Fancy Charles Wyndham in chain armour , playing a very serious role , and finally being stabbed to death 1 Yes , the contrast is indeed startling 1 Yet not altogether surprising to those who have witnessed his inimitable performance of David Garrick . The tragic intensity therein depicted causes one to imagine what the talented actor could achieve . Messrs . Louis N . Parker and Murray Carson have given us in " The Jest" an admirable specimen of romantic tragedy , and
though the dialogue smacks occasionally of modernism the story is pleasant and acceptable at the present time , when romance fills the theatrical atmosphere . Cesare and Cosmo are two Captains in the Genoese army , the latter in love with Fiorella , though he loves and rides away to the wars . During his absence Cesare , for a jest , flirts with the lady and at length marries her . When Cosmo returns Fiorella discovers that it is he whom she loves , and Cesare also perceives the mistake he has made . The cynical French proverb has it that in love there is one who salutes , and the other who
tenders the cheek . It is evident that one of the two men must be removed , and it is the chivalrous Cesare who is sacrificed to the happiness of the young couple , by the hands of a mad poet . The play naturally centres in Mr . Wyndharn , whose new departure causes the liveliest interest , and ifc must be confessed that he comes through tbe trying ordeal in an altogether admirable and surprising manner . . Mr . Kyrle Bellew , who plays Cosmo , has so long been regarded as the . hero of romance that it is only necessary to state he is here seen at his best . Miss Mary Moore , as the sweet lady who causes all

Miss Cynthia Brooke , Annuziata ; and Brother Alfred Bishop , Deodato sustained two supplementary characters with the ability that always distinguishes them . The dresses and scenery are superb , and the stage is brilliant with this story of mediaeval Italy .
Savoy . — " The Sorcerer " attained its twenty-first birthday on Thursday , and to mark so unique an event Mr . D'Oyle Carte presented each member of the audience at the Savoy Theatre on that occasion with a little book containing photographs of tho principal members of the three casts who have performed the opera in London .
Tivoli . —By permission of the Directors of this theatre , a grand matinee performance will be given there on Monday , 28 th inst ., in aid of the Music Hall Benevolent Fund . Nearly all the principal music hall artistes engaged at the present time in London have promised their assistance . THE National Cycle show opened at the Crystal Palace on Friday , and will be continued till the 26 th . The exhibition excels all previous Cycle
Shows , both in the number of exhibits and in interesting novelties ; and the resources of the Crystal Palace , vast as they are , are sorely taxed to find sufficient room for the enormous number of exhibits . Visitors may rely upon seeing all the latest inventions in regard to the important question of brakes , which is now agitating the minds of many cyclists , and all the newest things in tyres , fittings , etc . The Palace Company has arranged for many special
attractions during the show , including the Kaufmann Troupe of Bicyclists ( who are exclusively engaged , and give a marvellous exhibition of trick riding ) , and Sam Lockhart ' s . performing Elephants , " The Three Graces , " who will also made their first appearance in England . The performance of these marvellous animals is , on the continent , said to be chef d'oeuvre of this wonderful animal trainer , and their feats must be seen to be believed .
