The formalities having been observed , the ballot was taken for two gentlemen , candidates for initiation , who were regularly elected . One of them , Mr . H . J . Watson , was unfortunately prevented by indisposition from attending ; but the . other , Mr . Horace James Dennett , was present , and was regularly admitted to the privileges of the Craft .

Bros . H . J . Mallett , John S . Witham , and P . Capsall—who were initiated at the previous meeting—were examined and entrusted for the second degree , to which they were afterwards passed by the . Worshipful Master , who carried out his duties in a most praiseworthy manner .

The Lodge was resumed to the first degree , when it was unanimously decided that a Ladies banquet , concert and ball , should be held on the third Monday in November , further particulars in regard to which will be announced in our pages later on . Several letters ! were read , including one from a Brother tendering

his resignation , and another from Brother F . C . Dearling , who was on the agenda for raising , but was prevented from attending by important business ; after which the Lodge was closed , and the Brethren retired to partake of an excellent repast , which was followed by the proposition of the usual toasts .

The health of the Master was given by Bro . English P . M ., who said it was a pleasure to propose the toast , as the W . M . had worked his way to the highest rung of the ladder , and had performed his work so ably that day as to reflect credit on himself , his tutors , and the Lodge generally . The toast was heartily received .

The W . M . tendered his thanks . He always looked forward with pleasurable anticipation to any work he might have to perform , and was delighted to hear his efforts had given satisfaction . He strongly recommended the younger members of . the Lodge to attend Instruction meetings , where they would learn the ritual and other important parts of Freemasonry which were so essential for a full appreciation of it .

The W . M . next had very much pleasure in proposing the health of Bro . Hatton I . P . M ., who had worked that day in an able manner , and had rendered valuable assistance as Senior Warden for the time being . With the toast he also had the pleasure of coupling the name of Bro . G . English P . M . acting I . P . M .

Bro . Hatton , after thanking the Brethren for the toast , assured them that whatever he could do for the W . M ., or for the Lodge , he would most willingly undertake . The health of the Initiate was next given , and Bro . Dennett , in reply , thanked the members for the way in which they had toasted

him . It had long been his ambition to be a Freemason , and therefore he need hardly say how proud he felt at that moment to be a member of the Craft and of that Lodge . He assured his Brethren he would do his very best in every way to give satisfaction , and again thanked them for his kind reception .

The W . M . had particular pleasure m giving the toast of the Visitors , as he regarded 'it as really the chief one of the evening . He accorded the guests a most hearty welcome , and hoped to have the pleasure of seeing them again on some future occasion . Bro . Jeffries thanked the W . M . for his kind welcome . It was not the first time , and he hoped it would not be the last , on which

he had visited their Lodge . He took the opportunity of congratulating the W . M . and the Secretary on the able manner in which they - conducted the affairs of the Instruction Lodge associated with that Lodge , and ventured the opinion there could hardly be found a better instructor than Bro . Haylock , the Secretary of the Mother Lodge . He strongly advised all the members to go and see for themselves if it were not so .

Bro . Saunders 1705 said he had enjoyed the working in the Lodge immensely . He thanked their Junior Warden Bro ., Reeves for inviting him and felt sure that Brother would give satisfaction - to the Lodge when he rose to the dignity of being its Master , as he was well qualified to perform the duties of that hi gh station .

Bro . W . O . Nutt said it was the first time he had visited the Lodge ; he highly admired the way in which the work had been performed . The City of London Lodge was well known , in fact it was one of their members , now residing in Africa , who had advised him to visit the Lodge oh his trip to England . He was most delighted
