 , had a sad but nnnsnal experience on Saturday , the 8 th inst ., many of thim witnessing within a couple of hours two of their most respected Past Masters following to tho grave the remains of those who were dear to them . The brethren in qnestion were Bro . A . J . Trnscott and Bro . F . R . Hearn . A considerable number of

members of the Lo . lge joiued them in their sorrowfyl task , and so indicated their sy ^ patny . Bro . TToarn has lost his wife , who hits been an invalitl for many years , but whose end cime at last somewhat suddenly . Bro . TriHcotb l . is ' , after a few weeks' illness , a daughter of great promise . Both are wellknown ci . izeup , and many besides their brother Masons sympathise with them .

A clergyman , whose easy and not very respeotfnl manner of speech has gained for him no small meusnra of popularity , in a leotnre ou Burns last week to a Glasgow audience , referred to onr national bard as a backslider who had " tried to find relief in the merry-making of a Masonic Lodge , " and again " to his Masonio developed tendency to

a ' spree . '" I did not hear the rev . gentleman lecturing , but these are words he is reported to have used . Taking the •entences together , there can be no doubt of what the speaker intended to imply by the work " merry-making , " aud thereby proves that he was making free with a enbject he evidently kuows nothing aboat . His csttmai o of Freemasonry compares very unfavourabl y with that of another clergyman in the same distriot , who , speaking of Freemasonry the

other evening , said , " we are bonnd to do what we can to raise and elevate our brethren in every possible way , and try and make them lead holy and happy lives . " That is his estimate of Freemasonry , nnd he spoko as one of the brotherhood . A Masonic Lodge

can be no retngo to the backslider in the sense indicated by the first speaker , bnt rather , if he shonld be admitted within our portals , tbe result iB exactly the opposite . Freemasonry , says a Masonic author , founds upon the principle that religion is essential to

the well-being of man ; it requires every brother to be faithful to his reli gious convictions ; and it will have nothing to do with a man of no religion . Every candidate is required to profess hia belief in two great doctrines—the existence of God and of a future state . —The Mallet .

When a brother is suspended for nonpayment of daea , application for restoration to good Masonic standing must take place daring life ; application after death and before bnrial cannot plaos him in good standing nor entitlo him to Masonio bnrial .

Instruction.

Our advices from the Cape record the death of Bro . Jan Heudrik Hofmeyr , Master of the Supreme Court . For a long time Bro , Hofmoyr's health had not be 9 ti robust , and those who were intimate with him knew that he had never recovered from the shook of grief whioh he sustained when the Goado Hoop Temple was burned . Bro . Hofmeyr , who was 59 years of age , was unmarried .

He was one of the ablest and moat trusted membors of the Civil Service , whioh he entered as a clerk in the Surveyor General's department in 1849 . Subsequently he be . came olerk to the Resident Magistrate of Simon ' s Town , 1852 ; olerk Deputy

Surveyor-Generals Department , Eastern Districts , 1853 ; chief olerk , Orphan Chamber Branoh , Master ' s Office , Cape Town , 1864 . Ho was appointed Master of the Supreme Court , in 1876 , and held the office with singular ability to the time of hia death . But , if it is

possible , Bro . Hofm ° yr was better known as a Freemason than as the Master of tha Supreme Conrt . As the Deputy Grand Master nnder the Netherlands Constitution for tho whole of South Africa , in suocession to Sir Christoffel Brand , Bro . Hofmeyr was tho best known and most highly respeoted membtr of the Craft so far as the Dutch

brethren are concerned , whilst the respect and affection were fully shared by Freemasons of every degree and country in the land . Initiated into the Lorl 70 de Gocdj Hoop in July 1866 , he made rapid progress , being crafted on the 1 st of August of the same year , and raised to the degree of M . M . on the 9 th August . In 1867 he was elected J . W ., and filled the Senior Warden ' s ohair in 1868 .

69 , making room , however , for Brother Ryk de Sneur in the Master ' s chair in 1870 . Iu the following year , however , Bro . Hofmeyr was unanimously eleoted W . M . and filled the chair with tbe utmost satisfaction to the brethren until June 1874 Till the last Bro . Hofmeyr was a constant attendant on the duties of his Lodge .

A new York contemporary has noticed in Masonic papers reoently a disoussion ou "How should a Mason wear his apron ?" The writers havt spoken of the flap and the corner , the first , second , and third degrees , but have forgotten the one word , more important than any other , and that one word covers the whole dnty of a man and a Mason . He should wear his apron worthily . —Mallet .
