M ., remarking upon tho harmony which has invariably existed

among all the Officers of the Lodge , and terming it a happy privilege to havo worked with him in harness together . Tho new W . M ., whe was greeted with tremendous applause , replied that it was a most difficult task to respond to a toast liko this , as ono does not like tc speak in praiso of oneself , for that might havo tho appearance of vanity ; and thon ideas of gratitude como tumbling over each other .

leading to confusion of words . He concluded his hnmorous remarks by expressing his thanks to the brethren for the unanimity with which ho had been voted to the high position he is occupying . Bro . Bailoy then gave tho toast of tho Installing Master . Ho remembered when being initiated Bro . Barnett noting as J . D ,, and tho kindliness and care with which'tho duties of the Office wero performed had made a

lasting impression npon him . No ono conld fail to have been delighted with the feeling eloquence and perfection with which tho addresses wero delivered . Responding , Bro . Barnett expressed his senso ol gratitude , and stated that ho had to thank Bro . Constable , who taught him all ho know of tho ceremony , tho performance of which seemed to havo given so much satisfaction . Bro . Saul Solomon P . M ., replying

for tho Benevolent Fund said , there was no need for him to direct attention , as was usual , to tho existence and details of tho Fund , the AV . M ., adopting a new principle , had done that for him . For years it had been attempted to raise the Fund to £ 1 , 000 . They had now reached tho snm of £ 900 , although a great deal had been dono by way of helping tho unfortunate , not by small doles , but by considerable

sums , sometimes amounting to £ 100 . Tho next toast applied to the prosperity of tho Masonio Institutions . Bro . Binckes thanked the brethren , and expressed his pleasure and satisfaction for their hearty response to tho toast . Adverting to the long prevalence of commercial depression , ho gloried in tho fact that his good Brother Terry had nevertheless succeeded in obtaining a snm exceeding £ 12 , 000

on behalf of tho Benevolent Institution . Ho trusted that under tho anspices of Prince Leopold and Lord Skelmersdale the other two Institutions would bo equally well supported , although ho feared that the political agitation , which must of necessity shortly accrne , might possibly greatly interfere with tho success of tho two Festivals . Nevertheless , ho trusted Masonio principles would bo held aloof from

nnd raised beyond and above political agitations . Some opposition had of late been manifested as to tho Secretaries attending these meetings and urging tho claims of tho Institutions ; ho however thought differently , and whilo his health and strength wero spared ( and God knew ho was losing both ) , ho would take every opportnnity to persist in urging tho claims of those who cannotspeak for

themselves . ( Groat cheering ) . For tho Treasurer and Secretary Bro . Constable replied in his nsnal terse way , and in tho course of his observations directed attention to tho "Masonio Pupils' Assistance Fnnd , " and also to the fact that a Bazaar is about to be held in aid of that fund , at which his wife and daughter will attend at a stall . Bro . J . II . Peartreo , as tho youngest , responded for the rest of the Officers .

Tho Lodgo was then called from refreshment to labour . Among other matters it was announced that £ 30 had been granted to a poor brother , and £ 3 3 s wero voted towards the above mentioned Bazaar . Gillingham and Mayno wore examined as to tho knowledge thoy had acquired in the first two degrees of Freemasonry . It may be in the recollection of some of our readers that tho former brother received his second degree in the Earl of Carnarvon Lodge , No 16-12 . Tho questions

were answered by each candidate most satisfactorily and Bro . Wood , ward performed the ceremony of tho third degree to their advantage . Tho next business on tho agenda paper was the installation of Bro . Mesrouze , and for this ceremony Bro . P . M . Townsend officiated as Installing Master . Bro . Mesrouze was duly presented , tho obligations administered , and a board of Installed Masters opened . In duo

course tho members who had not passed tho chair wero re-admitted , and tho now W . M . sainted . Tho invesiitsro of Officers then took place , the following brethren receiving tho collars : —E . C Woodward I . P . M ., Varley S . W ., Harding J . W ., Baber P . M . Treas ., Laxton P . M . Sec , Weaver S . D-, Lonsdale P . M . W . S ., Townsend P . M . D . C Bro . Townsend , who throughout had acted most efficiently , then

delivered tho addresses , which wero listened to with rapt attention . By direction of the W . M . Bro . Townsend presented to tho retiring Master tho P . M . ' s jewel , which had been voted by tho brethren . Ho trusted Bro . Woodward might live many years to bo with them , and that among tho many jewels ho was entitled to wear , ho wonld not prize any moro highly than tho ono of which ho

had bccn , tho recipient that night . Bro . Woodward said ho would lose no timo in acknowledging the compliment that had been paid him . Ho esteemed it a great hononr that had boon paid their Lodgo by the presence of tho Provincial Grand Master and his worthy Secretary , Bro . H . C Lovander . Col . Burdett was well known to members of tho Craft not only in England , but also in Scotland ; as a Provincial

