The usual order of things was reversed in conneewith the Walthamstow Lodge , No . 2472 , a report of the consecration of which is given in this issue . It seems the Lodge is a direct outcome of the meetings of the Walthamstow Lodge of Instruction , and its

successful inauguration supplies , as Bro . Philbrick remarked , a direct illustration of the tail wagging the dog . Everything connected with the Lodge appears to have passed oft * splendidly and we only hope its future may be as brilliant as its inauguration .

It reads something like a novelty to hear that Bro . W . Shurmur advocates a small membership for this new Lodge , of which he is the first Master , in view of what has been done in the Shurmur Lodge itself .

There initiations seemed to be indulged in in regular wholesale fashion , and new members were enrolled in such profusion as to virtually create a record in the Graft for rapidity of growth in a private Lodge .

Are we to understand from this that " quantity " has proved a failure , or is this attempt at " quality " merely introduced for a change ? Whatever the reason , it certainly sounds odd for one of the most

zealous "Mason makers" of the age to talk of limiting the membership of his new Lodge to forty or fifty , or at least to attempt to do so by raising the fees .

We have no sympathy with this particular phase of monetary test for Freemasonry , and would much rather see a definite limit placed on the membership than a mere monetary consideration applied . It looks

as though the loimders de « ired to let themselves and their friends in cheaply , and make up for it from those who desired to join later on . Besides this there is the indisputable fact that monetary considerations

will not keep a Lodge , or indeed any similar organisation , select . Indeed it has often been proved that actual villainy is more ready to spend a large sum in the hope of reaping a bigger harvest , than look around for cheap favours with less scope for profitable opertion .
