ENTERTAINMENT NOTES .

Haymarket . —Mr . 3 . M . Barrie ' s charming novel" The Little Minister " has been capitally adapted for the stage , and the story is concisely told in four acts . Commencing with the meeting of Babbie and Dishart , in Caddam Woods , where the young man ' s heart goes out to his pretended enemy , the whimsical courtship is described step by step until the final discovery is made that Lord Rintoul's daughter has merely stooped to conquer . The interest naturally centres in these two , and Miss Winifred Emery has an opportunity

of proving how fine a comedienne she is , as the wayward , mischief-loving Lady Babbie . On the occasion of our visit we regretted the absence , through indisposition , of Mr . Cyril Maude , the original representative of the little Minister , as it can readily be imagined what he does with suoh a part , and it is therefore a high compliment to pay to Mr . Clarence Blakiston that this regret was minimised by his excellent rendering of the character . The quaint

humour of the Scots bodies was admirably depicted by Messrs . Brandon Thomas , Mark Kinghorne , Sydney Valentine , and Mrs . E . H . Brooke , while Mr . W . G . Elliot , as the Earl of Rintoul , and Mr . C . M . Hallard , as the baffled Captain Halliwell , are also to be commended . The scenery by Messrs . Walter Hann and Joseph Harker lends local colour to the story , and the incidental music and entr ' actes have been composed by Sir Alexander Mackenzie . A most amusing and interesting play .

Miss Nellie Parpen . —The event of the week in theatrical circles haa been the benefit , given on Thursday , at Drury Lane , to this most popular artiste of days gone by . Such enthusiasm as was evidenced on this occasion had never been known , and WJ are very pleased to hear that the result will show a balance of upwards of £ 7 , 000 .