Grand Master ho was second to none . To tho members ho ( Bro . Woodward ) was deeply indebted , and ho should always valuo tho jewel they had presented him . Tho ballot was next taken for Mr . Charles Pierre Sellier , proposed by Bro . Mesronze , seconded by Bro . Laxton P . M . Tho result was unanimous , and tho candidate was admitted aud initiated into tho mysteries of Freemasonry . Bro .

Mesrouze evidencing , by the way in which he conducted the coremony , that ho had spared no pains to make himself proficient . Wo regret wo are compelled hero to refer to tho incompetency of tho S . W . ; considering that brother is a P . M ., and has bub just left tho chair of a Lodge , it seemed to ns incomprehensible ho should exhibit so little knowledge of tho duties required of him . Noticeable , features

of the evening ' s business wero tho voting by tho members tho sum of £ 10 10 s to tho R . M . B . I ., and tho presentation to tho Lodge , by the I . P . M ., of a sob of pedestals for tho candlesticks , tho latter gift being recognised by tho members recording a vote of thanks , to bo entered on tho minutes . This completing tho work of tho day , Lodgo was closed . A capital binqnct

was furnished by Bro . Philips , and the good things provided had justice dono them . On tho removal of the cloth , Bro . Mesrouze proceeded with the toasts . In speaking of her Majest y he , as a foreigner , could say tho Queen of England might bo accepted as an example for the Sovereigns of Europe . As tho Patroness of our Institutions , she had especial claims on ns as Freemasons . The toasts

of tho M . W . the G . M ., the Pro G . M ., tho D . G . M ., and tho rest of tho Grand Officers of Grand Lodgo having been fully honoured , Bro . Mesronze rose to propose tho health of tho H . W . Prov . G . M . of tho Province of Middlesex . Ho had not incorporated tho name of Col . Burdett with the last toast , though no Grand Officer Past or Present was more highly esteemed . Tho zeal displayed on behalf of

Freemasonry by the gallant Colonel was nowhere moro appreciated than by the members of the Gooch Lodge , who fully realised the hononr conferred by the Prov . Grand Master attending their meeting . Bro . Col . Burdett , on rising to reply , assured tho W . M . and brethren of the Gooch Lodge that he felt intensely gratified at tho way in which his name had been received . Ho esteemed ifc a very groat

hononr to bo associated as an Officer of Grand Lodge , which had at its head most worthy brethren . It was now sorno ten or twelve years sinco he had been appointed to preside over tho Province of Middlesex , and ho had pleasing recollections of having attended a gathering of members of this Lodge when they assembled elsewhere-In speaking of the Officers of this Province , Col . Burdett remarked

they wero ever ready to exert themselves for tho welfare of tho Order , and personally he was satisfied with tho way in which they did their duty . He wonld also touch upon matters that more nearly concerned their Lodgo . He could compliment the Installing Master on tho way ho had conducted tho ceremony ; while the way in which the Worshipful Master had performed tho ceremony of

initiation left nothing to bo desired . This was the moro commendable as Bro . Mesronze was a foreigner . Before sitting down ho would ask tho brethren to drink heartily to tho toast of their W . M . Thia compliment was acknowledged briefly , but with great fervour by Bro . Mesronze . For tho toast of tho Prov . Grand Officers , Bro . Lovander replied ; ho likewise paid a deserved compliment to tho W . M . for tho

way the business had been conducted . Bro . Townsend replied for tho P . M . ' s . Tho Initiate received duo recognition , tho Visitors wero heartily greeted , and tho remaining toasts wero expeditiously gouo through , tho exigencies of train service not allowing much timo for oratorical display . The Tyler gavo the parting toast , and tho assembly di-pcrscd .

