rfflHE half-yearly meeting of the Board of Governors of the I Masonic Orphan Boys School of Ireland was held on Tuesday , 14 th inst ., at the Schoolhouse , Clonskeagh , when the report of the scrutineers of the ballot for the admission

of seven pupils was read , and it was unanimously decided that the seven candidates who obtained the highest number of votes should be admitted . Accordingly Robert H . Bolton , Louis H . Palmer , Singleton A . Harpur , W . A . Cherry , Cecil Gordon , William R . John , and Andrew Hunter were declared duly elected pupils of the School .

AT the last meeting of the East Lancashire Systematic . Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution an annuity of £ 32 was granted to an aged Brother , and annuities of £ 26 each to the widows of two deceased Brethren .

Councillor Frank Jarrett , who was on Thursday elected Mayor of Rye ( Sussex ) , commenced business on his own account at Rye in 1880 . In 18 91 he purchased the oldestablished business in High Street , carried on by the late Mr . W . Thorpe . He takes considerable interest in the

fishing industry , and is the largest smackowner out of the port of Rye . His public career commences from about ten years ago , when he contested the office of Borough Auditor , and was returned by a large majority at the head of the poll . He resigned that office three years ago to contest a seat on

the corporation . He was again returned at the head of the poll , and on 1 st November last he was re-elected without opposition . On Thursday , 9 th inst , his election as Mayor was unanimous . Bro . Jarrett is a prominent Mason , and in

May last was installed as Worshipful Master of the Wellington Lodge , No . 341 . Councillor Jarrett is a native of Rye , was educated at . Ardingly College , and served his apprenticeshi p to the grocery trade with Mr . W . F . Revill , J . P ., Wellington Place , Hastings , J ; ' and a former mayor of that town .

The Provincial Grand Master of Cheshire , in thanking the Brethren at a recent meeting for their votes in support of candidates for the Masonic Schools , said that whereas 900 votes were sufficient a few years back to carry a candidate

through , now it required 4 , 000 or 5 , 000 . We have referred to this great increase on several occasions , and regard it as a serious matter for the consideration of the Craft . We are told that the Institutions are worked more economically now than was the case in years gone by , and yet there is this

tremendous increase in votes required to secure a place . It seems to us this is the true criterion of cost , and again we ask how can the increase be accounted for ? 000 The Brethren of the Dublin Masonic Glee Club held

their 158 th dinner meeting on Friday evening , 3 rd inst ., and were honoured by the presence of a large number of guests , under the presidency of Brother Sir Charles A . Cameron . A programme of music was excellently rendered by the

musical Brethren of the Club . The usual toasts were given and responded to with enthusiasm . The next meeting of the Club is announced to take place on Friday , 1 st December , when it is hoped his Grace the Duke of Abercorn M . W . G . M . will be enabled to occupy the chair .

On the occasion of the annual festival of the Honour Lodge , No . 526 , Wolverhampton , the Worshipful Master , on behalf of the members of the Lodge , presented handsomely-designed loving cups to Bros . T . J . Barnett and Dr .

C . A . Newnham , in recognition of valuable services rendered in various ways , the latter for thirty years and the former for twenty-seven years . The gifts were suitably acknowledged

by the recipients . A collection was made on the same occasion on behalf of the Reservists Fund , amounting to /" io IOS .

The fifteen sections will be worked at the Upton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1227 , at the Great Eastern Hotel , Liverpool Street , on Monday , 27 th inst ., commencing at 7 o ' clock , by members of the Friars Lodge , under the presidency of

Bro . B . DaCosta P . M . 1349 , wno wl " " supported by Bros . D . Moss P . M . P . D . G . S . B . as I . P . M ., L . A . DaCosta P . M . S . W ., M . DaCosta P . M . J . W ., I . Davis S . D ., N . Goldman J . D ., and I . Golstone I . G . The Secretarial duties will , as usual , be carried out by Bro . Peters P . M . 1227 .

The annual dinner of the Evening Star Lodge of Instruction will be held on Saturday , 2 nd December , at 6 p . m ., at St . George ' s Hall , Carholme Road , Perry Hill , Catford . The musical arrangements have again been kindly

undertaken by Bro . C . Spencer West , and a good programme may confidently be anticipated . The success which has hitherto attended the annual gatherings will , it is anticipated , be sufficient to command hearty support . The price of tickets is 5 s each .

Sergeant W . W . Morrison , of Hull , now on service with the Army Ordnance Corps in Cyprus , has just been honoured by being elected Worshipful Master of the St . Paul Lodge , No . 2277 , for 1899-1900 , at Limassol . The enthusiasm of the

Craft in Cyprus may well be gauged by the fact that to attend Lodge meetings many members have to travel scores of miles , some entirely in the saddle . Sergeant Morrison was recentl y introduced to the Khedive of Egypt , who is now staying in the island .

Referring to the remarks made by Bro . Cheetham at the Provincial Grand Lodge of East Lancashire , with reference to Lodges failing to send in their voting papers at the proper time , and our comments thereon , a local Brother writes : As

a matter of fact , private subscribers are far more attentive in this respect , which ought not to be , as each Lodge in East Lancashire has its Charity Representative , whose duty it is to see that the votes do not go astray .

In deference to the wishes of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool and the Lady Mayoress , it has been decided to alter the date for holding the Masonic Ball from the 9 th until

Wednesday , the 17 th January . His Lorship and the Lad y Mayoress have promised to be present . This alteration of the date is to permit of the Children ' s Fancy Dress Ball taking place before their return to school from the holidays .

A petition to Grand Lodge has been forwarded in favour of establishing a Lodge at Winsford , Cheshire . The Petition is supported bv the Sincerity Lodge , Northwich . Bro . Sir

John 1 . Brunner , Bart , M . P ., Provincial Grand Senior Warden of Cheshire has consented to undertake the duties of first Worshipful Master .
