to have done so , and could assure the Master and Brethren that should any pf them ever be in South Africa they might rely on a hearty ' welcome from the Brethren there . ' •¦ > . ' Bro . J . Shaw 1658 said that while sitting in the Lodge he had not only admired the working of the W . M ., but had specially noticed the excellent assistance rendered by the Officers , especially the two Wardens .

The toast of the Past Masters and . the Officers was given and responded to , after which ' Bro . T . Edmonds PiM . gave the Tyler ' s toast , and the proceedings were brought to a happy termination . There were some excellent songs and recitations * during the evening , those who contributed being Bros . Edward Johnson , W . Reeves , J . West , G . Smith , J . Shaw 1658 , Dr . Walshe Owen , and others .

Marquess pf Ripqn Lodge , Nt * . 1489 . INSTALLATION OF BROTHER FREDERICK ARTHUR KING . rp HIS Lodge entered on its twenty-seventh year of existence on JL Friday , 5 th inst ., and installed a new Master for the' year . Consecrated in 1874 at Dalstoh , it continued forniainy years ' at that

horned but it has , after a short sojourn at' another resting place , now taken up its abode at the Holborn Restaurant , and it was in the capacious Masonic Hall' of that establishment that' the ceremonies were perfprmed . As usual , there was a grand gathering of Brethren , over whom the outgoing Worshipful Master Bro . J . ' F . Goddard presided :

The only business before the Lodge consisted of the installation of the Worshypful Master , ' and the appointment and investment of the Officers for the year . Bro . Campbell P . M ) presented Bro ^ Frederick Arthur King S . W . who , at the last regular meeting of the Lodge , was elected as Worshi pful Master for the ensuing year , and the outgoing Master regularly installed him . ' " " •' '

In investing Bro . Walford P . M . as Treasurer of the Lodge , an office which he has held from the Lodge's foundation , the Worshipful Master said it gave him very great pleasure to perform that duty , as that Brother had always been unanimously re-elected to the

Office he had held so long . He had most faithfully discharged the duties of the appointment and he hoped that many years might be spared to him to continue in the Office which he had honoured . The Auditors' report , which was very favourable , was received and adopted .

The Worshipful Master presented to Bro . J . F . Goddard a handsome jewel of a Past Master , which , he said , Bro . Goddard had nobly won . Bro . Goddard ' s working , not only of the installation , but of all the other ceremonies during the year , had been admirable . The ' Brethern had seen that evening how well he had done the work of the day , and they would be able to confirm the opinion which he had expressed .

The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren adjourned to a banquet , afterwards honouring the customary toasts , which were interspersed with music .

Mendelssohn Lodge , No . 2661 . INSTALLATION OF BROTHER ARTHUR WALLINGTON J ONES . T HIS , one of the many successful London musical Lodges , held its installation meeting on Saturday , 6 th inst ., at the Holborn Restaurant , where the Lodge was consecrated three years ago . Bro . William J . Hellyar jun . W . M . presided , and was supported by a very strong company of Officers and other members of the Lodge , besides several visitors .

After the opening preliminaries , the W . M . raised Bro . A- R . Ebling to the third degree . The Lodge having been resumed to the second degree , Bro . C . J . Wilkinson-Pimbury P . M . D . C . presented Bro . Arthur Wallington Jones S . W-, for installation in the Master's chair . Bro . Jones conformed to the usual requisitions , undertook the obligations of a ruler in the Craft , and was then regularly installed as Master of the Lodge .

The ceremony of installation was perfectly rendered by Bro . Hellyar , and the new Worshipful Master performed the whole or his investitures in complete compliance with ritual . A handsome jewel of the rank of a Past Master was presented in the name of the Lodge by Bro . A- W . Jones to Bro . Hellyar

, Bro . Jones accompanying the presentation with the observation that if ever a Past Master deserved such a recognition of the performance of his duties while in charge of a Lodge it was the late W . M . of the Mendelssohn Lodge . After an acknowledgment from Bro . Heijyar , the Auditors' report was adopted .

A banquet followed the working of the Lodge , and according to custom in this Lodge the musical entertainment was superb In the course of the toasts , Bro . Hellyar I . P . M . proposed the W . M ., who , he said , was an old member of the musical club , and , as such , was well knpwn to the members of the Lodge , of which he was a Founder . In his interest in the Lodge he was thorough-going , and he would do his best to carry out its traditions .

Bro . Jones W . M . in replying , said he had all his troubles to come , but if at the end of the year , in which he should place his best abilities at the disposal of the Lodge , the Brethren endorsed the flattering remarks of Bro . Hellyar , he should consider he had done well .

