An Evening With My Masonic Brethren.

When the world is heaping honours upon a Brother , when wealth comes at his call , when health mantles his countenance , aud disease , misfortune and death are all far away strangers , his companions in Masonry rejoice with him , and

seem even to share in his honours , health and wealth . But change the picture as you will , and there is little or no change in the conduct of Brethren . The fickle world may hiss instead of applaud , but Masonry is ever the same . It

regards not the outer man , but the inner man of the heart . The Mystic Tic binds like no other tie . " Once a Mason

always a Mason . " Yes , even though merit decrease nnder the blighting blows of adversity , Freemasonry still extends the hand of friendship and brotherly love . When wealth departs , Freemasonry acts , not like the publican , who passes

the suppliant by on the other side , but like the good Samaritan , who pours oil into the wounds of the distressed one , cares for him until he is able to care for himself , and aids him to recover his old position , so that he in turn may aid

others . When disease supplants health , or death snatches a Brother from his family , and leaves them dependent and in distress , Masonry aids as it can the sufferer to battle with sorrow , sickness or death . An evening with my Masonic Brethren proves all this .

We reserve the happiest thought for the close—not the best in every sense , but in a certain important sense . There is no social enjoyment equal to that which prevails when labour is over is over in the Lodge , and the Brethren are assembled around the social board . It is a dinner

party , a social and convivial gathering , a joyous merrymaking , an intellectual feast and a Masonic Lodge all in one . There is nothing like it . We all know each other , for we all are Brethren . We all are ready to contribute .

each as much as we can , to the common fund of enjoyment . Nowhere is brotherly love more fully displayed than at the Masonic banquet board . We eat , drink , and are merry . We forget dull care , and engage in innocent mirth . In

turn we sing a good song , tell a good story make a good speech . The hours pass quickly by , so that an evening with our Masonic Brethren is passed before we are aware

of it . Let us value as we should the Fraternity which affords us so much profit and pleasure . There i 3 none other like it , no not one . —Keystone .

The regular weekly Convocation of the North London Chapter of Improvement was held at Northampton House , St . Paul ' s-road , N ., on Thursday . Comps . Edmonds M . E . Z ., Braated H ., Scurrab . J ., Sheffield S . E ., Jenkins S . N ., E .

Storr P . S . Notwithstanding the dense fog the meeting was fairly attended . The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed in an able and impressive manner . We recommend R . A . Masons to pay this Chapter of Improvement a visit .

The members of the Joppa Lodge held their first ball , at

Willis' Rooms , St . James ' s , on Monday , 14 th inst ., under the patronage of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress . It is only a few weeks since the project was started , and the number present was close on 300 . A dispensation had

been granted for the brethren to wear Masonic clothing , and the ball-room presented a lively and elegant appearance . The splendid band of the Honourable Artillery Company was engaged for the occasion , and dancing com

ttenced at nine o ' clock , and was kept np till a late hoar . Tbe arrangements were effectively carried ont by the Stewards , and great credit is due to Bro . H . Lazarus , Secretary , for the energetic manner iu which he discharged

his duties . During the supper ( which was most creditable to the caterers ) the toasts of the Queen and the Craft , and Success to the Joppa Ball was given . Bro . Lewis Lazarus , Secretary of the Joppa Lodge , proposed the health of the

Stewards , which compliment met with a splendid reception . Bro . Lazarus , in the course of his remarks said , that though the Lodge had been in existence since the year 1789 , this was the first time the members had had a ball , and praise was due to the Stewards for the efficient manner

m which they had worked to bring it to so successful a result . He was deputed to inform the friends present that the result achieved was far beyond their expectations , ancl at the next Lodge meeting a handsome sum would be handed over to the Benevolent Fund .
