hv the W . M ., Bro . W . Bowers S . W . presenting and explaining the Working Tools , and Bro . G . G . Mends J . W . rendering the Antieut Charge . This over , Brother James Smith , who had expressed his desire to become a F . C ., was Questioned as to proficiency , and ultimately passed to the second degree by (• ne W . M ., being assisted by the S . W ., who presented the Working Tools . At the festive board which followed , Loyal and Masonic toasts were submitted , that of the Initiate being proposed by Bro . John Bowers P . M .,

and duly responded to by Bro . Appledore . Bro . Myers P . M . proposed that of the newly-passed Brother , saying that he had known him for some time , and felt assured that he woulcl be a credit to the Lodge . Bro . Smith , in response , said that his wish was to attain the standard suggested by Bro . Myers , and he would accordingly try to become a good and true Mason .

Bro . Lloyd P . M ., in a very admirable speech , gave a hearty welcome to the visitor , his exordium being devoted to the beauties of Freemasonry , and the benefits derived from seeing the svovk of other Lodges , and concluding with the expression of a hope that Bro . Poole might again pay them an early

visit . Bro . Poole replied in a somewhat lengthy and humorous address , saying that this was the first Lodge which he had visited , and so far as he could judge , tho work of all the Officers had been performed in a highly satisfactory and impressive manner .

The proceedings were enlivened by songs , recitations , & c , by Bros Walter Bowers , George A . Myers , John Bowers , Edward Roberts , and J . F Mends .

ZION LODGE , No . 1798 . THE regular meeting was held at the Grand Hotel , Manchester , on Wednesday , the 12 th inst ., Bro . Walter Fowden W . M . The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , Bro . Harry Frankenstein was passed to the degree of F . C . by Bro . S . Mamelok P . M . Treasurer , and in the absence of the regular Officer Bro . George Rideal P . M . undertook to act as Deacon .

Bro . Max Frankenburg Sec . having been congratulated upon his return to England after a protracted visit to America , the acting Secretary ( Bro . Geo . Crocker ) announced that a letter of condolence had been forwarded to the family of the late John Fisher P . M ., which had been duly acknowledged . The Brothren then adjourned .

The Brethren sat down to an excellent banquet provided in Bro . Geo . Lander's best style , and under the direction of Bro . Willie Wright , assisted by Bros . Frank Swinford , Will Edwards , & c ., some excellent vocal and instrumental contributions towards the harmony of the evening were given .

TENNANT LODGE , No . 1992 . ON Wednesday the annual summer outing of the Lodge was held , under most auspicious circumstances . The party , numbering about 180 , left Cardiff at nine o ' clock by train for Monmouth . On arriving there , breaks were in waiting , and the party , who had been invited to the Hendre by the Provincial Grand Master Bro . Lord Llangattock , thoroughly enjoyed thoir day ' s outing . Bro . W . I . Vaughan acted as Secretary , and Bro . Arthur Roberts as Assistant Secretary .

DUKE OF YORK LODGE , No . 2449 . A REGULAR meeting was held at tho Palatine Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , the 13 th inst ., the following being present : —Brothers Fred Warburton W . M ., Wm . Boden I . P . M ., Thos . T . Hardicker S . W ., Clement J . Hall J . W ., Oates Rushton Treas ., Robt . Meggitt Sec , A . G . Bryce I . G ., J . S . Whittle D . C ., Rowland H . Whatham , Jas . Andrew P . M . P . P . S . G . D ., Arthur Sutcliffe , Wm . T . Schofield P . M . P . P . G . D ., S . Kew , Edward Roberts P . M . 1459 .

Two ceremonies ( a second and third ) were due , but were not taken , and the ordinary business of the Lodge being quickly disposed of , an early adjournment was made to the festive board , where Loyal and Masonic toasts

were proposed and honoured . The principal feature , however , was a very racy descri ption of a recent visit to Norway , given by Bro . Clement J . Hall , which -was subjected to the friendly criticisms of Bros . Boden , Hardicker , and Whatham . Songs and recitations filled up the remaining portion of the evening , these being contributed by Bros . Kew , Whatham , and Roberta .

their first very successful season on Friday of last week at the Farleigh Hotel , Amhurst Road , Hackney . The Brethren sat clown to a supper provided by Bro . D . J . Witte , in whoso house tho weekly meetings are held , Bro . Dunstan P . M . and T . I . Bird P . M ., & c , occupying the respective chairs .