' s jewel , which had been voted by tho brethren . Ho trusted Bro . Woodward might live many years to bo with them , and that among tho many jewels ho was entitled to wear , ho wonld not prize any moro highly than tho ono of which ho

had bccn , tho recipient that night . Bro . Woodward said ho would lose no timo in acknowledging the compliment that had been paid him . Ho esteemed it a great hononr that had boon paid their Lodgo by the presence of tho Provincial Grand Master and his worthy Secretary , Bro . H . C Lovander . Col . Burdett was well known to members of tho Craft not only in England , but also in Scotland ; as a Provincial

Grand Master ho was second to none . To tho members ho ( Bro . Woodward ) was deeply indebted , and ho should always valuo tho jewel they had presented him . Tho ballot was next taken for Mr . Charles Pierre Sellier , proposed by Bro . Mesronze , seconded by Bro . Laxton P . M . Tho result was unanimous , and tho candidate was admitted aud initiated into tho mysteries of Freemasonry . Bro .

Mesrouze evidencing , by the way in which he conducted the coremony , that ho had spared no pains to make himself proficient . Wo regret wo are compelled hero to refer to tho incompetency of tho S . W . ; considering that brother is a P . M ., and has bub just left tho chair of a Lodge , it seemed to ns incomprehensible ho should exhibit so little knowledge of tho duties required of him . Noticeable , features

of the evening ' s business wero tho voting by tho members tho sum of £ 10 10 s to tho R . M . B . I ., and tho presentation to tho Lodge , by the I . P . M ., of a sob of pedestals for tho candlesticks , tho latter gift being recognised by tho members recording a vote of thanks , to bo entered on tho minutes . This completing tho work of tho day , Lodgo was closed . A capital binqnct

was furnished by Bro . Philips , and the good things provided had justice dono them . On tho removal of the cloth , Bro . Mesrouze proceeded with the toasts . In speaking of her Majest y he , as a foreigner , could say tho Queen of England might bo accepted as an example for the Sovereigns of Europe . As tho Patroness of our Institutions , she had especial claims on ns as Freemasons . The toasts

of tho M . W . the G . M ., the Pro G . M ., tho D . G . M ., and tho rest of tho Grand Officers of Grand Lodgo having been fully honoured , Bro . Mesronze rose to propose tho health of tho H . W . Prov . G . M . of tho Province of Middlesex . Ho had not incorporated tho name of Col . Burdett with the last toast , though no Grand Officer Past or Present was more highly esteemed . Tho zeal displayed on behalf of

Freemasonry by the gallant Colonel was nowhere moro appreciated than by the members of the Gooch Lodge , who fully realised the hononr conferred by the Prov . Grand Master attending their meeting . Bro . Col . Burdett , on rising to reply , assured tho W . M . and brethren of the Gooch Lodge that he felt intensely gratified at tho way in which his name had been received . Ho esteemed ifc a very groat

hononr to bo associated as an Officer of Grand Lodge , which had at its head most worthy brethren . It was now sorno ten or twelve years sinco he had been appointed to preside over tho Province of Middlesex , and ho had pleasing recollections of having attended a gathering of members of this Lodge when they assembled elsewhere-In speaking of the Officers of this Province , Col . Burdett remarked

they wero ever ready to exert themselves for tho welfare of tho Order , and personally he was satisfied with tho way in which they did their duty . He wonld also touch upon matters that more nearly concerned their Lodgo . He could compliment the Installing Master on tho way ho had conducted tho ceremony ; while the way in which the Worshipful Master had performed tho ceremony of

initiation left nothing to bo desired . This was the moro commendable as Bro . Mesronze was a foreigner . Before sitting down ho would ask tho brethren to drink heartily to tho toast of their W . M . Thia compliment was acknowledged briefly , but with great fervour by Bro . Mesronze . For tho toast of tho Prov . Grand Officers , Bro . Lovander replied ; ho likewise paid a deserved compliment to tho W . M . for tho

way the business had been conducted . Bro . Townsend replied for tho P . M . ' s . Tho Initiate received duo recognition , tho Visitors wero heartily greeted , and tho remaining toasts wero expeditiously gouo through , tho exigencies of train service not allowing much timo for oratorical display . The Tyler gavo the parting toast , and tho assembly di-pcrscd .
