THE OLD MASONIANS . To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR , —1 was present last Saturday nighfc afc the annual dinner of the Old Masonians , and experienced a great ; amount of genuine pleasure afc meeting so many of my old schoolfellows once more , and recalling many of the scenes we had passed together

when we were boys . But , Sir , my pleasure waa considerably enhanced by fche unanimous praise accorded both in tbe speeches and in tho ordinary course of conversation to the dearly-loved Secretary of the Royal Masonio

Institution for Boys , Mr . Binckes . Ifc must have done bis heart good to have met with such a hearty reception as be did last Saturday night . As our Chairman well put ifc , "If you wish to see his monument , look around . " *

And I venture to say that nofc one boy thafc has received the benefits of the Masonio School but will carry in his heart fche grateful remembrance of fche many kind actions and words of advice whioh have emanated from we boys' best friend , —Mr . Frederick Binckes .

When I was afc school , some ten years back , bis name was always held in love and esteem ( and boys are good judges of character ) , and Mr . Binckes may rest assured thafc his name and memory will be revered by tbe hundreds of Old Masonians who are now repaying , in all parts of the globe , tbe benefits of the noblest of Masonic

Charities , benefits due in great measure to fche indefatigable zeal of its Secretary . I had occasion once before to write to you in defence of the present

excellent Head Master ( 27 th January 1883 ) , and I trnsfc that I shall not be trespassing on your valuable space by now adding my little mead of pra' -se and thankfulness for the many acts of kindness that I have received afc Mr . To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE . DEAE SIR AND BROTHER , —A German , who says that his nama is F . Schlegelmich , of Erturth ( afc present of 120 Commercial Road ) , called npon me some ten or twelve days sinop , s . ying that ha had been sent by two Brothers of onr Lodge ( Polish National , 534 ) , who

had assisted him , requesting a . loan , as he was in temporary difficulties owing to his having lost 1100 canaries , bullfinches ' , & c , owing to the negligence of Railway Official- ' he being a large importer of such

birds . He being apparently a respectable man , aud his case a hard one , I lent h m a sovereign . Two or three days afterwards he called again , aud said another consignment of birds had arrived , bufc that the railway authorities

would nofc part with them without fche freight , about ; SOs , whioh if I wonld lend him he would return in two or three days . I did so , and he left a canary and a bullfinch in my hands , promising to call the same or nexfc day . The birds are worthless to me , and I have heard nothing of him since , nor have I had a reply to a letter I wrote him

on Saturday last . I write yon these particulars in order thafc yon may caution any Brother in case he should make like application , for I am told he has applied to several members of our Lodge . He is over 6 ft . high and proportionally stout , and says he is a member of the Three Crowns Lodge , Frankfort-on-the-Maine .

BRO . GILBERT JAMES COTTRILL . ON Thursday afternoon , tbe 11 th instant , the funeral

took place of Bro . Gilbert James Cottrill , aged 61 , who for over thirty years bad been in business in Shepton Mallet , having previously been connected with the press in

London . Bro . Cottrill had always been ono of the leaders in local efforts , was one of the hospital auditors , and had held various public appointments . He was a P . M . and Past Treasurer of the Love aud Honour Lodge , No . 285 ,

P . Z . of the Royal Cyrus Chapter , P . M . of the Lodge of Mark Masons in connection therewith , and P . P . G . S . B . of Somerset . His Masonic brethren and fellow townsmen attended the funeral in large numbers . D . D . SUTHERLAND P . M . 710 .

THE funeral of this brother , who died at Totnes , on Friday , the 5 th instant , aged 45 years , took place on the 11 th inst ., at the Totnes Cemetery , and was largel y attended . The deceased was a Past Master of the Pleit . des Lodge , No . 710 ,

also a Past Provincial Grand Standard Bearer . Brethren met at the Pleiades Lodge , having obtained a dispensation to attend the funeral in Masonic clothing . The Lodge having been opened , the Rev . J . Powniug repeated the

burial service , then the brethren in procession walked to the residence of the deceased . Tbirty-fivo wreaths were p laced in and around the coffin . The service was read b y the Rev . B . Mills , vicar of Totnes , and at the conclusion

the Chaplain of deceased ' s Lodge offered a prayer . After fche interment the brethren marched in reversed order back to the residence , and thence to their Lodgo , which was then closed . The ceremony was impressively conducted b y Brother Drennan .