The usual toasts were honoured , and several of the Brethren contributed to the harmony of the evening . Mrs . Cox , the talented daughter of the host , presided at the piano . Amongst those specially deserving of mention wero Bros . Dunstan P . M ., George Clark P . M ., Crane P . M ., Ditchman , Jackson , Jeanes , F . and G . Kobbell . Peters , and Thomas Feistel , whose excellent dramatic and humorous

recitals were much appreciated by the Brothren ; his first contribution was " The Woman of Mumbles Head , " followed by tho speech of Sergeant Buzfuz in the trial of Bardell v Pickwick , in which he appeared in character , wearing a wig which at one time adorned the head of one of our celebrated judges ; towards the close of tho evening he concluded with "The Jay , " from Jerome K . Jerome ' s " Three Men in a Boat . " Mr . Witte jun . gave a violin solo , being accompanied by his sister , Miss F . Witte .

In addition to those already mentioned as being present were Bros . R . Collett , J . Cole ( late proprietor ) , Callry , Piatt , Anley , Jarrett , Witte , Cave , Harry Willsmer Sec , and others . It has been decided to adjourn the meetings of the Lodge from 14 th June to 20 th September next .

LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 581 . A MEETING was held at the Old Boar ' s Head Hotel , Manchester , on Thursday , tho 13 th inst ., Bro . James W . Abbott Preceptor . There were also present : —Bros . G . T . Lenard Treasurer , Alfred Hebden Secretary , R . Alf . Hepworth acting W . M . Edward Entwisle S . W ., ArchibaldLongworth J . W ., H . J . Harrison S . D ., J . J . Dean J . D ., Geo . Bro . Hepworth having assumed the principal chair , he commenced proceedings at 7 . 35 . The Secretary read the minutes , which were duly confirmed , and the following Brethren were successfully balloted for as joining members : —Bro . Oswald Whittaker , Truth Lodge , No . 1458 ; Bro . W . M . Boyd , Union Lodge , No . 268 ; Bro . Dr . E . E . Jones , Faith Lodge , No . 581 .

Bro . Pettinger having consented to act as candidate , the ceremony of Raising was rehearsed by Bro . Hepworth . Bro . Lenard afterwards assumed the chair , and delivered the Traditional History ; he also presented and explained the Working Tools of the third degree .

The Lodge having been lowered , a notice of motion by Bro .. Hebden , seconded by Bro . Lenard , that the sum of £ 10 be subscribed from the funds of the Lodge to the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , was put before the Brethren and carried unanimously . The next meeting will be held on Tuesday , the 25 th inst ., when the ceremony of Initiation , and also that of Passing , will be rehearsed .

BELGRAVE CHAPTER , No . 749 . A MEETING was held on Friday , 14 th inst ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet Street , under the presidency of Comp . Fry M . E . Z ., who was supported by Comps . Straton H ., R . W . Walker J ., W . A . Scurrah S . E ., H . W . Noakes S . N ., J . Stephens P . Z ., J . J . Thomas P . Z ., E . Storr P . Z ., and several other Companions , among them being the following Visitors : McDowall P . Z ., Tuck P . G . Standard Bearer Essex , T . C . EdmondsP . Z ., and Ronaldson .

The Chapter having been opened and the minutes confirmed , the chief business of the meeting was proceeded with , Comp . W . A . Scurrah installing Comp . Straton into the principal chair , and Comp . Walker into that of H . Comp . Walker then installed Comp . Noakes into the J . chair , the whole of the work being performed in an exemplary manner .

At the conclusion of the ceremony Comp . Scurrah proposed that a hearty vote of congratulation be recorded on the minutes to Comp . Walker , for the admirable manner in which he had installed his successor , particularly as this was his first attempt . The proposal was seconded and endorsed by both members and Visitors .

The Exaltee not being present , the Chapter was closed , and the Companions adjourned to a choice banquet , served under the personal superintendence of Bro . Arthur Clcmow in the first-rate style for which his establishment is so famous . The customary Arch toasts were honoured , that by the Janitor concluding a very happy meeting .

BOSCAWEN LODGE , No . 101 . THE annual installation was held at Ghacewater , on the 17 th in 3 t ., when Bro . J . Retallack was placed in the chair . The Officers for the year were subsequently appointed .

ST . ETH ELBERT LODGE , No . 243 . AT the annual meeting , which was held in the Assembly Room at the Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , on Tuesday , 28 th ult ., the members installed Bro . Elijah Shaw , of Bryngwyn , as their Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . After business , the Brethren assembled at the Installation banquet , when the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured .

ST . ETH ELBERT LODGE , No . 243 . AT the annual meeting , which was held in the Assembly Room at the Green Dragon Hotel , Hereford , on Tuesday , 28 th ult ., the members installed Bro . Elijah Shaw , of Bryngwyn , as their Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . After business , the Brethren assembled at the Installation banquet , when the usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured .
