THE GIRLS SCHOOL FESTIVAL .

THE one hundred and twelfth Anniversary Festival of the Eoyal Masonic Institution for Girls , the oldest of our Masonic Charitable Institutions , took place on Wednesday evening , at the Freemasons' Tavern , Great Queen Street , W . C ., and proved to be a worthy successor to the many previous

successful gatherings . Bro . F . E . W . Hedges must be congratulated upon securing such an able and efficient Board of Stewards , and to be able to announce so large a total as £ 23 , 217 , and this in spite of the many claims upon the public purse generally , and our Order in particular , during the last few months .

The Great Hall was well filled when the Chairman the Eight Hon . the Earl of Dartmouth Provincial Grand Master of Staffordshire entered , and called to order for " Grace . " Bro . Eev . Hy . Hebb , M . A ., P . G . D . having complied with this duty ,

the guests proceeded to discuss the very excellent menu provided by Messrs . Spiers and Pond , and a most animated scene was presented , the plain clothing of the Brethren iu the body of the Hall contrasting with the more gorgeous display of purple and gold on the dais .

His Lordship was supported by Bros . J . W . Brown Senior Grand Warden of Pennsylvania , Sir John B . Monckton P . G . W ., Edward Letchworth Grand Secretary , C . E . Keyser P . G . D ., Col . J . A . Bindley late Deputy G . M . Staffs ., F . B . Westlake Prov

G . W . Devon , James Terry , J . M . McLeod , J . H . Matthews , Frank Eichardson , James Stephens , H . T . Brickwell , Edward Terry , Henry Neville , Imre Kiralfy , A . J . Thomas , E . Manuel , J . B . Ashwell , Ealph Glutton , H . B . Marshall , J . Mason , Daniel Mayer , J . H . Whadcoat , & c , & c .

Some idea oi the success ol the Festival may be guaged by the fact that in addition to the large Hall , dinners were provided for guests in four other rooms , viz .: the Grown , the Glee , the Sussex , and the Drawing Boom , the Ladies and their Stewards being in the two latter .

The popularity of the Chairman was evinced by the manner in which the Brethren and Lodges of his Province rallied round him , for out of the seven hundred odd Stewards over two hundred came from Staffordshire . These Brethren aroused considerable enthusiasm when they rose to respond to their Graud Master ' s challenge , and made the roof ring with their cheers .

Grace having been sung by the vocalists , the Earl of Dartmouth rose to propose the Queen , Chief Patroness of the Institution , which we hope may be received with equal enthusiasm for many years to come . He hoped the cruel and bitter war might soon be brought to a speedy conclusion , and so close the latter years of her glorious reign in peace , happiness , and concord .

The second toast on the list was a large and comprehensive one , annually growing larger and more comprehensive . Without naming every member of the Eoyal Family he would like to voice the feeling of the Brethren and express their satisfaction that the bullet of the assassin passed by the Prince of Wales , and spared the Grand Master to them , they trusted for many years to come .

Bro . Edward Terry P . G . Treas . responded for the Officers of Grand Lodge with one of his humorous speeches , which always happily hit the point . In proposing the toast of the evening the Earl of Dartmouth said : As they were no doubt aware , that was the occasion of

the 112 th Anniversary . Therefore without much mental effort they would arrive at the conclusion that the toast had been proposed on one hundred and eleven occasions . That put him in a position of some little difficulty , and might lead one to hesitate to accept the responsibility of presiding on such an occasion .

But he was bound to own that he was not ashamed of the position he occupied , and he was not afraid of the responsibility he had undertaken , because he knew so well that however far short he might fall of the goal for which he aimed , he had something behind him which would offer a far more eloquent

testimony to the value of the Institution—and that was the Institution itself . They knew something of songs without words ; here was a case of eloquence without speech , and those who had had an opportunity of visiting the Institution , those who had realised what the Institution was doing , would agree

with him that it was a very eloquent testimony to the value of Freemasonry in this country . Last Monday he had the privilege of paying his first visit to the Institution , and he had no hesitation in saying that a sight that gave him more pleasure it was impossible to imagine . It was a pathetic sight , and he thought there was a good many of them who felt the pathos of it on that

occasion . When they remembered the great advantage the girls had by the efforts of the Craft ; when they remembered the instruction they received , the chance that was given them—a chance that they had proved over and over again they were willing to take advantage of—he thought they might congratulate themselves that they were members of that great body . If they