Bobbitt , A . Stiles , S . Crane , C . Brady , R . Ellis , L . Wearing , Dr . F . J . Allan , S . Fairchild , H . Body , J . W . Whipp , J . Wlvipp , j . Folland , E . Ward , H . Herriott , H . Alexander , & c . The Visitors were Bros . A . Darch P . M . 19 S 6 , H . •A . Darch 1986 , H . W . Page 1679 , J . Shuttle 1329 , W . Tipton 1679 , J . Roberts Org . 1679 , Wm . Lightfoot 2432 , P . Gayer I . G . 16 79 , £ ,. T . Ginder P . M . 1563 , W . J . Street P . M . 1679 , Jacques Greebe 1426 , W . Chilcott 1624 , J . Wynman , & c .

The Lodge having been duly formed , and opened with solemn prayer , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . There were three candidates for passing , Bros . H . S- Schultess Young , L . G . Wearing , and C . E . Brady , the former of whom was unavoidably prevented from attending . The other two Brethren answered the questions , were entrusted and retired ; the Lodge was opened in the second degree , and they were duly passed Fellow Crafts .

Lodge was resumed to the first degree , and the ballot taken for Mr . J . I . Roberts , proving unanimous in his favour . He was afterwards initiated into the mysteries of the Craft , the W . M . giving the Charge after the ceremony . The W . M . rose and said the members were no doubt aware

of the death of their highly and much esteemed Brother Raymond P . M ., who had held the Office of Treasurer of the Lodge since its consecration . In the name of the members he had caused a wreath to be sent for the funeral of their late Brother , feeling convinced it would be their desire to thus show respect to his memory . As

the Lodge could not do without a Treasurer he directed a ballot to be taken , to decide who should succeed Bro . Raymond , the result being an unanimous vote on behalf pf Bro . W . Hill Watson I . P . M . Bro . Watson acknowledged the election in well chosen terms , and promised to further express his thanks later on .

The W . M . informed the Brethren he proposed to represent the Hygeia Lodge as a Steward on behalf of the Charities , and trusted to receive the support of the members ; upon which the newly elected Treasurer expressed the pleasure he felt in hearing the Lodge would be so ably represented .

Five gentlemen were proposed for initiation , and a notice of motion was submitted by Bro . W . H . Watson P . M . Treas ., that a General Committee of the Lodge be formed , to be called the General Purposes Committee , and to consist of the W . M ., Past Masters , and Officers of the Lodge for the time being , whose duty it should be to enquire into the eligibility of proposed members , and such

other matters as . might from time to time be relegated to them . The Lodge was then closed , and the Brethren repaired to the Caledonian Hall , where one of those excellent dinners was provided which we are so accustomed to expect at this welli known establishment . After the repast the W . M . gave the Loyal toasts , after which Bro . Watson I . P . M . proposed that of the Worshipful Master .

He said that at the last meeting he had predicted that they would find they had an excellent ruler in Bro . Strutt , and the work which had been so ably performed that evening had proved him to be a good prophet . The Brethren might travel hundreds of miles before finding a more perfect Worshipful Master than the Brother who at present presided over the Hygeia Lodge , and feeling this he might

again say how glad he was to find that his prophesy had come true . The toast was most heartily received , as was the W . M . on rising to reply . He thanked the I . P . M . for his kind remarks , and the Brethren for the very hearty manner in which they had received the toast . He was pleased to know he had given satisfaction , and was delighted with the excellent assistance he had received from

the Officers , one and all of whom had done their duty to perfection . The W . M . next gave the toast of the Initiate , saying how proud he was to feel he had admitted a gentleman who would prove an ornament to the Lodge . He trusted the members would take the opportunity of according their latest member a most hearty welcome . Bro . J . I . Roberts—better known by his professional name of

Karl Kaps , the popular composer and musical director—tendered sincere thanks for his reception . It had long been the height of his ambition to associate himself with the Masonic Brotherhood , and now that he had been admitted a member he could but think of the very impressive ceremony through which he had passed , and which had afforded him so much pleasure .

The W . M . submitted the toast of the I . P . M . Bro . Watson , the newly elected Treasurer , the Past Masters and the Secretary of the Lodge . He was proud of being , able to refer to the Brethren included in this toast as a band of hard working members . It was unnecessary to say more in reference to their qualifications , as they were well known to the members .

Bro . Watson acknowledged the toast . He felt a considerable amount of pleasure in being able to congratulate the W . M . on his excellent working that evening . In regard to his new position as Treasurer of the Lodge , he could only say he fully recognised its responsibilities , and promised to take care that any funds entrusted

to his keeping should not be wasted . He thanked the members for the confidence they had reposed in him by unanimously electing him as their Treasurer . Bros . Tidman and Boyce also responded . The W . M . gave the toast of the visitors , and accorded them a most hearty welcome in the name of the Lodge . The toast was acknowledged by several of the guests .

During the evening some excellent music was contributed by different Brethren , among them being Bros . J . W hipp , J . Kirk , J . I . Roberts ( the initiate ) , Percy Gayer I . G . 1679 , Jones S . W ., Young , Mr . Ernest Pike , Bro . Jacques Greebe ( Gaiety Theatre ) , and others .
